What you need to play PSP games on a PC
- PPSSPP: the PSP emulator used in this guide.
- A compatible game file: for example, an ISO, CSO, or CHD image, or a supported digital game file copied from a PSP you own.
- A PC and current graphics drivers: the emulator’s broad hardware guidance is encouraging, but performance varies by computer, game, and settings.
PPSSPP does not need a separate PSP BIOS download. Its FAQ explains that it simulates the BIOS and internal operating system; it does not run the PSP’s XMB menu. Read the PPSSPP FAQ.

1. Download and install PPSSPP
Get PPSSPP from the official download page and choose the current build for your operating system. The official introduction lists a Windows installer or portable ZIP, a macOS DMG, and Linux Flatpak or AppImage options. Follow the download page’s current platform-specific instructions.

Choose the installer for a conventional installation, or the portable ZIP if you prefer to run PPSSPP from an extracted folder. Launch PPSSPP after installation or extraction.

Download the DMG, open it, and follow the installation steps shown for the current release.
Linux
Choose the Flatpak or AppImage option listed for your distribution. Follow the official download page for the current installation steps.

2. Get a PSP game file you can use
PPSSPP runs game files rather than reading a PSP disc directly from your PC. Its documentation covers ISO images and compressed disc formats such as CSO and CHD. It also describes copying digital games already on a real PSP and using the game’s EBOOT.PBP file. See PPSSPP’s instructions for using games.
Copying a digital game from a PSP
If a digital PSP game is already on your PSP, PPSSPP’s guide explains how to copy its game folder to your computer and open the EBOOT.PBP file. The steps and folder location depend on how the game is stored on the PSP; use the official guide rather than downloading a copy from an unknown site.

Making an image from a UMD you own
PPSSPP documents a UMD-dumping method that requires a PSP running custom firmware and a USB-Mini cable. In outline, insert the UMD, connect the PSP to the computer, select the UMD disc as the USB device in the custom firmware menu, enable USB Connection, then copy the virtual ISO file that appears on the computer.
That is a technical description, not a determination of copyright law. Whether copying or using a game image is lawful depends on the law and circumstances where you live. PPSSPP also points to free demos and homebrew as other ways to get games; avoid unauthorized game downloads.

3. Load the game in PPSSPP
- Open PPSSPP and select the Games tab.
- Navigate to the folder containing the game file. If needed, select the folder so PPSSPP can display its games.
- Choose the game to start it.
On Windows and macOS, you can also use File > Load to select a game file directly. If a game does not appear, check that you opened the correct folder and that the file is in a supported format.
4. Set up controls
You can play with the keyboard or connect a compatible gamepad. A controller is optional. PPSSPP supports many controllers; its FAQ notes Windows support for XInput and DirectInput, and its hardware page lists Xbox, PlayStation, and Logitech controller examples. If your controller is connected but does not respond as expected, open PPSSPP’s control settings and check or map its inputs. Button names and available options can vary by operating system and controller.
5. Start with default settings, then troubleshoot performance
PPSSPP says its default settings are generally fine for getting started. Update your graphics drivers, launch the game, and change graphics options only if you have a reason to. The FAQ says a reasonably modern CPU and a GPU capable of OpenGL 3.0 should work, and notes that Vulkan may help when available. These are broad developer guidelines, not a guarantee for every PC or game.
- The game is missing from the Games tab: navigate to the folder containing the game, or use File > Load on Windows or macOS. Confirm the file is a supported game format.
- The game runs poorly: check for current graphics drivers, then consult PPSSPP’s graphics settings guidance about graphics backends.
- You are prompted to find a BIOS: PPSSPP does not require a separate PSP BIOS file. Do not download one to complete this setup.
The hardware advice comes from PPSSPP’s recommended hardware page and FAQ. Actual results depend on the computer, drivers, game, and configuration.
