To stream a podcast video archive continuously on YouTube, organize the finished episodes into a playlist, play it through OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, and send the output to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Enable Loop Playlist if you want the episodes to repeat. Test the picture and audio, keep an independent local archive, and plan stream-session restarts: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives.
Prepare the podcast archive before you go live
Choose an editorial order
Decide whether episodes should play chronologically, by theme, or in another deliberate sequence. Check each finished video for the intended picture, audio track, and episode graphics before adding it. Keep the source files available on the computer that will run OBS.

Check rights for every episode
YouTube’s live-stream terms put the responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide. Confirm that your permissions cover livestreaming—not only the original podcast publication—for every episode and every included song, clip, image, or other third-party element. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even a license may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s livestream terms and copyright guidance.

Set up a looping archive in OBS
Install the required playback component
OBS supports local media files including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. For a playlist of episodes, use OBS’s VLC Video source; VLC must be installed for that source to appear. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the available source types and playlist option. Interfaces can vary by installed version, so check the labels in your copy of OBS.

Add and order the episode files
- Open OBS and select the scene you intend to stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. If it is missing, install VLC and restart OBS.
- In the source properties, add the local episode files to the playlist and arrange them in the order you chose.
- Turn on Loop Playlist if you want playback to return to the beginning after the last item.
- Preview transitions and listen to representative episodes. Check that the video fits the intended canvas and that dialogue and music are audible without clipping.
For a single video rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source can load a local file. Keep the files at stable paths and do not move, rename, or disconnect them while streaming.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
Confirm channel eligibility
YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility before announcing a start time. YouTube’s current live-stream setup guide explains the account setup flow.

Create an encoder stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key if prompted. You can also use the connection method offered by your installed OBS version.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel; reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Start the OBS stream and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before directing viewers to it.
For the current YouTube setup and key workflow, see YouTube stream settings.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that any particular computer or connection can sustain a chosen resolution.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Choose a resolution and bitrate that your sustained upload connection and computer can handle. If the stream health is unstable, lower the output demands and test again.
- Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes that setting.
- Use an audio format and bitrate supported by YouTube; check stereo audio at the published 128 Kbps guidance.
- Run a private or otherwise non-public test with representative motion, episode artwork, voices, and music. Look and listen in the YouTube preview rather than relying only on OBS’s local preview.
See YouTube’s encoder settings and live-stream tips. The exact optimal bitrate depends on the selected output resolution and the available upload connection; use YouTube’s current settings guidance and the health feedback for your actual stream.
Plan continuity and preserve a complete archive
YouTube can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but says a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not treat a single indefinite broadcast as a dependable way to create a complete episode archive. Keep the finished source videos separately, and consider a local recording as a second backup. An external SSD is one optional place to keep a local video archive backup; YouTube does not prescribe a specific device or capacity.

For a continuous channel, plan manageable stream sessions and restart between them rather than assuming one session will run forever or yield one complete YouTube archive. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the capture limit and recommends a local backup.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is not an option in OBS | VLC is not installed or OBS has not refreshed its available sources. | Install VLC, restart OBS, then add the source again. |
| Playlist will not advance or repeat | The VLC source list or loop setting is not configured as intended. | Reopen the source properties, confirm the files and their order, and enable Loop Playlist if required. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The channel is not eligible yet, the stream is not active, or the URL/key is incorrect. | Check channel verification and restrictions, allow time for first-time activation, and compare the OBS connection details with the current Live Control Room stream. |
| Stream health warns of instability | The computer or upload connection may not sustain the selected output, or encoder settings may not match YouTube’s recommendations. | Check the stream-health message, verify CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then lower resolution or bitrate and test again. |
| Live stream is interrupted after a rights match | A third-party element triggered YouTube’s live-content checks. | Confirm livestream rights for the matched material; contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting where appropriate, or remove/replace the material before relaunching. |
| The YouTube archive is incomplete or absent | The stream exceeded 12 hours, or the archive was not otherwise captured. | Keep independent source files and a local recording, and schedule shorter sessions with planned restarts. |
