You can play games from your PS4 or PS5 on a handheld screen using Sony’s free PS Remote Play app, or use a PlayStation Portal to stream compatible games from a PS5. Neither option runs PlayStation games independently: your console remains part of the setup. Sony requires an internet connection of at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps or more for a better experience.
Choose between the PS Remote Play app and PlayStation Portal
The app lets a compatible phone, tablet, computer, or other supported device connect to a PS4 or PS5. Portal is a dedicated handheld with built-in controls, but it streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5 and does not work with PS4.

Choose based on the console you own, the screen and controls you prefer, device compatibility, and whether you plan to connect over home Wi-Fi, mobile data, or public Wi-Fi. Sony’s published requirements do not establish that either option is faster or has lower latency in every setup.

Set up the PS Remote Play app
Remote Play streams the console’s gameplay and menus to your device. The console needs current system software, an internet connection, and the PlayStation account you use in the app.

- Check device compatibility. Review Sony’s PS Remote Play device and controller list for your phone or tablet, operating system, and controller. The supported combinations can differ by device and software version.
- Enable Remote Play on the console. On PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Remote Play. On PS4, enable it under Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings. Sony’s mobile setup guide covers console preparation.
- Allow remote startup if you want it. On PS5, open the Rest Mode features and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. On PS4, configure the relevant Rest Mode features and activate the console as your account’s primary PS4, as Sony’s guide directs. Without the appropriate settings, you may need to turn the console on manually.
- Install the app and sign in. Get PS Remote Play from the relevant app store, then sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console. Follow the in-app connection steps.
- Connect controls if needed. Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 support subject to device and operating-system conditions. Supported phones and tablets may also offer on-screen touch controls. Check the compatibility list for your exact setup.
- Check your connection. Sony says at least 5 Mbps is required and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those are service recommendations, not a promise of a particular image quality, frame rate, or response time.
Set up and use PlayStation Portal
Portal is a dedicated Remote Play device, not a standalone PlayStation. It streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5 and requires a PlayStation account and broadband Wi-Fi. See Sony’s U.S. Portal product information and compatibility guidance for current details.
Sony’s U.S. product guidance says supported Portal software can connect to a range of public Wi-Fi networks. Some networks require additional validation; initial setup on home Wi-Fi and a phone or tablet for validation may be needed. This guidance is specific to the U.S. page and supported software, so check local support if you intend to use Portal away from home.

Check which games and connections will work
Some games are not compatible with Remote Play
Sony excludes games that require a VR headset, titles that need peripherals beyond supported controllers, and games that must be streamed using PS Plus Premium. Portal likewise streams compatible PS5 games rather than every game or service available on the console. Check the game and device requirements before relying on Remote Play for a particular title.
Network speed is only one part of the experience
Sony’s guidance is at least 5 Mbps, with at least 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience. Actual performance varies with the game and network environment, and those figures do not guarantee a specific quality level. A connection that meets the stated speed may still perform differently depending on network conditions.

Mobile data uses your plan allowance
Remote Play over mobile data consumes data, and your carrier may charge if you exceed your plan’s allowance. The amount and any charges depend on your plan and provider; check those terms before playing away from Wi-Fi.
Can I play PS5 games on my phone?
Yes. With the PS Remote Play app, a compatible phone can stream games from your PS5. You need to enable Remote Play on the console, sign in to the app with the same PlayStation account, and use a supported controller or supported touch controls.
Does PlayStation Portal work with PS4?
No. Portal requires a PS5 and streams compatible games installed on that console. The PS Remote Play app, by contrast, supports compatible PS4 and PS5 consoles.
