You can play online with a friend on Xbox while you’re on PlayStation only when the specific game supports cross-play between your consoles. Both of you need a compatible version of that game, and you’ll usually connect through its in-game friends or invitation system—not by assuming the Xbox and PlayStation networks link automatically.
Check whether your exact game supports cross-play
Cross-play is a feature of an individual game, not a universal connection between Xbox and PlayStation. A game being available on both consoles does not mean its players can join the same match. Support may depend on the console generation and the multiplayer mode.

Before you buy, download, or troubleshoot, check the game’s official support page for both platforms and the mode you want to play. For example, EA’s Madden NFL 27 FAQ lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC for cross-play, but says cross-play invites are available only in select modes. A listing for “Xbox” or “PlayStation” alone may not tell you whether your console generation or preferred mode is supported.

Set up and invite your friend
- Confirm compatibility. Check the game’s official documentation for cross-play between the two consoles, including the relevant console generations and multiplayer mode.
- Install and update the game on both consoles. Both players need access to the same supported game and compatible versions. Make sure each can enter the online mode you plan to use.
- Check account-linking requirements. Open the game’s friends, social, or cross-play menu and follow its instructions to add your friend. Some games require a publisher account or linked account. For Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, PlayStation players must link an Xbox account to access cross-platform matches.
- Send or accept an invitation in the game. Use the game’s own friends list, lobby, or invite menu unless its official instructions say otherwise. On PS5, eligible players can also join game groups from a friend’s profile or the Play With Friends card; the available invitation method varies by game, according to PlayStation Support.
- Check online-play requirements. Some games require a platform online-multiplayer subscription. PlayStation says this applies to certain games and directs players to the relevant PlayStation Store listing; check the requirements for the game and console you’re using.
If the invite or match does not work
- Verify the mode. Cross-play may be limited to particular modes, even when the game supports cross-play elsewhere.
- Check console generation and game version. Confirm that the exact Xbox and PlayStation versions are compatible and that both copies are updated.
- Review the game’s cross-play and privacy settings. Cross-play may need to be enabled, and privacy or matchmaking settings may prevent invites. The setting and its location differ by title; Activision’s Black Ops 6 instructions are specific to that game and should not be assumed to apply to others.
- Confirm you are inviting the right account. Some games identify friends by a publisher account or in-game name rather than by their console-network account. Check whether either player needs to link an account.
- Use the game’s documented invite flow. PS5 system options can help with eligible game groups, but the game must support the cross-platform connection and recognize the friend through its own supported process.
Cross-play is not the same as shared progress
Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together. Cross-progression is about carrying progress between platforms, and support for one does not guarantee the other. EA notes that cross-play and cross-progression vary by game, and progression can have mode or console-generation limits. Check the game’s own documentation if you also want to carry saves, unlocks, or other progress between consoles.
