Start by clipping the lavalier capsule near the center of the chest, around the sternum, on a stable clothing edge. Keep it exposed to the speaker’s voice, prevent fabric or hair from rubbing it, secure the cable with a little slack near the mic, and record a short test while the speaker talks and moves. Adjust from there: no single distance works for every microphone, outfit, and recording situation.
Choose a starting position
The center chest is a useful first try because it keeps the mic relatively close to the voice and can limit level changes as the speaker turns from side to side. RØDE describes the sternum as a general-purpose position for balancing proximity and natural sound; Shure’s measurements vary by microphone and context, so treat them as starting points rather than a universal specification.

These figures describe different products or contexts. Start near the sternum, then listen and adjust for the actual mic and voice. A chest-mounted mic may change in level as the speaker moves their head; it will not stay as consistent as a headworn mic.
Clip it to the clothing
Shirt, blouse, lapel, or tie
Use a firm edge above the sternum, such as a lapel, tie, pocket edge, or shirt opening. Keep the capsule facing into open space rather than hiding it behind a fold. Check that the collar or fabric cannot brush the capsule when the wearer speaks or turns.

T-shirt or sweater
A collar may be the most stable attachment point, but fabric near the neck can rub the mic, and a collar position may sound muffled. If the voice lacks clarity, try a slightly lower or more central stable point, provided the mic remains secure and unobstructed.
Concealed placement
Concealment makes rubbing and vibration more likely. Use a compatible mount or tape, keep the mic and the first few inches of cable from rubbing against the body or fabric, and secure the cable with a small slack loop. Manage the cable, wind, and breath noise
- Secure the cable: Attach it to clothing so it cannot swing or pull on the capsule. Leave a little slack close to the mic as strain relief. For a hidden setup, excess cable can be routed behind the fabric, with a small loop and a secured length inside the shirt.
- Use a windscreen when needed: A compatible foam windscreen can reduce breath noise and light wind. In heavier outdoor wind, RØDE recommends a furry windshield. Check that the cover fits the microphone and mount.
- Try an upside-down clip for plosives: RØDE suggests mounting the mic upside down in its clip to reduce bursts from hard consonants. Test it with your own mic; it is not a guaranteed fix for every capsule.
- Check for rubbing: Hair, jewelry, hands, clothing edges, and the cable can all contact the mic. Listen for rustles and bumps during movement, not just while standing still.
A furry cover can be more visible than a bare capsule, so weigh wind protection against concealment needs.

Omnidirectional lavaliers are generally easier to position and less susceptible to wind and cable noise. Cardioid or supercardioid models can help in some situations where background noise or feedback is a concern, but they may be more sensitive to placement and more susceptible to plosives, wind, proximity effect, and cable noise. Follow the mic’s intended orientation and test it in the real recording environment.

Test the position before recording
- Attach the mic where you expect to use it, with the intended clothing, windscreen, and cable routing.
- Record the same short sentence at each candidate position, keeping the speaker and recording setup consistent.
- Listen back with headphones for clear, natural speech; muffled, thin, or boomy tone; breath or plosive noise; and fabric rustle or cable bumps.
- Have the speaker turn, walk, or make the movements they will make during the recording. Reposition or secure the mic if those actions create noise or change the voice level.
- Compare visibility and background pickup as well as sound. Choose the position that meets the production’s needs, then make another short check before the full take.
