How to Play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Online With Friends

Use Online → Smash → Battle Arenas to create or join a custom-rule match. Players need internet access, Nintendo Switch Online, and matching game versions.

For a custom match with friends, open Online → Smash → Battle Arenas in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, then use the arena options shown on screen to create or join an arena. Before you start, each player needs an internet connection, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the same game software version.

What you need before playing online

  • Nintendo Switch Online: Each player needs a Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo lists Super Smash Bros. Ultimate among the games that require the paid service for online features. See Nintendo Switch Online.
  • Internet access: Connect each console to the internet before opening online play.
  • Matching game versions: Nintendo says all players must use the same software version. Its update page lists Ver. 13.0.5, released September 1, 2026; check the game’s software update menu on each console because version information can change. See Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update instructions.
  • A supported controller: Nintendo lists Joy-Con, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, and Nintendo Switch/GameCube controller options. A wired GameCube controller requires a GameCube Controller Adapter.

How to create or join an arena with friends

  1. Start Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and choose Online from the main menu. Acknowledge the online-play notice if it appears.
  2. Choose Smash.
  3. Select Battle Arenas to create or join an arena with custom rules. Follow the controls and prompts displayed in the current arena menus.
  4. Select your controller and fighter, then choose Ready to Fight when prompted.

Nintendo’s public setup instructions explain how to enter Battle Arenas but do not specify a friend-only discovery sequence, required password, room code, or invitation flow. Use the current in-game arena options rather than assuming a code or a particular invite method is required. Nintendo treats local wireless as a separate mode, not as the online arena flow. See Nintendo’s multiplayer setup instructions.

Battle Arenas or Quickplay?

Mode Use it for Important distinction
Battle Arenas Creating or joining an arena with custom rules. Choose this for an arena session; follow the current in-game controls to create or join.
Quickplay Online matchmaking. Nintendo says Co-op, for two players sharing one console, is available in Quickplay battles only.

Can two people play online from one Switch?

Yes. Nintendo’s setup guide describes online play as one to two players per console and says the two-player Co-op option is available in Quickplay only. Separately, Nintendo’s product listing describes online play as two to four players overall; that is a total-online figure, not a stated per-console count. Check Nintendo’s product listing for its published player count.

If online play will not connect

If you see “You Cannot Play Online Battles Right Now,” Nintendo says the connection could not continuously send or receive data. A slow or unstable connection, wireless interference, or unresponsive networking equipment may contribute. First check that each console is online and that both copies of the game are updated to the same version; for further steps, consult Nintendo’s online error-code support.
