Before pre-ordering an anime figure, verify when you will be charged, whether you can cancel at your order’s current stage, what happens if the release or shipment is delayed, and whether import costs come later. These terms vary by retailer, region, item, and order status; a preorder does not guarantee a deposit, a particular cancellation right, or a fixed delivery date.
Check the payment terms before you order
There is no universal deposit percentage or payment schedule for anime figure preorders. A retailer may collect payment when you order or later, such as when the item ships. Good Smile Company says payment terms vary by order and payment method, so check the specific product’s checkout terms and the applicable policy before submitting your order: Good Smile Company order terms.

Before placing the order, note the charge date, whether any amount is due upfront, and what the seller says happens if the order changes or is canceled. Do not assume a deposit is always required, or that it is automatically refundable or nonrefundable.

Cancellation depends on the retailer’s terms and the order’s status. A preorder is a commitment, and some sellers restrict cancellation even before release. Read the cancellation policy for the store and destination that apply to your order; a retailer’s policy example is not a general rule for every seller.

Good Smile Company
Good Smile Company says cancellation eligibility can depend on the item and order status. Its Japanese commercial transaction terms state that a change to the release timing does not give customers the right to cancel an order from that store. Check the terms for your specific order rather than assuming a release-date change will be grounds for cancellation.
AmiAmi
AmiAmi accepts cancellation requests for preorders up to release, but says a request may not always be approved. Its policy excludes some order states and warns that excessive or improper cancellations may lead to account restrictions. AmiAmi also published a US-bound notice dated August 29, 2025, describing special handling for certain orders on hold. It included customer-requested cancellation and refund options for paid, unshipped orders; processor fees and currency-exchange differences might not be reimbursed. That was a dated, region-specific notice, not a standing guarantee for all orders. Check the live notice and contact the seller about your own order.
Make a record before committing
- Find the last point at which the seller may accept a cancellation request, and whether approval is discretionary.
- Save the product listing, checkout terms, order confirmation, and payment record.
- Keep seller notices about changes to payment, release timing, or order status.
What happens if a preorder is delayed?
A release estimate can change, and the remedy depends on the seller’s contract and the consumer rules where you live. For example, Crunchyroll’s EU FAQ says release dates or availability may change and that orders cannot be canceled after they have shipped or are being prepared for shipping. Good Smile Company’s Japanese terms say a release-time change does not permit cancellation for that store.

For orders shipped to the United States
The US Federal Trade Commission’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule generally requires a seller to ship within the timeframe stated in its offer. If no shipping timeframe is stated, the default is 30 days. If the seller cannot ship on time, it must notify you and offer the choice to agree to the delay or cancel for a full refund. See the FTC’s guide to the rule. This is US guidance; readers elsewhere should check the consumer authority and rules for their jurisdiction.
When a seller announces a delay, read the notice and act within any response deadline it gives. If you want to cancel, use the seller’s stated process and retain the request and response. Do not treat a retailer’s estimated release date as a guaranteed arrival date.

Work out the likely delivered cost, not just the listing price
The checkout total may not include customs duties or import taxes. Good Smile Company says these charges vary by country or region and shipment contents, and that it cannot estimate them. Its shipping guide also says the customer is responsible for applicable customs charges: Good Smile Company shipping guide.
For US territories, Good Smile Company’s May 22, 2025 notice says customers are responsible for applicable duties, import taxes, and handling charges. It also explains that customs origin is based on where a product was manufactured, not simply the country from which it ships. The notice warns that government customs measures can change, so it is not a current tariff-rate estimate: Good Smile Company notice on US-territory customs charges.

Before ordering internationally, check whether duties are collected at checkout or billed later by the carrier or customs authority. The amount can depend on destination, item classification, declared value, and current rules; do not rely on a rate estimate that lacks those details.
Check shipping, release schedules, and address details
Shipping arrangements can affect both cost and delivery timing. Good Smile Company says international preorder items ship separately according to their individual release schedules, and it does not offer combined shipping for them. A second figure in the same order may therefore mean a separate shipment rather than one consolidated delivery.
Before paying, compare the seller’s shipping fee and method, whether tracking is included, the dispatch schedule, and the deadline for changing your address. Good Smile Company says it is not liable for failed delivery caused by an error in the address supplied by the customer, so check the address carefully and use the seller’s procedure for any permitted update.

Policies from Good Smile Company, AmiAmi, and Crunchyroll illustrate why the same assumptions do not apply to every preorder. They do not establish a best retailer or a universal standard. Compare the actual terms for your item, region, and order status:
