Every player needs access to the same current game branch and an Epic Online Services account. Coffee Stain Studios states on its official support page: “However, an Epic Games account is needed to host or join Multiplayer sessions, as we use EOS backend for multiplayer and cross-play.” You can create or connect that account from the game’s Online Settings menu if you do not already have one.
Account and version checklist
- Launch the same current branch of Satisfactory on every computer or console.
- Sign in to Epic Online Services from Online Settings. A Steam login by itself does not replace the Epic account required for multiplayer.
- Decide which player will own the shared save. In a normal session, that player is the host whenever the group wants to use that world.
- For Steam/Epic play, link each player’s Epic account and add the other players as Epic friends before trying to join.

How to start a normal multiplayer session
A normal session uses one player’s game as the active world. The host must be online while friends use that world, so choose the save belonging to the person who is most often available.
Host: create or load the world
- Launch Satisfactory and complete the Epic Online Services sign-in from Online Settings.
- Choose New Game to create a campaign or select Load Game to open an existing save.
- Start the world as an online multiplayer session. Review the session privacy option before inviting anyone; privacy controls who can discover or access the session.
- Remain in the world and tell friends to open Join Game. You can also invite them through the available friend interface when your platform and account connections expose that option.
- If discovery fails, open Manage Session > Session Settings, copy the session’s Session ID, and send it to the intended players.
Starting an existing save as an online session keeps the group’s work in that save. Before building, make sure everyone understands which save is authoritative; opening a different copy later can split construction and progression.

- Launch the same game branch and sign in to Epic Online Services.
- Open the main menu and select Join Game.
- Look for the host’s session in the list, checking the displayed account or session details so you choose the intended world.
- Select the session and join. If it is not listed, confirm the Epic friendship and privacy checks in the troubleshooting section below.
- Use the host’s Session ID only when normal discovery is not working. Enter or follow the game’s Session ID join flow exactly as presented by the current build.
The host’s computer or console must stay online for this type of session. Closing the game, losing the connection, or switching to another save ends access until the host starts that world again.
How Steam and Epic players cross-play
Steam/Epic cross-play is provided through Epic Online Services. Coffee Stain’s Steam announcement describes an Epic Online Services update that enabled cross-play between Steam and Epic and improved friend-list visibility. The account steps are therefore part of the connection process, not an optional social feature.
Set up cross-play before launching the world
- Each player opens Online Settings and links the Epic account associated with their game session.
- Use Epic’s friend system to add every person who should join. Accept pending requests on the account that will host and on each joining account.
- Restart the game if a newly linked account or newly accepted friend does not appear in the in-game list. This refreshes the session view without changing the save.
- The host starts an online session. Joining players select it from Join Game.
Buying the game from different PC storefronts does not by itself prevent cooperation. The important requirements are the Epic account connection, the Epic friend relationship, and a session whose privacy settings permit those players.

What cross-play does not solve
- It does not make the host’s world persistent when the host is offline; use a dedicated server for that requirement.
- It does not merge separate saves automatically. The group still needs one agreed campaign save.
- It does not bridge the PC and console ecosystems described as separate in Coffee Stain’s support answer.
What multiplayer progression is shared
The official Satisfactory wiki identifies shared multiplayer progression for the HUB, MAM, Space Elevator, and AWESOME Shop. These are group-level milestones in the shared world rather than four independent progress tracks for each participant.

Choose one campaign save
Agree on the campaign save before anyone spends time constructing a long-term factory. If one player loads an older copy while another continues the current host save, the game will not combine the two histories into a single progression line. Keep the host save backed up using the game’s normal save-management tools, and communicate when the active world changes.
Coordinate shared milestones
- Decide who will trigger the next HUB or Space Elevator objective so resources are not consumed twice.
- Use the MAM and AWESOME Shop as shared planning targets; record who is researching or unlocking an item in voice or text chat.
- When a player joins late, explain the current factory layout and unlocked milestones before assigning construction work.
These habits prevent duplicated work and confusion when several people are contributing to one world. They are organizational practices, not additional account requirements.
When a dedicated server is the better choice
A dedicated server keeps a multiplayer world available while individual players are offline, provided the server itself remains running. The Epic Games Store describes the Satisfactory Dedicated Server as a free tool for continuing to build while friends are away. The official wiki describes dedicated servers as PC-only and joinable while the server process is running.

Choose hosted play when

Choose a dedicated server when
- Players live in different time zones or play on irregular schedules.
- The factory should remain available for short building sessions throughout the day.
- A PC player can operate and update the server reliably.
- The group accepts responsibility for backups, access control, and keeping the server process online.
Search for a service category such as Satisfactory dedicated server hosting if you do not want to run the machine yourself. The cited material does not establish a particular provider, price, performance level, or included support package, so compare those details separately before paying.

Dedicated-server requirements
The Epic Games Store listing gives the following Windows requirements for the dedicated-server tool. They are store-listing specifications, not a guarantee of performance for every world size or player workload, and they should be rechecked after major game updates.

Install the server on a machine that can remain powered on and connected for the hours your group expects to play. Keep enough free storage for saves, logs, and future updates even though the listing specifies 20 GB. Apply the same game-version updates to the server and clients; a mismatch can prevent connections after a patch.
Operational checklist
- Use a Windows 64-bit PC that meets at least the published minimum; the recommended specification gives more headroom.
- Keep the dedicated-server process running whenever players need access.
- Maintain a backup routine for the shared world before major updates or large construction changes.
- Give the Session ID or other current connection information only to intended players.
- Plan who will install updates and restart the process if the server becomes unavailable.
Why a session may not appear in Join Game
Missing sessions are usually an account, friendship, privacy, or visibility problem rather than a requirement to reinstall the game. Work through these checks in order.
1. Confirm Epic Online Services sign-in
Have both the host and the joining player open Online Settings and verify that an Epic account is connected. If an account was just created or linked, close and relaunch the game before checking Join Game again.
2. Verify the Epic friend relationship
For Steam/Epic cross-play, confirm that both players have accepted one another as Epic friends. A platform friend list that does not include the Epic relationship may not be enough for cross-play discovery.

3. Check session privacy
The host should open Manage Session > Session Settings and confirm that the privacy setting allows the intended players. A private or restricted session can be running normally while remaining absent from another player’s list.
4. Check profile visibility
Review account profile and privacy visibility if the friend list or session is not exposed to the other player. The host and joining player should both use settings that permit the required friend and session information to be displayed.
5. Share the Session ID
When discovery still fails, the host can copy the Session ID from Manage Session > Session Settings. The official wiki notes that access to the ID is governed by the session’s privacy setting, so sharing the ID does not bypass a deliberate privacy restriction.
6. Check branch and server state
Make sure every client is on the same current branch. For dedicated servers, verify that the server process is running and updated to a compatible version. A stopped server cannot accept joins even if its previous Session ID was valid.
Console multiplayer and PC limits
Coffee Stain’s cited support material says PlayStation and Xbox cross-play is available and that Epic accounts are required for console multiplayer. The same support answer keeps PC and console ecosystems separate. Therefore:
- A PlayStation player and an Xbox player can plan a console cross-play session under the stated account requirements.
- A Steam or Epic PC player should not expect to join that console session.
- A console player should not be promised access to a PC-hosted world or a PC dedicated server based on the cited support information.
Because platform policies and game branches can change, check a new official Coffee Stain announcement before organizing a mixed-platform purchase or campaign.

Practical setups for different groups
Two or three friends who play together weekly
Use a normal hosted session. Pick one host, connect every Epic account before the first play night, and keep the campaign save on that host’s system. At the start of each session, the host loads the agreed save and the others select it from Join Game.
Friends who play at different times
Use a PC dedicated server or accept that the host must launch the world whenever someone wants to build. A dedicated server removes the host-online dependency but adds hardware, update, backup, and access-management responsibilities.
Steam and Epic players starting a new factory
Complete Epic account linking and friendship setup before creating the save. This avoids spending the first session troubleshooting an invisible friend list and makes it clear which player owns the initial campaign.
Console-only group
Use the console multiplayer path with Epic accounts and confirm that each player is on a supported console platform. Do not include a PC player unless a newer official support statement explicitly adds PC-to-console play.
