What controls the number of Pals at a base?
BaseCampWorkerMaxNum sets the maximum number of worker Pals assigned to one base. It is the setting you need when players ask why they cannot deploy more than 15 workers at a base.

The setting applies per base, not to a player’s entire Palbox and not to every Pal a guild owns. A player can still own or store more Pals than this limit; the value controls how many can operate in one camp at the same time.

Changing the guild-base limit or player limit will not add worker slots to an individual camp. Those are separate options in the same configuration line.

Current default and maximum
The shipped configuration uses BaseCampWorkerMaxNum=15, according to the PalDB extraction from Palworld build 4570950001 on September 15, 2026. Pocketpair’s current Palworld Server Guide lists 50 as the maximum number of Pals per base. Set a value from 1 through 50; values above the documented cap are not a supported way to obtain additional worker slots.

The 20 and 30 examples are configuration choices, not hardware-tested performance tiers. There is no published benchmark that says a particular CPU, memory amount, tick rate, or number of bases makes one of these values universally safe.
Find the active PalWorldSettings.ini file
Dedicated servers have a default template and an active configuration. Edit the active file; changing the template alone does not change a running world.
Linux dedicated server
The active file is:

steamapps/common/PalServer/DefaultPalWorldSettings.inito the appropriate Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini or Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini destination. The official guide specifically directs administrators to edit the resulting active PalWorldSettings.ini, not DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini.
Step-by-step: raise the worker-Pal limit
- Stop the dedicated server. Do not edit the file while the server process is writing its settings. Shut it down through your service manager, control panel, or normal server stop procedure.
- Open the active configuration. Use the LinuxServer path on Linux or the WindowsServer path on Windows. If it does not exist, create it by copying the default template as described above.
- Locate the single
OptionSettings=(...)line. PalWorldSettings.ini stores the options in this line rather than as one setting per line. - Find the worker setting. Search for
BaseCampWorkerMaxNum=15. Your file may already contain another number if an administrator changed it previously. - Replace only the number. For example, to allow 30 workers, change the entry to
BaseCampWorkerMaxNum=30. Keep the key name, commas, parentheses, quotation marks, and every other option intact. - Save the file. Check that the filename remains
PalWorldSettings.ini, not a text-editor variant such asPalWorldSettings.ini.txt. - Start or restart the server. The dedicated server reads the setting during startup; changing the file while it is running will not reliably apply the new limit.
- Verify in the game. At a base, assign or deploy workers until the new limit is reached. Confirm that the server is using the expected save and configuration if the old limit remains.
How to edit the OptionSettings line safely
A typical entry looks like this:
OptionSettings=(BaseCampWorkerMaxNum=15,...)The real line contains many additional options. Do not replace the whole line with a shortened example. Use your editor’s Find command, change the digits after BaseCampWorkerMaxNum=, and leave the surrounding text unchanged.

- Keep the spelling and capitalization exactly as
BaseCampWorkerMaxNum. - Do not add spaces or line breaks inside the
OptionSettings=(...)expression unless your existing file already uses them. - Do not delete commas separating neighboring options.
- Use a numeric value no higher than 50, the current documented maximum.
- Make a backup copy before editing so you can restore the previous configuration if the server fails to start.
Why increasing the limit can cause lag
Pocketpair’s official documentation warns: “Increasing this value raises processing load.” Every additional worker can add simulation and task-processing work at a base. PalDB also identifies a higher worker limit as a common cause of base-camp lag.
The impact depends on what those Pals are doing, how complex the base is, how many bases are active at once, and how many players are present. A server with several highly automated bases can experience more load than one small camp with idle workers, even when both use the same configured limit.

A cautious increase strategy
- Record the current value and make a backup of the active file.
- Raise the limit in a small step, such as from 15 to 20, rather than immediately selecting 50.
- Restart the server and let the normal player population use the affected bases.
- Watch CPU usage, memory usage, server tick behavior, and player reports after the restart.
- If the server remains responsive, consider another measured increase. If lag appears, return to the last stable value.
No official source provides a universal hardware requirement or a guaranteed safe value. Treat 50 as a configuration ceiling, not a promise that every server can run 50 workers at every base without performance loss.
Choosing a practical target
Start with the number of workers your bases actually need. If 15 is only slightly restrictive, 20 may provide the extra production slots without adding as much work as a jump to 50. If a base is deliberately designed around many production, farming, transport, or breeding assignments, a higher value may be useful, but the resulting load must be observed on your own server.
- 15: Keep the shipped default when bases already run smoothly and the extra slots are not essential.
- 20: A small expansion for a busy base; evaluate CPU, memory, tick behavior, and player feedback after restarting.
- 30: A substantial expansion; use it only when the base layout and server workload justify additional concurrent workers.
- 50: The current documented cap; reserve it for servers that remain stable under the added processing load.
These choices do not change the number of bases a guild can own. If the real problem is that players need another camp, review BaseCampMaxNumInGuild instead.
Troubleshooting when the limit stays at 15
The wrong file was edited
Confirm that the change is in Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini or Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini. Editing DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini does not apply a live server change.

The server was not restarted
Stop and start the dedicated server after saving. The setting is loaded at startup, so reconnecting without a restart may leave the old value active.

Check that the key reads exactly BaseCampWorkerMaxNum=number inside the existing OptionSettings=(...) expression. A missing comma, parenthesis, or accidental deletion elsewhere on the line can prevent options from loading correctly. Restore your backup and make the edit again if necessary.
The file was saved under the wrong name
Some editors append .txt when saving. Verify that the server sees a file named exactly PalWorldSettings.ini in the platform-specific directory.
The value is above the supported maximum
Use a value of 50 or less. The official guide currently identifies 50 as the maximum per base; exceeding it is not a supported method for adding workers.
The wrong world or server instance was started
If the file is correct and the server was restarted, verify that your launcher or service points to the same PalServer installation you edited. Multiple installations can have separate configuration directories and saves.

Rolling back a change
Stop the server, restore the backup of PalWorldSettings.ini, and start the server again. If you did not create a backup, edit the active file and set BaseCampWorkerMaxNum back to 15, the shipped default reported by PalDB. Removing workers from a base after a reduction may require reorganizing assignments in-game; changing the limit does not create a new base or erase the Palbox.
Managed hosting considerations
On a managed Palworld server, the same setting may be exposed through a configuration editor rather than direct filesystem access. Look for an advanced server-settings or configuration-file panel, edit BaseCampWorkerMaxNum, save, and use the host’s restart control. If the panel regenerates PalWorldSettings.ini, make the change through that panel so it is not overwritten on the next deployment. Ask the host which installation path and restart action correspond to the active instance before changing production settings.
Do not confuse worker slots with guild or player limits
If a guild can establish only a certain number of bases, increasing BaseCampWorkerMaxNum will not remove that restriction. Pocketpair’s current guide lists a default of four bases per guild and a maximum of 10 through BaseCampMaxNumInGuild. That is a separate limit from the number of workers inside each base.
Likewise, ServerPlayerMaxNum controls how many players can join the server. It has no effect on worker-Pal slots. Change it only when the issue is concurrent player capacity.

Bottom line for server administrators
Edit BaseCampWorkerMaxNum in the active platform-specific PalWorldSettings.ini, restart the server, and verify the result in a base. The normal shipped value is 15, while the current official documentation caps the setting at 50. Raise it gradually: more worker Pals also mean more processing load, and the sources provide no universal hardware guarantee for any value.
