Pre-render a calculator’s stable page content into HTML during the build, then hydrate that HTML in the browser so the calculator becomes interactive. In React Router framework mode, configure prerender in react-router.config.ts and list concrete URLs for parameterized routes. You can keep runtime server-side rendering (SSR) for other requests or serve the generated files statically. Pre-rendering changes when HTML is produced; it does not guarantee a particular speed improvement without measurements on your app.
What pre-rendering changes on a calculator page
Pre-rendering creates HTML before a visitor requests the page. React’s prerender API renders a React tree to static HTML and waits for its data to load; it is intended for static generation. If you need to start sending content before the full render finishes, React documents streaming server-rendering APIs as the alternative. See React’s prerender API documentation.

The generated HTML can include the calculator’s title, instructions, default state, and other stable content. It is visible before the client-side JavaScript has attached event handlers, so the page is not necessarily interactive immediately. Hydrate the document in the browser with React—React’s documentation uses hydrateRoot—to attach the calculator controls and behavior. The server-generated markup and the client’s first render need to agree; mismatches can cause hydration errors.
For a calculator, this makes pre-rendering a good fit for explanatory content and a sensible default view. User-entered numbers and calculations can remain client-side after hydration. Avoid baking personal or frequently changing values into a build artifact unless you have a deliberate way to regenerate it.

Choose which calculator URLs to generate
React Router framework mode supports pre-rendering through the prerender setting in react-router.config.ts. Set it to true to pre-render static paths, or provide explicit paths (including through an async function) when you need to select URLs. Route loaders run at build time for the routes being pre-rendered. The details are in the React Router Pre-Rendering guide.
Fixed routes such as /loan-calculator can be included as static paths. A parameterized route such as /calculator/:id is only a pattern; the build needs actual values, such as /calculator/mortgage, for the variants you want emitted. Gather the intended values as part of your build inputs. A route whose possible parameter values are effectively unlimited is not a practical candidate for an exhaustive static route list.
Example configuration
For example, an app with a home route and two known calculator variants could configure explicit paths like this:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →import type { Config } from "@react-router/dev/config";
export default {
prerender: [
"/",
"/calculator/mortgage",
"/calculator/savings",
],
} satisfies Config;
This illustrates the documented configuration shape; adapt it to your route structure and installed React Router version. If the variants come from a data source, an async function can produce the list at build time. Make sure required loader data is available during that build.

Decide whether the deployment still needs a server
Pre-rendering and runtime SSR solve different parts of delivery. React Router lets selected pages be generated at build time while runtime SSR remains enabled for requests that still need server behavior. Alternatively, with ssr: false, the app can be built for static hosting. React Router emphasizes that ssr: false by itself is SPA mode; it does not mean every route has been pre-rendered. See its Rendering Strategies guide.
| Choice | Who creates initial HTML? | Deployment and unlisted paths | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-render selected paths with runtime SSR | Build time for selected paths; runtime SSR remains available. | Requires a runtime server for SSR routes; unlisted paths can be handled at runtime. | Apps mixing stable pages with request-time needs. |
Pre-render selected paths with ssr: false |
Build time for selected paths. | Generated output can be served as static files. Configure an SPA fallback if other paths should load the client app; check how the host handles direct requests to those paths. | Apps whose relevant routes are known at build time and suit static delivery. |
In static SPA mode there is no runtime server for route actions or response headers; those needs require client behavior or a different architecture. The React Router SPA guide explains the fallback model. Confirm your host’s behavior for direct navigation to routes that were not pre-rendered.

Implement and verify the page
- Inventory routes: separate fixed calculator URLs from parameterized ones, then decide which concrete variants should be emitted.
- Prepare stable render data: put the page explanation, default state, and genuinely build-time data in the route’s render path. Account for loaders, which execute at build time for pre-rendered paths.
- Configure pre-rendering: add
prerendertoreact-router.config.tsastrue, an explicit list, or an async path-producing function, as appropriate. - Select deployment behavior: retain SSR if requests need server-time rendering or route behavior; otherwise build for static delivery and configure the host’s fallback for paths that are not generated.
- Hydrate and check interactions: load each generated page in a browser and confirm inputs, default values, and calculated outputs work after JavaScript runs.
- Test direct requests: open each generated URL directly, including parameterized variants, rather than testing only by navigating from the home page.
- Measure your own result: compare first-load behavior before and after pre-rendering under comparable conditions. The official documentation describes the rendering mechanisms but provides no calculator-specific benchmark or guaranteed improvement.
Check version compatibility
The configuration above follows React Router’s framework-mode documentation as accessed on October 4, 2026. React and React Router APIs and project setups can vary by version, so check the documentation matching the versions installed in your app before copying the example. The exact hosting configuration also depends on the static host and its fallback rules.
