Open your Dell convertible into laptop mode and press its physical power button once. If it does not start, connect the correct power adapter and try again. Opening the lid can start some Dell models, but only if the laptop supports the feature and it is enabled in BIOS.
Start the laptop with its power button

Open the convertible so the base and keyboard are accessible.

Press the physical power button once. Dell’s Inspiron 5491 2-in-1 guide and Inspiron 5591 2-in-1 guide show the button on the base. Its exact location varies by model; consult the manual for your specific laptop if you cannot find it.

If the laptop does not start
Connect the power adapter specified for your model, then press the power button once more. Dell’s Inspiron 12 5280 2-in-1 Quick Start Guide shows connecting the adapter before pressing the power button. That guide is model-specific: check your own model’s requirements rather than assuming one adapter specification fits all Dell convertibles.

Can you turn on a Dell laptop by opening the lid?
Sometimes. Dell says some newer laptops can wake or power on automatically when the lid opens. This is an optional, model-dependent feature called Power On Lid Open, not a universal behavior. Dell lists the Inspiron 7506 2-in-1 among supported products in its Power On Lid Open support article, last modified 19 April 2026.

Restart the laptop. At the Dell logo, press F2 to enter BIOS setup.

Toggle the setting to your preference, choose Apply or Apply Changes, then exit.

If Power On Lid Open is not listed in BIOS, Dell states that the computer does not support the feature.
