Streaming leaves the game’s rendering work to your PC; DroidDeck runs Steam and compatible games on the handheld, so it depends on that device’s hardware and software compatibility.
How Steam game streaming works on Android
With Steam Remote Play, a PC runs the game and sends its video and audio to another device. The Android handheld sends controller input back to the host. The game is not running on the handheld, and the PC must be available while you play. The quality of the experience also depends on the connection between the devices. What DroidDeck changes
DroidDeck is a different approach: it runs Valve’s Linux ARM64 Steam client in Big Picture mode on supported Android handhelds. Games execute on the handheld rather than being streamed from a PC. DroidDeck’s FAQ explicitly distinguishes this from streaming services and apps such as Steam Link, Moonlight, and GeForce NOW.

The project describes a layered compatibility environment: Steam runs in a proot Linux environment with the gamescope compositor; Windows games are launched using ARM64 Proton, with FEX translating instructions for the device’s ARM hardware. This is not a stream from a PC or a Windows virtual machine. The handheld itself does the work, so its chipset and the game’s compatibility matter directly.

Check whether your handheld is supported
DroidDeck’s FAQ specifies Android 9 or newer and a Snapdragon chipset with Adreno 730 or newer, or Adreno 8xx. The project README lists Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710 as unsupported. These requirements are specific to DroidDeck; they are not requirements for receiving a Steam Remote Play stream.

The project identifies the Ayn Odin 2, Retroid Pocket 5, and Ayaneo Pocket S as verified handhelds. “Verified” does not guarantee that every game will work or perform well: DroidDeck says hardware validation is limited, and compatibility and performance vary by device. Consult the project README and FAQ for current device and compatibility information.

Install DroidDeck and start Steam
- Confirm the device first. Check that your Android version and chipset meet DroidDeck’s stated requirements, and that you have enough free storage. The project estimates about 3 GB for the runtime plus another 1.1 GB for the desktop and emulators; these are installation estimates, not performance figures.
- Get the APK. Download it from the project’s Releases page.
- Install the Linux runtime. Open DroidDeck and follow its runtime installation flow. Allow the download and setup to finish before trying to launch Steam.
- Check Android’s child-process setting. The README says to turn off “Restrict child processes” before Steam launches. It describes a guided fix for some Android 12 and 13 devices; follow the app’s guidance if the setting or prompt appears.
- Launch Steam and sign in. The first launch downloads Steam components. Once setup completes, sign in and use Big Picture mode with the handheld’s controls.
What to expect from the current interface
DroidDeck 0.3.0, published on 2026-10-02, adds a handheld-focused feature set described in the project’s release notes: Steam Deck-style controller support, gyro, Steam Input virtual pads, performance and battery overlays, GPU driver selection, Flathub ARM64 apps, user-supplied AppImages, and in-app update channels. The release notes also report Steam startup falling from about 31 seconds to about 6. That is the project’s own comparison, not an independent benchmark, and it does not establish game performance.

Choose the approach that fits your setup
- Choose streaming if you have a capable gaming PC and a suitable connection, or if your Android handheld does not meet DroidDeck’s hardware requirements.
- Consider DroidDeck if your device is supported and you want games to run locally without a PC streaming host.
- Check individual games before committing to local play. Support is not universal, and anti-cheat, compatibility layers, chipset, and device-specific performance can affect whether a title works.
DroidDeck says it is not affiliated with Valve. Its compatibility, offline-play, and cloud-feature statements are project documentation rather than independent test results; check its current FAQ for those details.
