Build the roguelite as a deterministic simulation first, then add the browser renderer and AI director around it. Each turn should be a defined transition from the current state, an explicit action, and controlled random input. Record the starting seed and actions so the same run can be replayed, tested headlessly, and compared after code changes.
What a deterministic baseline means
A deterministic game produces the same next state when given the same current state, action, and random state. In practical terms, game rules should not depend on when the browser happens to render a frame, the current wall-clock time, or an unrecorded call to ambient randomness.

Keep the authoritative simulation separate from drawing and input capture. The browser can display the current state and collect player or AI actions; a rules layer validates each action and applies it. Hayao describes this state-step-state approach, seeded randomness, headless Node execution, replay, and state hashing at its project website. That site characterizes the game as “a pure function of its inputs”; this is a project description, not a universal guarantee for other games.
How to structure the game and browser
Make state transitions explicit
Represent the run as data: for example, the current floor, player statistics, inventory, enemies, map, progression flags, and random-generator state. A transition function accepts that state and a proposed action, checks the rules, and returns the next state. Keep combat, map generation, and run progression in this same explicit model rather than embedding them in browser event handlers.

Keep rendering out of the rules
The rendering loop should read state and draw it; it should not decide whether a turn elapsed or whether an attack landed. This lets a browser view and a headless test harness use the same rules. Dino Arena documents a simulation module used by both a browser loop and a Node benchmark harness (project description). Dinoz documents a different arrangement: a server-authoritative simulation whose browser client renders snapshots and submits actions (README).
Those examples illustrate options, not a universal deployment rule. A single-player game may run its simulation in the browser; multiplayer, anti-cheat, or deployment requirements may favor server authority. In either case, preserve a clean boundary between presentation and authoritative state changes.

How to seed randomness and replay a run
Use a seeded random-number generator for every random decision that affects the run: procedural layouts, loot, enemy behavior, and other rule outcomes. Avoid direct calls to ambient randomness in authoritative game code. Store the seed and the ordered action history; if the generator’s state can change independently of the action sequence, record or otherwise preserve that state too.

- Start a run: accept or generate a seed, initialize the random generator, and create the initial game state from it.
- Advance the run: submit explicit actions to the transition function and append accepted actions to the run log.
- Replay: initialize from the same seed and feed the recorded actions through the same transition function in the same order.
- Compare: inspect the resulting state or a stable state hash at selected points to identify where a code change alters the run.
The TypeScript project roguelite-core documents seeded procedural maps, run reducers, and batch simulation as implementation patterns (README). Hayao also documents replay and hash comparison. These project materials show approaches; they do not establish that a new game will produce identical results across every browser, runtime, or machine.

How to let an AI direct the game without giving it the rules
Give the director a documented contract: a structured observation of relevant game state, plus a bounded set of things it may propose. Depending on the design, those proposals might be a level modifier, an encounter, a narrative beat, or a legal action. The deterministic simulation—not the model—must validate the proposal and decide whether and how it changes authoritative state.
This boundary makes the AI an input source rather than an alternate rules engine. A model response can be missing, malformed, delayed, or invalid; the game should reject or safely handle it through defined rules rather than letting an unconstrained model call resolve combat or mutate state directly. Keep model calls out of the authoritative transition itself, and log accepted proposals alongside player actions if they affect replay.

How to test runs and catch regressions
Because the rules can run without a browser, execute fixed seed suites headlessly. Replay known action sequences after changes and compare state hashes or structured states at key steps. When a difference appears, the seed and action history provide a reproducible case to investigate rather than a report that depends on a player’s exact timing.
- Test map generation and run progression for invalid or unreachable states.
- Check combat transitions for illegal actions and inconsistent outcomes.
- Run batches of seeded cases to look for unwinnable content, regressions, or shifts that merit balance review.
- Include build and playability checks; the OpenGame paper abstract describes headless-browser execution in its evaluation pipeline and notes that code agents still struggle to produce fully playable games from high-level designs (paper abstract).
Batch results can surface patterns for human review, but they do not by themselves prove that a game is balanced or enjoyable. Those are project-level outcomes that require appropriate playtesting and evaluation.

What determinism does—and does not—guarantee
A deterministic baseline supports repeatable tests and replay when the same inputs are processed by the same rules implementation. It does not establish universal bit-for-bit behavior across browsers and machines, nor does it guarantee fun, fairness, or balance. Test the runtimes you intend to support and keep nondeterministic APIs out of authoritative game logic.
Fixed timesteps and seeded randomness are documented approaches in the Open Terrain Engine vision page (project vision), but that page says browser support is outside its v1 scope and describes an engine still in development. It should not be treated as a browser-ready implementation. More broadly, project documentation can demonstrate a stated design pattern, but compatibility and quality must be established in the game being built.
