How to Prepare a Website for an Awards Judging Panel

A practical checklist for making a website clear and reviewable—and for checking award criteria, functionality, accessibility, eligibility, and submission terms before entering.

Make the public website itself easy to understand, navigate, and test, then verify that it meets the chosen award’s category criteria and submission rules. A visual refresh alone may not address content, functionality, accessibility, eligibility, or the accuracy of your entry.

Start with the award and the exact category

There is no universal judging checklist. Before changing the site or paying an entry fee, read the current eligibility rules, criteria, deadlines, required fields, and permissions for the specific program and category.

For the Webby Awards’ 2026/2027 website and mobile-site categories, the published criteria cover content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, innovation, and overall experience. Use those as prompts only if they fit the category you are entering; other awards may use different criteria. Read the Webby judging criteria.

Turn criteria into evidence on the live site

For every criterion, note where a judge can see it without needing private context or an explanation from your team:

  • Content: Identify where the site explains its purpose and gives its intended audience relevant information.
  • Structure and navigation: Check that labels are understandable, navigation is consistent, and important content is findable.
  • Visual design: Consider whether the design supports the content and includes people with disabilities in its visual and interaction choices.
  • Functionality and interactivity: Make sure key links and controls work and that the experience loads reliably.
  • Innovation and overall experience: Point to the distinctive choices or technology in the product itself, not just in your entry description.

This is a preparation aid, not a prediction of how judges will score the work.

Review the public site as a first-time visitor

Use the same public URL a judge will receive. Start with the landing page and try to understand what the site is for, who it serves, and where to go next. Follow the principal visitor journeys rather than inspecting only the most polished screen.

  1. Open the submitted URL in a normal browser session and confirm it loads without an account, private link, or explanation from your team.
  2. Look for the main purpose, primary action, and intended audience. If these are unclear, improve the live content and hierarchy rather than relying on a pitch to fill the gap.
  3. Navigate to the most important pages using the site’s own labels and links. Confirm that the structure makes the breadth and depth of the site discoverable.
  4. Exercise important forms, buttons, menus, media controls, and other interactions. Check that links lead to the intended destinations.
  5. Repeat the check on the public version after the final deployment, not only on a staging site or local build.

The Webby process describes multiple independent reviewers inspecting entries, while CSS Awards says it verifies that the public URL works and that the submission is complete. Those procedures make a self-explanatory, accessible public experience more useful than supplementary claims about features a reviewer cannot reach. Check functionality, loading, and accessibility

Test the routes and interactions that matter to the experience, including any route a judge is likely to use to understand the entry. The Webby criteria mention quick loading and live links under functionality, and disability inclusion in visual design. They are criteria to consider, not proof that any particular site has passed an accessibility audit or that every award requires one specific technical standard.

  • Check that important pages load and that internal and external links resolve as intended.
  • Try primary controls with a keyboard as well as a pointer; confirm focus is visible and controls can be operated.
  • Review headings, form labels, contrast, and text alternatives for meaningful images and media.
  • Check layouts at the viewport sizes relevant to your audience, including a narrow mobile viewport.
  • Test any interaction that depends on scripts, third-party services, or consent choices, and provide a usable path if a dependency is unavailable.

Use the target award’s own requirements to decide what formal accessibility or performance checks are necessary; the cited criteria do not prescribe a universal test suite.

Prepare an accurate, complete entry

Before submitting, compare every field with the actual public work and confirm you have authority to enter it. CSS Awards rules cite false credits, copyright complaints, unavailable content, manipulated information, and attempts to influence judges among potential reasons for rejection or removal. Read CSS Awards submission rules.

  • Use accurate project, agency, and team credits.
  • Confirm permission to submit the work and rights to the text, images, music, and other included material.
  • Ensure the submitted URL serves the work described in the entry and remains available for review.
  • Complete all requested entry information honestly; do not manipulate what judges see or attempt to contact or influence them outside the stated process.
  • Read the organizer’s terms for exhibition, promotion, and publication before submitting.

The Webby FAQ says submitting an entry grants exhibition, promotion, and publication rights. Review the current terms directly before accepting them. Webby Awards FAQ.

Confirm eligibility, dates, and what a fee covers

Eligibility and calendar details can change by cycle and category. The Webby entry guidelines, for example, say an agency-branded case-study site is ineligible to win, and that an entry fee pays for review rather than guaranteeing a score, nomination, or award. Check the current guidelines for the entry you intend to make. Webby Awards entry guidelines.

As a time-sensitive example, the Webby quick-facts page lists September 15, 2026 as the opening of its 31st Annual call and October 30, 2026 as the early-entry deadline. Verify those dates on the live page before relying on them. The same page describes nearly 13,000 entries from all 50 U.S. states and more than 70 countries for the 30th Annual awards; that is context about one cycle, not a measure of an individual entry’s odds. Webby Awards Quick Facts.

Understand the judging model without trying to game it

Programs differ in who reviews entries and how results are determined. For the Webby Awards, Associate Academy Members independently inspect and rate entries against criteria, with multiple members evaluating each entry. Shortlisted entries go to Executive Academy members with category-specific expertise, who cast ballots for honorees, nominees, and winners. That process is another reason to make the live experience complete rather than depending on a pitch to explain missing content or broken interactions. Webby judging process.

CSS Awards describes a different process: it verifies that the public URL works and the submission is complete, independent judges score entries against five criteria, and verified community voting can serve as a secondary signal when entries are closely matched. Its page says paid submission never guarantees nomination or an award. Do not assume either organization’s process applies to another program. CSS Awards judging process.

Capture a review record of the submitted site

A screenshot can help your team document what the public site looked like at submission time, but it does not replace the live URL or make inaccessible content available to judges. If you capture images for your own review, use the actual public page and note the URL and capture date alongside them.

You can capture a page yourself in a browser: open the page at the viewport you want to document, use the browser’s screenshot or print-to-PDF command, and save the result with a filename that identifies the page and date. For a consistent record, capture the same pages and viewport sizes each time and keep the original live URLs with the files.

Or skip the browser setup

For an automated capture of a public page, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. One GET request returns an image or PDF; use the API documentation to see available parameters and output options. ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.

Choosing between award programs

If more than one program could fit, compare the practical terms before entering rather than assuming that similar-sounding awards judge the same way.

What to compare Questions to answer
Criteria and eligibility Does the category fit the work, and what makes an entry ineligible?
Review access Will judges inspect the live public URL, submitted materials, or both?
Entry requirements Which fields, credits, permissions, and supporting materials are required?
Decision process Who evaluates the work, and does community voting affect results?
Fee and rights What does the fee pay for, and what exhibition or publication rights does submission grant?

The Webby and CSS Awards examples differ on several of these points, so check the organizer’s current official pages for the exact cycle and category.
