Yes—you can play Satisfactory with friends without running a dedicated server. One player loads a normal save as an online session, chooses who may join, and then invites friends or shares the session ID. The host’s game is the active world, so friends can play together while that host remains online.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Satisfactory servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
A dedicated server becomes useful only when the factory must remain available while the original host is offline. For ordinary co-op, the built-in player-hosted session is the simpler option.

A player-hosted session uses the game running on one participant’s computer as the multiplayer host. The host starts or loads the save, and other players connect to that running session. There is no separate server installation in this setup.
The trade-off is availability: the world is reachable while the host is running the session. If the host exits the game, loses the connection, or stops hosting, other players cannot continue in that world until the host starts it again. A dedicated server is a different model designed to keep a world online independently of any one player.

What you need before inviting anyone
- A copy of Satisfactory with a save that the host can load.
- An online connection for every participant.
- For PC cross-play, either a session ID or linked Epic accounts and Epic friendships.
- For console hosting or joining, an Epic Games account. The console version uses Epic Online Services (EOS) for multiplayer and cross-play.
You do not need to rent a server or configure dedicated-server software for this co-op method. Network quality, firewall rules, and NAT behavior can still affect whether players connect successfully.
Host a Satisfactory session step by step
1. Start or load the world
Use a normal save and start it as an online multiplayer session. The player who performs this step is the host, and that player’s game remains the active session. You can begin with a new world or load an existing factory.
2. Choose the privacy mode
Select the privacy setting that matches how you want friends to enter:
- Friends Only: people on the host’s friend list can find the session from the Join Game menu without a separate invitation. This mode also permits joining with a session ID.
- Private: only players who receive an in-game invitation can join. A session ID will not locate a Private session.
If you expect to distribute an ID, choose Friends Only rather than Private. If you want the host to control every entrant through explicit invitations, use Private.
3. Open the session controls
- Enter the world.
- Press
Esc. - Open Manage Session.
- Select Session Settings.
- Copy the displayed Session ID.
Share the ID only with the people who should access that world. Treat it as the join credential for the session and avoid posting it publicly.
4. Invite or share the ID
You can invite players through the game’s invitation controls, or send the copied session ID to your friends. Friends Only supports both the friend-list route and ID joining. Private sessions require in-game invitations, so sending an ID alone will not bypass that restriction.
5. Keep the host’s session running
Friends can play while the host remains in the session. Before the host leaves, agree on who will continue at the next play window and where the latest save is stored. The host must start the world again for the group to return to it.
How friends join the session
Joining on PC with a session ID
- Have the host copy the ID from Esc → Manage Session → Session Settings.
- Open Satisfactory’s multiplayer join screen.
- Enter the session ID supplied by the host.
- Confirm the join request and wait for the host’s session to appear.
The host must be running the world, and the session must not be set to Private. If the ID does not find anything, verify the privacy mode and ask the host to copy a fresh ID from the active session.
Joining through linked Epic accounts
On PC, Steam and Epic players can play together by linking an Epic account and adding each other as Epic friends. The cross-store option is separate from which PC storefront owns the game; both players still connect to the host’s active session.

Joining with an invitation
An in-game invitation is the required route for a Private session. The host sends the invitation after entering the world, and the invited player accepts it from the game’s multiplayer interface.
Steam, Epic, and console compatibility
| Players | Supported method | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Steam PC and Epic PC | Session ID or linked Epic accounts | Use Friends Only for ID-based discovery; linked accounts require Epic friendships. |
| Console with console | Console multiplayer through EOS | Each player needs an Epic Games account to host or join. |
| Console with PC | Not supported | The official FAQ keeps the console and PC ecosystems separate. |
| Console with a dedicated server | Not supported | Consoles cannot join dedicated servers. |
These boundaries matter before troubleshooting. A console player who cannot join a PC friend is facing a platform limitation, not necessarily a firewall problem. Likewise, moving to a dedicated server does not make a console-to-PC connection possible.
Does the host have to be online?
Yes. In a player-hosted session, the host’s running game is the server. Other players cannot enter that world when the host is offline. This is the defining difference from a dedicated server, which runs separately and can remain available for players with different schedules.
Player hosting works well when the group normally plays together, when one person is happy to start the save, or when you want to avoid server administration. It is less suitable when players expect to build, explore, or automate independently at any hour.

| Decision point | Player-hosted session | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Available while the host is running the world. | Designed to stay available while individual players are offline. |
| Setup effort | Start or load the save, choose privacy, then invite or share the ID. | Requires server setup plus networking, firewall, and port configuration. |
| Cost | Uses the game you already own; no separate co-op charge is identified. | A hosting service may add a recurring cost; the amount depends on provider and region. |
| Control | Managed through in-game privacy, invitations, and session settings. | Managed through server administration and network configuration. |
| PC storefront scope | Steam and Epic PC players can connect with session IDs or linked Epic accounts. | Platform compatibility still follows the game’s supported ecosystem rules. |
| Console access | Console players require Epic accounts; console and PC ecosystems remain separate. | Consoles cannot join dedicated servers. |
Choose player hosting when the host’s schedule is compatible with the group and you want the fewest moving parts. Consider a dedicated server when the primary requirement is a persistent world, not merely a way to connect friends.
Troubleshoot a friend who cannot join
Work through the checks in this order so you can separate a session-setting problem from a network problem.
Confirm that the session is joinable
- Ask the host to verify that the world is currently running.
- Check whether the session is Friends Only or Private.
- If it is Private, use an in-game invitation; an ID will not find it.
- If using an ID, copy it again from Esc → Manage Session → Session Settings and send the current value.
Change the host
Have another player host the same group session and test again. If the connection works with a different host, the original host’s firewall, NAT, network quality, or local installation is the more likely cause.
Set Network Quality to Ultra
Set everyone’s Network Quality to Ultra, restart the game, and retry the connection. Apply the setting to every participant rather than changing it only on the host.
Test a fresh save
Create or load a fresh save and attempt a join. If the fresh world works but the established factory does not, the issue may be tied to that particular save rather than the basic multiplayer path. Keep the original save untouched while testing.
Check firewall and security software
Allow Satisfactory through the operating system firewall and any security software that filters network traffic. A blocked game executable can look like a failed session ID even when the host and privacy settings are correct.

Review the documented ports
The official FAQ lists these ports for multiplayer troubleshooting:
- TCP: 5222 and 6666
- UDP: 5222, 6666, and 7777–7827
Most players do not need to configure ports manually. Investigate them when firewall or NAT behavior prevents the session from connecting. If you change router or firewall rules, apply the same intended policy consistently and retest after restarting the game.

A Steam PC player and an Epic PC player can connect through the supported cross-play methods. A console player cannot join a PC session, and a console cannot join a dedicated server. Do not spend time forwarding ports to solve a restriction that is defined by the platform combination.
Protect the shared world and its saves
The official support guidance places Satisfactory saves in:
%LOCALAPPDATA%FactoryGameSavedSaveGames
Copy the save files to another location for backup, especially when cloud saves are enabled. A separate copy gives the host a recovery point if a save is overwritten, damaged, or out of sync.
Back up before branch changes
Coffee Stain’s developer updates also advise backing up saves before trying Experimental builds. Keep the backup outside the active save directory and label it with the date and game branch so you can identify the correct restore point.
Back up before transferring hosting duties
If another player will become the regular host, make a verified copy before transferring the save. Confirm that the new host can load the copy locally before the original host stops using the primary file.
Use cloud saves as convenience, not as your only backup
Cloud synchronization can help move progress between installations, but it can also preserve an unwanted or newer file. Maintain a manual copy in another location so you can choose which version to restore.
When a dedicated server is actually justified
The deciding question is whether the world must remain online without the original host. If players have different schedules and need to enter the same factory independently, a dedicated server addresses that requirement. It also shifts responsibility toward server administration, access control, backups, firewall rules, and port management.
Coffee Stain’s March 11, 2025 developer update describes a reliable-messaging change for dedicated servers: a single server uses TCP port 8888 by default, with support for a range of up to 512 ports. NAT or firewall port remapping must be configured consistently when those ports are changed. This detail applies to dedicated-server networking, not to the basic in-game session workflow.

If your group always plays together and the host can be present, moving to a dedicated server adds complexity without solving a problem you currently have. Start with player hosting, then reassess only if host availability becomes the limiting factor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common setup pitfalls to avoid
The most frequent mistakes are mismatching the privacy mode and join method. A Friends Only session can be discovered from Join Game and accepts a session ID, while a Private session requires an in-game invitation. Sending an ID to someone when the session is Private will not work, even if the ID was copied correctly.
Another mistake is copying an ID before the host has entered the intended save, or reusing an old ID after changing sessions. Have the host enter the world first, open Esc → Manage Session → Session Settings, and send the value shown for that active session. If the host loads a different save later, repeat the process rather than assuming the previous value still applies.
Do not treat the session ID as a substitute for platform compatibility. It can connect Steam and Epic players on PC, but it cannot bridge the separate console and PC ecosystems. Console players also need an Epic Games account for multiplayer, regardless of which other players are present.
Finally, do not close the host’s game while friends are still working. Player hosting does not hand the world to another participant automatically. Plan a stopping point, save normally, and tell the group who will launch the world next time.
Planning saves and hosting changes
For a regular group, designate a primary host and a backup host. The primary host can keep the main save, while the backup host maintains a dated copy in another location. If schedules change, the backup host can test the copied file before taking over. This approach does not create a persistent server, but it reduces downtime when the usual host is unavailable.
Keep the latest confirmed save identifiable. A simple date-and-branch label helps distinguish a current stable file from an Experimental-build backup. When cloud synchronization presents multiple versions, pause and compare the local backup before accepting a replacement; the manual copy is the recovery option if the synchronized file is not the one you want.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Changing hosts also changes the network path. If the same save works for one host but not another, repeat the Network Quality, firewall, and fresh-save checks for the new machine. A successful test with a different host is useful evidence that the original host’s network or security configuration needs attention.
Cost and administration considerations
Normal co-op uses the game each player already owns and the in-game session system; no separate co-op fee is identified. A dedicated-server provider can add a recurring charge, with price depending on the provider and region. You also take on server setup, access management, backups, firewall rules, and port configuration. Those costs are justified when persistent availability matters, not simply because a friend needs help joining.
Buying networking hardware is not a prerequisite for player-hosted multiplayer. Start with the existing connection and security settings. Investigate NAT or firewall behavior only when the documented join methods fail, and change network rules carefully so the intended ports are treated consistently.
Best Value
A quick decision checklist
- Use player hosting if one person can be online whenever the group plays.
- Choose Friends Only when friends should find the world from Join Game or use a session ID.
- Choose Private when every entrant should receive an in-game invitation.
- Use linked Epic accounts for Steam–Epic PC play without repeatedly sharing IDs.
- Expect an Epic account on console for both hosting and joining.
- Do not expect console–PC play; those ecosystems are separate.
- Back up saves before Experimental builds, transfers, or major branch changes.
- Investigate firewall, NAT, and listed ports only after confirming the world is running and its privacy mode permits the chosen join method.
- Consider a dedicated server only when persistent availability while the host is offline is worth the additional setup and possible hosting cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Satisfactory with friends without a dedicated server?
Yes. One player can load a save as an online session, select Friends Only or Private, and invite friends or share the Session ID. The host must keep the session running.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I host Satisfactory for friends?
Load or start the world online, choose the privacy mode, then open Esc → Manage Session → Session Settings. Use the invitation controls or copy the Session ID for your friends.
How do I join a Satisfactory session by ID?
Ask the host to copy the current ID from Session Settings, open the multiplayer join screen, and enter it. The host must be online, and the session must be Friends Only rather than Private.
Can Steam and Epic play Satisfactory together?
Yes, on PC. Use a Session ID or link Epic accounts and add each other as Epic friends. Console and PC ecosystems remain separate.
Does the host have to be online?
Yes. A player-hosted world is available only while the host is running it. A dedicated server is needed for access while that host is offline.
Why can’t my friend join my Satisfactory game?
Confirm the host is in the world, check Friends Only versus Private, resend a fresh ID, and try an in-game invitation for Private sessions. Then set everyone’s Network Quality to Ultra, restart, test another host or fresh save, and check firewall, NAT, and the documented ports.
Do console players need an Epic Games account?
Yes. An Epic Games account is required to host or join console multiplayer because the console version uses Epic Online Services.
Can a console join my PC session or a dedicated server?
No. The official platform boundaries keep console and PC multiplayer separate, and consoles cannot join dedicated servers.
Where are Satisfactory saves stored?
On Windows, the support path is %LOCALAPPDATA%FactoryGameSavedSaveGames. Copy saves to another location, especially when cloud saves or Experimental builds are involved.
The Bottom Line
You do not need a dedicated server for normal Satisfactory co-op. Load the save as a Friends Only or Private online session, invite the group or share the current Session ID, and keep the host online. Use linked Epic accounts for Steam–Epic PC play, remember that consoles require Epic accounts and cannot join PC sessions or dedicated servers, and back up the save before branch changes or hosting transfers. Choose a dedicated server only when the factory must stay available without the original host.
