Yes—you can play some Total War games multiplayer. The exact options depend on the game: the official Total War: ROME II manual documents both multiplayer campaigns and battles, while a multiplayer campaign manual describes cooperative and head-to-head play. Those older manuals explain documented modes, but they do not confirm that a particular game’s online services are available today.
Which Total War games have multiplayer?
Multiplayer features are specific to each game and edition. The official Total War: ROME II manual lists separate multiplayer campaign and multiplayer battle options. That establishes what the manual documents for ROME II; it does not show that every Total War title offers the same modes or that ROME II matchmaking is currently online.

Before choosing a game, check its current official support information or whether its in-game multiplayer menu can connect. The available manuals do not establish present-day server status, platform or account requirements, or cross-play support.
What kinds of multiplayer can you play?
Co-operative campaign
In the documented co-op format, two players share a campaign and contend with AI-controlled opponents. The multiplayer campaign manual says players share campaign diplomacy and map visibility. During battles, one player can transfer control of troops to the other; gifted units become part of the recipient’s army. See the official multiplayer campaign manual for these mechanics.
#1 Best Overall
- New Real-time 3D Naval Warfare. Players control single ships or vast fleets with fully destructible sails as well as cannon and musket action, boarding raids and more. This is the complete naval combat experience.
- All-new Game Engine. With a newly created Windows XP-compatible DirectX 9 graphics engine, players will experience real-time seascapes, dynamic weather and a new advanced landscape and flora system.
- Episodic Campaign. Improves accessibility to the game by gradually introducing advanced features over time.
- Massive Scope. Over 30 in-game factions encompass all of the World's major powers including the United States of America.and dodge pursuers using the stylus.
- Brand New Multiplayer Modes. Players vie for a place at the top of the rankings and join leagues and ladders for even more gameplay challenges.
Head-to-head campaign
Head-to-head is a campaign played by two human opponents, with AI controlling the remaining factions. It is distinct from a one-off battle: the players compete over the course of the campaign.
Multiplayer battles and Quick Battle
A multiplayer battle is a standalone match against real opponents rather than a shared campaign. In the documented Quick Battle system, the game matches a player with a random opponent using skill-based matchmaking. Its manual describes ranked team battles up to and including 4v4. That limit and matchmaking description belong to that manual’s context; they are not a confirmed limit or current service promise for every Total War game. Details are in the official Quick Battle manual.

Are multiplayer battles ranked?
Not all documented battle options affect a leaderboard. The ROME II multiplayer battle manual says battles started through the battles list are social and do not increase leaderboard ranking; it distinguishes these from Quick Battle, which it treats as ranked. The manual’s wording is: “All battles played via the battles list are purely social, therefore they do not increase your leaderboard ranking.” See the ROME II Multiplayer Battle manual. This describes the manual’s system, not necessarily the current behavior of an online service.
How to choose the right mode
- Want to build a campaign with a friend? Look for co-operative campaign support in the specific game’s manual or menu.
- Want to compete over a campaign? Check for head-to-head campaign support; the documented format pits two humans against each other while AI controls other factions.
- Want a single match? Look for multiplayer battles. Check whether the mode is social or ranked rather than assuming every battle affects a leaderboard.
- Want matchmaking or a team match? Verify the game’s own rules and current menu. The documented Quick Battle manual describes skill-based random matchmaking and ranked play up to 4v4, but those details should not be generalized to other titles.
What to verify before you start
Manuals are useful for understanding intended game modes, but older documentation cannot confirm whether online play still works on your platform. For the exact title and edition, verify current service availability through official support information or the game’s multiplayer menu. Also confirm platform compatibility, account requirements, and whether friends need the same edition; the cited manuals do not settle those questions.
