Check the exact model’s input voltage, required wattage or current, connector and operating limits before buying a power bank, battery or cable. A USB-C PD bank may run a compatible camera, while a video light may need NP-F batteries, a D-Tap connection or regulated 48 V power. One battery system should not be assumed to work for every device.
How do I choose power for a road-shoot setup?
Start with the manuals for the exact camera and each light. Record the supported input, voltage, current or wattage, connector, required cable and any restrictions on battery operation. Physical fit alone does not prove electrical compatibility.

- List each device and its model. Note whether it accepts USB power, a DC coupler, a battery mount or a dedicated input.
- Match the electrical requirement. Check voltage, sustained current or wattage, USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) profile, connector and cable rating. For a light, verify whether battery operation supports full output or limits brightness.
- Size the battery for the intended shoot. Occasional backup, a full shooting day and continuous operation have different capacity and redundancy needs. Estimate runtime from the device’s actual draw at the selected setting and the battery’s usable energy, allowing for conversion losses, discharge limits and other connected loads.
- Plan the physical setup. Allow for charging time and spares; secure batteries and cables with strain relief, route them so they cannot snag or pull over a stand, and account for weather exposure.
- Test the complete configuration before leaving. Run the camera and lights in the intended modes, with the actual cables and batteries, and confirm that nothing shuts down or limits output.
Can I run my camera from a USB-C power bank?
Only if the camera supports USB-PD power input and the source and cable meet its requirements. USB-C describes the connector, not the power a particular camera accepts. For example, Sony’s ILME-FX5/ILME-FX5B Help Guide calls for a USB-PD source and USB-C cable rated for at least 27 W (9 V, 3 A).

Sony says the FX5 can receive power over USB during shooting and playback, but the camera may still draw on its installed battery. The guide instructs users to insert a sufficiently charged battery before connecting external power; if the battery’s remaining capacity is insufficient, the camera will not function. It also warns that USB power may shorten continuous video recording time because the camera’s internal temperature can rise.

Powering the camera is not necessarily the same as charging its battery. Sony notes that when a camera is on and operating from USB, its battery may not charge and can, under some conditions, supplement the external supply. Sony also does not guarantee that every external power source will work. Check the instructions for your specific camera and confirm the relevant USB power setting or port behavior in its menu.
What if I use a Sony DC coupler?
A DC coupler has its own compatibility and supply requirements; do not choose one solely because its plug fits. In a Sony USA support article published July 9, 2026, Sony specifies a supply of at least 65 W for the DC-C1 and at least 100 W for the DC-C2. Confirm that the exact coupler is supported by your camera and that the supply meets its requirement using Sony’s DC-coupler power guidance.

What battery do I need for a video light?
The answer depends on the fixture. A compact light may accept camera-style batteries or a DC lead; a larger COB fixture may need high-voltage regulated power and enough capacity to sustain its draw.

amaran 100d/x S and 200d/x S
These fixtures use regulated 48 V through a 3-pin XLR battery input. Aputure specifies at least 110 W capacity for the 100d/x S and at least 230 W for the 200d/x S. Aputure says third-party solutions can work if they provide regulated 48 V through 3-pin XLR; a battery that connects but cannot sustain the required power may fail, shut down or limit output. Follow the Aputure battery-power guidance for the relevant model.
Aputure LS 600d
The LS 600d’s published specifications list maximum power consumption up to 720 W. Aputure distinguishes dual V-mount or Gold-mount battery operation at half output from 48 V XLR input at full output. Check the LS 600d technical specifications before planning a battery setup; a V-mount or Gold-mount battery is not automatically compatible with every fixture, since voltage conversion and output capacity still matter.

How do I estimate runtime without guessing?
Use the draw for the actual operating mode and brightness, not just a fixture’s name or maximum rating. Compare that load with the battery’s usable energy after accounting for voltage conversion, discharge limits and any simultaneous camera or accessory use. Leave a reserve rather than planning to run a battery to its limit. The manufacturer figures above specify device requirements or ratings; they do not establish a universal runtime.

What should I test before a road shoot?
- Confirm the camera works from the intended source in the actual recording mode, with the battery installed if its manual requires one.
- Check that each light reaches the output you need on battery power and remains stable under load.
- Inspect connectors, cable ratings and routing; secure cables so movement cannot disconnect equipment or destabilize a stand.
- Verify the charging and spare-battery plan for the length of the shoot, including other devices drawing from the same source.
