Nintendo’s documented compatibility features cover Nintendo Switch 2 software and compatible Nintendo Switch physical and digital games, not PlayStation software. If your goal is portable access to PS5 games, Sony’s PlayStation Portal is the officially documented option, but it is separate hardware and does not connect to or turn a Switch 2 into a PlayStation.
What a Nintendo Switch 2 is officially compatible with
Nintendo defines Switch 2 compatibility around Nintendo software. Its compatibility guidance says: “In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 consoles can be used to play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch console.” That covers games supplied on a Switch card and eligible digital purchases associated with a Nintendo account.

Some Nintendo Switch games receive a free update or a paid upgrade for Switch 2. Those updates can improve performance or add Switch 2-specific features, but they do not add support for software made for another console family. A PlayStation game disc, PlayStation digital license, or PlayStation account purchase is not converted into a Switch 2 game by inserting it, downloading it, or signing in.
Compatibility is checked one Nintendo title at a time
Even within Nintendo’s own catalog, “Switch game” does not mean guaranteed perfect operation. Nintendo publishes a current list of Switch games that start on Switch 2 but have in-game compatibility issues. Check that list for the exact Nintendo title before assuming that a particular game, accessory, or mode will work normally.

Why PlayStation games do not run natively on Switch 2
Native play means the game software executes on the console itself. Switch 2’s documented operating environment accepts Switch 2 software and compatible Nintendo Switch software; it does not provide a PlayStation runtime, PlayStation disc support, or a PlayStation digital storefront. There is therefore no supported installation path for a PS5, PS4, PS3, or original PlayStation game on Switch 2.
This is different from a game being available on both platforms. If a publisher releases a separate Nintendo Switch 2 version of a game that also exists on PlayStation, you can play that Nintendo version. You are not running the PlayStation edition, and a PlayStation purchase does not automatically grant the Nintendo edition.
Can you play PS5 games on Switch 2?
No, not as native Switch 2 software. A PS5 game can run on a PS5 and can be streamed through Sony-supported services to compatible Sony hardware, but Nintendo’s compatibility documentation does not list Switch 2 as a PlayStation streaming client or PlayStation platform.
Can you use PlayStation Remote Play on Switch 2?
No officially documented method lets the Switch 2 act as a PlayStation Remote Play device. Sony documents Remote Play through PlayStation Portal and compatible devices in its own ecosystem; it does not document a Switch 2 application, accessory mode, or browser procedure that turns the Nintendo console into a Portal.
Native play, Remote Play, and cloud streaming are different
These terms describe three different ways software may appear on a screen. Keeping them separate prevents a common misunderstanding about “playing PlayStation games on Switch 2.”
| Method | Where the game actually runs | Is a PS5 required? | Subscription requirement | Internet dependency | Does it make Switch 2 a PlayStation? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native Switch 2 play | On the Switch 2 | No | Not applicable | Only whatever the individual Nintendo game requires | No; only Switch 2 and compatible Switch software are in scope |
| Remote Play with PlayStation Portal | On a paired PS5; Portal receives the video and sends controls | Yes, for the documented PS5 Remote Play path | No separate PlayStation Plus requirement is stated for Remote Play itself | Required between the Portal and PS5 over Wi-Fi or broadband | No; Portal is separate Sony hardware |
| Cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal | On Sony’s cloud infrastructure | No console is required for the cloud session | Active PlayStation Plus Premium, plus a PlayStation account | Broadband is required; Sony publishes minimum speed thresholds | No; the feature is available on supported Portal hardware, not Switch 2 |
The table describes the documented Sony paths. It does not establish that every third-party streaming, emulation, or remote-desktop experiment is impossible; it does establish that none of those experiments is a Nintendo- or Sony-documented way to play PlayStation games on Switch 2.
PlayStation Portal: the official portable alternative
PlayStation Portal is a separate remote player designed for portable access to compatible PlayStation games. Sony documents two relevant uses: Remote Play from a PS5 and, where available, cloud streaming for selected games. Neither use installs PlayStation software on a Switch 2, and Portal is not a Switch 2 accessory.
Remote Play from a PS5
With Remote Play, the PS5 runs the game. Portal displays the PS5’s output and returns your control input over a network connection. Sony describes Portal as accessing compatible games installed on the PS5, including compatible PS5 and PS4 games. The source console for this documented function is a PS5; Sony’s compatibility documentation says Portal Remote Play is not compatible with a PS4 console as the source.

- Use a PS5 with the PlayStation games you want to play installed on it and sign in with the PlayStation account that owns or can access those games.
- Connect the PS5 and Portal to reliable broadband. The quality of the session depends on the connection between the console, Portal, and your home network or internet path.
- Sign in to Portal with the same PlayStation account associated with the PS5.
- Start the Portal Remote Play connection and select a compatible game installed on the PS5.
- Leave the PS5 available for Remote Play while you play. If the console is powered off, offline, or unable to reach the account, Portal cannot retrieve its game session.
The exact availability of a game can depend on its compatibility with Remote Play and on how it is licensed or installed on the PS5. A PlayStation title that is not eligible for the documented Remote Play path will not become eligible merely because Portal is connected.
Cloud streaming on Portal
Cloud streaming is a different service. The game runs on Sony’s servers rather than on your PS5, so a PS5 is not required for the cloud session. Sony requires all of the following:

- A PlayStation account.
- Broadband internet access.
- An active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
- A game included in the set of titles supported for Portal cloud streaming in your country or region.
Sony’s stated connection thresholds are technical minimums for the Portal cloud-streaming feature:
| Use case | Sony-stated minimum speed | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Establishing a cloud-streaming session | 5 Mbps | Minimum upload and download speed stated by Sony |
| 720p streaming | 7 Mbps | Minimum speed stated by Sony for 720p |
| 1080p streaming | 13 Mbps | Minimum speed stated by Sony for 1080p |
These figures are requirements published by Sony, not a guarantee of image quality, latency, or uninterrupted play. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss, distance from the router, and regional service conditions can still affect a session. Sony also says country availability and supported games vary. Its Portal cloud-streaming documentation lists PS3 and PS4 games as unavailable through this particular cloud-streaming feature, even though compatible PS4 games can be accessed through Remote Play from a PS5.
What you can and cannot transfer between the systems
Game purchases
A purchase made through PlayStation’s storefront remains a PlayStation entitlement. It does not appear in the Nintendo eShop, and signing into a PlayStation account on another device does not create a Switch 2 download. To play a game on Switch 2, you need a Nintendo release or a compatible Nintendo version purchased through Nintendo’s system.
Physical discs and cartridges
PlayStation discs are not Switch 2 game cards. The Switch 2 has no documented PlayStation disc compatibility layer, so inserting a PlayStation disc cannot launch its game. Conversely, a Nintendo game card is governed by Nintendo’s title-specific compatibility rules and cannot be used as a container for the PlayStation edition.
Save data
PlayStation saves and Nintendo saves belong to different platform ecosystems. A PlayStation save does not become a Switch 2 save simply because the same game has a Nintendo version. Any cross-save feature must be provided by the game’s publisher and supported separately on both platforms; it is not a general Switch 2 or PlayStation compatibility function.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you are checking a specific Nintendo Switch game
When the real question is whether a particular Nintendo title works on Switch 2, use Nintendo’s current compatibility material rather than assuming that every Switch release behaves identically.
- Identify the exact game, edition, and physical or digital format.
- Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information for that title.
- Look for notes about games that start but have in-game compatibility issues.
- Check whether Nintendo lists a free update or paid Switch 2 upgrade.
- Install the latest available system and game updates before troubleshooting.
- Test the modes and accessories you actually intend to use; a title may launch while a specific feature has a documented issue.
This process answers a Nintendo compatibility question. It does not provide a route for launching the PlayStation edition of the same game.

Why unofficial streaming or emulation claims need caution
Online posts may describe capture-card setups, browser streaming, modified software, emulators, or third-party remote-access tools. The official Nintendo and Sony material summarized here does not document one of those methods as a supported way to play PlayStation games on Switch 2, and no unofficial method has been established here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat distinction matters for reliability. An unsupported method may depend on a particular firmware version, require a separate computer or console, add noticeable control delay, break after an update, or violate a service’s terms. Downloads described as “PS5 emulators” or “one-click Switch 2 ports” can also expose an account or device to malware. Do not treat a video demonstration or an anonymous compatibility claim as equivalent to Nintendo or Sony support.
If you investigate any third-party solution independently, keep your expectations narrow: it would be an external workaround, not native PlayStation support, and its legality, security, maintenance, and performance would need separate verification. The documented answer remains that Switch 2 itself does not run PlayStation games.
Choose the setup that matches your goal
You want to play a Nintendo game while traveling
Buy or download the compatible Nintendo Switch version and verify its Switch 2 status. This is the only option in this guide that runs the game locally on Switch 2.
You already own a PS5 and want to play its library away from the television
PlayStation Portal Remote Play is the documented fit. The PS5 remains the host, the game must be installed and compatible, and both sides need a suitable network connection. Buying a Switch 2 will not replace the PS5 in this arrangement.
You want portable PlayStation play without owning a PS5
Check whether Portal cloud streaming is available in your region and whether the games you want are supported. You need Portal, a PlayStation account, broadband, and an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. The cloud catalog and geographic availability can change, so confirm eligibility before subscribing.
You want to use the hardware you already own
If the hardware is only a Switch 2, there is no documented PlayStation installation or Remote Play path for it. If you also have a PS5, compare the convenience of Portal Remote Play with the cost and requirements of cloud streaming rather than looking for a Switch 2 setting that does not exist.
Common misconceptions, corrected
- “A Switch 2 upgrade makes a PlayStation game compatible.” No. Nintendo upgrades apply to eligible Nintendo Switch games and do not convert PlayStation licenses.
- “Remote Play means the game is running on the handheld.” No. In the Portal Remote Play model, the paired PS5 runs the game and Portal receives the stream.
- “Cloud streaming is the same as Remote Play.” No. Cloud streaming uses Sony’s servers and requires PlayStation Plus Premium; Remote Play uses a paired PS5.
- “If a game has a PS4 version, Portal cloud streaming must support it.” No. Sony’s Portal cloud-streaming support page lists PS3 and PS4 games as unavailable through that feature, while compatible PS4 games may still be reachable through Remote Play from a PS5.
- “A browser or accessory turns Switch 2 into Portal.” Nintendo and Sony do not document that configuration.
Bottom line for PS5, PS4, and older PlayStation games
There is no officially documented way to install or run PlayStation games natively on Nintendo Switch 2. Switch 2 compatibility is for Switch 2 games and compatible Nintendo Switch games, with compatibility checked by title. For portable PlayStation access, use a separate PlayStation Portal with a PS5 through Remote Play, or use Portal cloud streaming where Sony supports it and where you meet the PlayStation Plus Premium, account, broadband, speed, regional, and game-eligibility requirements. Neither option makes PlayStation software run on the Switch 2 itself.
