To check a crypto address against the U.S. Treasury’s OFAC sanctions lists, search the full address in the ID # field of OFAC’s official Sanctions List Search. Address searches return exact matches only. If nothing appears, that means only that the address did not match a listed address in that search; OFAC says its digital-currency address listings are not likely to be exhaustive.
Search an address in OFAC’s official tool
- Open OFAC Sanctions List Search.
- Paste the full crypto address into the ID # field and run the search. OFAC FAQ 594 specifically directs users to search a digital-currency address in this field. The address must match exactly; the field does not use fuzzy matching for addresses. See OFAC FAQ 594.
- If a result appears, open and inspect the record. Check that the address string matches and note the currency identifier, associated entity, and sanctions program information. OFAC uses labels such as “Digital Currency Address – XBT” and “Digital Currency Address – ETH”; its FAQ also gives examples for other currencies, but those examples do not establish current coverage of every chain. See OFAC FAQ 562.
- Record what the search actually establishes: whether that exact address returned a result in the official search at that time. Do not describe a no-result as proof that the address is safe or has no sanctions connection.
What a match—or no match—means
An exact match is a reason to investigate, not a complete legal answer
A matching address entry identifies a digital-currency address associated with a listed party; it does not, by itself, resolve the transaction or all relevant facts. Review the record’s entity and program details and seek appropriate compliance or legal guidance before acting. OFAC cautions that its search tool is not a substitute for appropriate due diligence. Its Sanctions List Search page explains the tool’s limited role.

No result does not establish that an address is unconnected to sanctions
OFAC explicitly says its digital-currency address listings “are not likely to be exhaustive.” A listed-address search therefore cannot establish ownership, control, indirect exposure, or whether a particular transaction is permissible. It only reports whether the entered string exactly matched an address in the searched data. See OFAC FAQ 562.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn address is not the whole wallet or identity
OFAC describes a digital-currency address as an alphanumeric identifier representing a potential destination for a transfer and associated with a wallet. An address lookup is not a general identity check or a complete assessment of activity tied to a wallet. The FAQ describes listed addresses as unique identifiers of up to 256 characters and says entries identify the currency.

Why exact matching matters
OFAC FAQ 594 says the ID # field does not use fuzzy logic for digital-currency address searches, so only exact matches are returned. OFAC FAQ 246 explains that fuzzy logic applies to the name field, while other fields use character matching. That means a typo, omitted character, or different address will not be surfaced as a near match. See FAQ 594 and FAQ 246.
Do not confuse an exact address search with broader screening. Sanctions exposure may involve a person or entity, indirect relationships, or transaction context that an address-only search does not assess.

One-off lookup versus ongoing screening
| One-time manual lookup | Broader screening process |
|---|---|
| Search one address in the ID # field; the address comparison is exact. | Download OFAC lists in supported formats and use them in a repeatable screening workflow. |
| Answers whether that string appears as a listed address in the search at that time. | Can incorporate customer information, transactions, and re-screening as lists change. |
| Requires a person to inspect any result and its associated entity and program details. | Requires an organization to define a risk-based process appropriate to its activity and keep screening data current. |
OFAC provides downloadable versions of its SDN List and other sanctions lists for screening. For virtual-currency businesses, its Sanctions Compliance Guidance for the Virtual Currency Industry discusses customer-information screening, transaction screening, and ongoing sanctions screening. The guidance supports a risk-based approach; it does not endorse a particular screening provider.

What to do if a possible hit involves funds
For U.S. persons, OFAC states that if they determine they hold virtual currency required to be blocked, they must deny all parties access to it and meet the requirements for holding and reporting blocked assets. A possible match is not a substitute for determining the facts and applicable obligations. Consult qualified sanctions counsel or compliance personnel rather than treating this article or a search result as a legal determination. See OFAC guidance on virtual currency blocking.

Check the live list and understand the jurisdiction
Sanctions data can change, so use the live OFAC search or current downloadable lists when screening. The search page’s displayed update dates are time-sensitive; verify them directly rather than relying on a date captured earlier. This process addresses U.S. OFAC lists only and does not establish the applicable rules or lookup method in another jurisdiction.
