You can play The Elder Scrolls: Arena on a modern Windows PC using Bethesda’s official Windows download or the Steam edition. Bethesda’s Windows package includes DOSBox and separate windowed and full-screen launch options, so you generally do not need to install or configure DOSBox separately.
Get Arena from Bethesda or Steam
Bethesda offers the full game from its official Arena page. Alternatively, Steam lists The Elder Scrolls: Arena as Free to Play (checked October 7, 2026). The available sources do not establish a technical gameplay difference between these downloads.

Install and launch the Windows version
- Download and install the game. Follow the installer for the copy you chose. Bethesda’s documented default install path is
C:Program Files (x86)Bethesda SoftworksArenaArena; your installation may use a different folder. - Choose a launch option. Bethesda’s Windows installation includes two batch files: one for full-screen play and one for windowed play. The installer may also create Start menu shortcuts. Try the other supplied option if one behaves badly; Bethesda does not say that either mode is universally more compatible.
- Start playing. The Windows package includes DOSBox, which runs this DOS-era game. Bethesda says its default DOSBox configuration works with the majority of hardware setups, so begin with the supplied configuration rather than changing emulator settings pre-emptively.

If Arena will not start
First confirm that the game finished installing and that you are launching it through one of the supplied shortcuts or batch files. If the windowed option fails, try full-screen, or vice versa. These are the launch paths Bethesda provides; neither is a guaranteed fix for every setup.

Bethesda says DOSBox is installed with Arena and that its standard configuration is intended to work for most hardware setups. It also states, “Bethesda Softworks does not provide support for this program.” Its DOSBox support page points users toward DOSBox documentation. The DOSBoxWiki Arena page includes community configuration suggestions, such as adjusting cycles or memory; those suggestions are not Bethesda guidance and are not established fixes for a particular PC.

Steam’s minimum requirements are listed in original-era terms: PC/MS-DOS 5.0, Intel 386 25 MHz, 4 MB RAM, and 25 MB of available storage. These are product specifications, not a guarantee of compatibility with a particular current Windows version, handheld, or emulator build. The Windows setup steps above are the documented path; exact macOS, Linux, and handheld instructions are not established by these sources.
