You can play retro games on a CRT without a VHS tape or VCR: connect the console directly to a compatible input on the television. The right cable depends on the console’s video output and the CRT’s inputs, so check both before buying anything.
What you need for a direct connection
You need a console with a video output, a CRT with a matching input, and a cable designed for that console and signal. A VHS tape is not part of the connection. A VCR is optional, not required.

Start by inspecting the back and sides of the TV for labeled input sockets. Distinguish inputs from outputs, then check the console’s manual or its existing cable to identify the output type. Nintendo’s Wii setup instructions, for example, document composite AV, S-Video, and component connections; component is not supported by Wii mini. Nintendo’s Wii connection instructions explain those options.

- Identify the TV inputs. Look for labels and socket shapes on the back or side of the CRT. Do not assume a socket is an input just because it resembles a familiar connector.
- Identify the console’s output. Confirm the console model and its supported video connection. Choose a cable made for that console and signal; a cable that fits physically may still be electrically incompatible.
- Match the signal at both ends. Connect each plug to the corresponding TV input. Composite commonly uses yellow for video and red/white for audio. Component video uses green, blue, and red for Y/Pb/Pr video, plus red/white for audio. S-Video uses its own connector. Sony’s support pages illustrate component connections and composite connections.
- Select the input. Turn on the console, then use the TV or remote’s input/source control to choose the socket group you connected. The label may be named AV, Video, Component, or another input name shown on the TV.
If the plug types or labels do not match, pause and confirm the actual signal supported by each device before shopping for an adapter. An adapter that changes a plug’s shape does not necessarily convert one video signal into another. Check both manuals when the socket labels are unclear.

Which cable connection should you use?
| Connection | What must match | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Composite AV | The console must provide composite video and the CRT must have a composite input. | Often uses yellow for video and red/white for audio. Sony documents this wiring arrangement in its composite connection instructions. |
| S-Video | The console must provide S-Video and the CRT must have an S-Video input. | Nintendo documents S-Video as an option for Wii; confirm the cable and input are supported by your specific equipment. Nintendo’s Wii S-Video instructions. |
| Component | The console must provide component video and the CRT must have Y/Pb/Pr inputs. | A standard Wii uses a separately sold component cable; Wii mini supports only Wii AV cables. Check Nintendo’s Wii compatibility instructions before buying. |
| RGB/SCART | The console must output RGB in a format supported by the CRT’s RGB/SCART input. | Compatibility depends on console and region. Analogue’s connection guide describes analog connection formats; verify the manuals for your exact devices. |
There is no universal picture-quality ranking established for every console and CRT combination. First prioritize a connection supported by both devices, then choose based on the cable and setup available for your specific models.
Wii-specific example: component input
If you have a standard Wii and a CRT with component inputs, Nintendo documents a separately sold Wii component cable. Connect the red, green, and blue video plugs to the matching Y/Pb/Pr inputs, then connect the red and white audio plugs. This cable is not compatible with Wii mini, which Nintendo says is limited to Wii AV cables. Confirm the console model and the TV’s component inputs before buying.

Do you need a VCR?
No. A VCR can act as an intermediary only if it has suitable video and audio inputs and is connected to the TV, but a direct connection is simpler when the console and CRT have matching inputs. Nintendo warns that some DVR-equipped devices digitize the input signal with a delay of up to one second, which can make gameplay extremely difficult. Nintendo Support’s troubleshooting page describes this delay. Nintendo UK likewise advises checking the input sockets on both the TV and VCR before connecting them: Wii TV connection guidance.

- Connect Classic RCA Devices to HDMI Displays: Bring older AV equipment back into use by converting yellow, white and red composite RCA signals into HDMI output for newer TVs, monitors and projectors. Choose between 720P and 1080P output at 60Hz to match your display. Please note that this av to hdmi adapter is built specifically for connecting an RCA/AV source to an HDMI display; it cannot convert an HDMI source to RCA/AV.
- Complete 3-Cable Set Included: Includes separate RCA, HDMI and Micro USB cables for video/audio connection, HDMI output and power. The RCA and HDMI cables are detachable for flexible placement and use with compatible equipment. USB power is required for operation. - HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.
If you get no picture or sound
- Check that the cable is connected to TV inputs, not output sockets.
- Confirm the TV is set to the input used by the console.
- Verify that the console’s output type matches the CRT’s input; matching connector shapes alone do not prove signal compatibility.
- For component, ensure the video plugs are in the matching Y/Pb/Pr inputs and the separate red/white audio plugs are connected.
- For a Wii component setup, confirm it is a standard Wii rather than Wii mini.
