You can play Xbox games on a PC or Windows handheld by installing a PC edition, using an eligible Xbox Play Anywhere purchase, streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming, or remotely streaming from your own Xbox console. A fifth, limited option is Xbox’s early-release PC backward-compatibility program for four classic original Xbox games. These routes have different game catalogs, purchase rules, and hardware needs, so start by checking which one supports the specific game you want.
Which route should you use?
| Route | What runs the game? | What to check | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native PC installation | Your PC or Windows handheld | PC edition, Windows version, game requirements, and storage | Local play, including games that can be played offline (subject to the game’s DRM and features) |
| Xbox Play Anywhere | A native version on each supported device | Whether the exact title is eligible and supports account, save, and add-on syncing | One eligible digital purchase for Xbox and PC |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Xbox cloud servers | Supported device, region, streamable game, and subscription or purchase terms | Playing without installing the PC game locally |
| Xbox Remote Play | Your own Xbox console | Supported device, console settings and power state, internet connection, and installed game | Playing games from a console you own |
| Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC | The Xbox app on Windows 11, for the announced early-release titles | Current supported lineup, region, and hardware requirements | The limited selection of classic original Xbox games announced for PC |
Xbox’s handheld guidance and PC information describe these different ways to play. The “best fit” column is a practical summary of how each route works, not a performance comparison.

Can I play my Xbox games on my PC?
Often, but the answer depends on the game and what you own. If it has a PC edition, you can install that version and play it locally. If it is an eligible digital Xbox Play Anywhere title, one purchase can cover supported Xbox and PC versions. Otherwise, a console purchase does not automatically grant the PC edition; you may need to buy it separately.
Install a PC edition
On Windows, open the Xbox PC app, sign in, find a game with a PC version, and install it. Xbox says the app is preinstalled on most Windows 11 PCs; you can search for “Xbox” from Start or Windows Search. The app brings together games from most PC storefronts, but that does not turn every PC-storefront game into an Xbox console edition. Check the title’s listing and requirements before installing.

Xbox lists Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or later as the general Xbox PC app requirement, plus 150 MB of storage for the app itself and additional space for games. A display of 720p or higher is listed, and Windows S mode must be exited to play through the app. Individual games can require newer or more capable hardware. See Xbox’s Xbox on PC page for the current app information.
Use Play Anywhere for eligible titles
Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere designation on the game’s listing. For an eligible digital purchase, supported versions can be played on PC and Xbox without buying the game a second time. Supported progress, add-ons, and achievements sync through the Xbox account. This is a title-by-title program, not a transfer rule for every Xbox purchase. Xbox describes the eligibility and account details on its handheld page.
Stream instead of installing
Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you stream supported games rather than install a local PC version. Availability depends on the game, device, region, and applicable subscription or purchase terms. Xbox says Game Pass is required for some cloud-playable games; games outside a subscription’s included library may be sold separately. Owning a game or having it in a subscription does not guarantee that it is streamable. Check the live catalog and conditions on Xbox’s PC page.

Do I have to buy Xbox games again for PC?
Not always, but owning a console copy by itself does not generally give you the PC version. Xbox Play Anywhere is the key cross-buy exception: one eligible digital purchase covers supported versions on Xbox and PC. Check the exact game’s Play Anywhere status before relying on it. If it is not eligible, look for a PC edition’s separate purchase terms or use Remote Play to stream the game from your own console instead.
Can I play Xbox games on a handheld?
A Windows handheld is a portable PC, so it can install PC games that the device supports. It does not make every Xbox console game locally installable. You can also use Cloud Gaming or Remote Play when the device and service support them, or use Play Anywhere for eligible digital games.
Check compatibility, not just the Xbox label
Xbox’s handheld compatibility labels are Handheld optimized, Mostly compatible, Unsupported, and Not tested. A label can help you judge whether a title is likely to work well with handheld controls and settings, but it is not a frame-rate promise. Xbox cautions that some games need settings adjustments and that real performance varies by game and device. Check both the compatibility listing and the game’s PC requirements on the Xbox handheld page.

Example: ROG Xbox Ally models

The ROG Xbox Ally X is listed with Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24 GB of memory, and a 1 TB SSD. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent performance results. A game’s requirements and the compatibility label remain important for either model. Xbox also lists SanDisk microSD cards in 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities for the ROG Xbox Ally family; verify the exact device and card compatibility before buying. Yes, with Xbox Cloud Gaming, if the game, device, region, and subscription or purchase terms support streaming. Cloud play runs on Xbox servers, so it is not a local PC installation. Check the live catalog rather than assuming that all Game Pass games or all games you own are available to stream; Xbox’s PC page explains the service and its conditions.
Can I play my Xbox remotely on my PC?
Yes. Xbox Remote Play streams a game installed on your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S to a supported device. It uses your console, unlike Cloud Gaming, which runs the game on Xbox servers. Enable remote features on the console, keep it on or in Sleep mode, and use a supported device with an internet connection. The game must be available on the console. Check device and connection details on Xbox’s handheld and Remote Play information.

Does Xbox Game Pass work on a handheld?
It can, through different routes rather than one universal handheld mode. On a Windows handheld, you can install supported PC games through the Xbox PC app if the device meets the game’s requirements. Cloud Gaming can stream supported catalog titles where the device, region, and plan allow it. Remote Play can stream from your configured Xbox console. The available games and subscription conditions differ by route, so check the listing for the specific game.
What are the PC requirements for Xbox Backward Compatibility?
Xbox announced an early-release program on July 22, 2026, for four classic original Xbox games on Windows 11. The requirements below apply to that program, not to every Xbox PC game. Xbox’s announcement noted that it updated the minimum and recommended specifications on July 22 and identified drivers and versions as “Latest Version as of January 2026”; consult the live Xbox Wire announcement for the current details.
| Specification | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics | Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, or Intel Arc A310 | Radeon RX 6800S, Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti, or Intel Arc A770 |
| Processor | 4-core/8-thread Intel Core i3-10300, AMD Ryzen 3 3100, or AMD Ryzen Z2 A | 6-core/12-thread Intel Core i5-10400, AMD Ryzen 5 3600, or AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Video memory | 4 GB | 8 GB |
| Operating system | Windows 11 | Not stated in Xbox’s announcement |
Xbox named four games as available at launch in supported regions: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. The announcement said they could be purchased for PC and were included with all Xbox Game Pass plans. It also said an existing digital console license for these titles carried over to PC or handheld. Because the program is in early release, check the announcement for the current supported regions, lineup, and terms.
How to choose between a PC and a handheld
Choose based on the route and games you actually plan to use, rather than assuming one device covers every Xbox title. Compare these factors:
- Game availability: Is there a PC edition, Play Anywhere eligibility, cloud access, Remote Play support, or inclusion in the limited backward-compatibility lineup?
- Hardware: Does the PC or handheld meet the requirements for the local game? A handheld compatibility label is guidance, not a benchmark.
- Portability and controls: Consider screen size, built-in controls, and whether your games support the input you prefer. An Xbox Wireless Controller is an optional PC accessory, not a requirement for every game; Xbox lists controller options on its PC page.
- Storage and connectivity: Local installations take device storage. Cloud Gaming and Remote Play rely on streaming and an internet connection.
- Cost: Account for the device, any separately purchased PC edition, and subscription terms where relevant. A console purchase only transfers under the rules of a program such as Play Anywhere or the announced backward-compatibility offer.
Xbox’s official information cited here does not provide independent comparative benchmarks for PCs and handhelds, so it cannot establish that one device will perform better for every game.
