To play Spotify on another device, start a song in Spotify, open Connect device in the playback controls, and select the destination. For a speaker’s first connection, Spotify says the devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
How Spotify Connect works
Spotify Connect lets one device remotely control playback on another. Your phone or computer acts as the controller; the selected speaker or other compatible device plays the audio. Spotify describes it as a way to “use one device to remotely control listening on another.” Spotify Support: Spotify Connect.

Connect is distinct from Bluetooth, AirPlay, Chromecast Audio, and voice-assistant playback. Spotify lists these as separate ways to play on speakers, and the available options depend on the speaker or receiver.
Connect Spotify to a speaker or other device
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the destination supports Spotify Connect. Spotify recommends checking its compatibility information or asking the device manufacturer.
- Use the same Wi-Fi for the first speaker connection. Spotify specifies this for the first connection; it does not mean every subsequent Connect session always requires both devices to stay on the same network.
- Start playback. Open Spotify on your phone or computer and play a song, podcast, or other audio.
- Open the device list. Tap or click Connect device, the device icon in the playback controls.
- Select where to listen. Choose the speaker or other compatible destination from the list.
After playback has been paused for more than 10 minutes, Spotify says you may need to reconnect from the device list.

Why a device may not appear
Check for similarly named devices
If the list contains multiple devices with the same name, try selecting them one at a time to identify the intended speaker.
Check login and local-device visibility
Spotify says signing in to Spotify on the target device may make it appear in the app even when it is not on the same Wi-Fi. In the mobile app, you can also turn off Local device visibility under Settings > Apps and devices to let the app see devices that are not currently on the same Wi-Fi.

Check web player limits
The Spotify web player lists devices that are already logged in. In Chrome, it can also show Google Cast devices on the current network. If the destination is missing, try the Spotify app instead.

On iPhone, go to iPhone Settings > Spotify > Local Network and allow access. Without that permission, Spotify may not discover devices on the local network.

What to do when Spotify Connect will not work
- Restart Spotify, the speaker or smart display, and the device running Spotify.
- Update the Spotify app and the destination device’s software.
- Put the devices on the same Wi-Fi network and try again.
- Restart the Wi-Fi network or test another network.
- On Android TV, allow Spotify to display over other apps in the TV’s special app access settings.
How to choose another way to play on a speaker
Spotify lists Spotify Connect, voice assistants, Bluetooth, AUX or USB, Chromecast Audio, and Apple AirPlay as speaker playback methods. Check which methods your existing speaker supports before choosing one; a generic label such as “Wi-Fi speaker” does not establish Spotify Connect compatibility.

Protect your account if you see an unfamiliar device
A device you do not recognize may belong to someone on a shared network, or your Spotify account may still be logged in on another person’s device. To limit the mobile app’s device list to local devices, turn on Local device visibility in Settings > Apps and devices. If you suspect someone else has access to your account, log out of that device, unlink Spotify in the manufacturer’s app, use the account page’s sign-out-everywhere option, and change your password as appropriate. Spotify explains these steps in its Spotify Connect guidance.
Playback is limited to one device at a time
Spotify’s supported-devices guidance says one account can play on one device at a time. Selecting a Connect destination transfers playback there; it does not start a separate simultaneous stream on every device signed in to the account. Device support and app requirements vary by platform, so check Spotify’s supported devices page for current compatibility details.
Adjust Connect volume in Spotify
On iPhone, use the Spotify app’s volume slider to adjust Connect playback. Spotify says Apple discontinued the technology that previously enabled volume control with iPhone hardware buttons.
