For the simplest way to play an OGG audio file on Windows, Mac, iPhone, or Android, install VLC for your device and open the file in it. Windows also has a Microsoft codec-extension option, while recent versions of Safari can play certain OGG audio files. Compatibility depends on the audio codec inside the OGG file as well as the app and operating-system version.
What is an OGG file?
OGG is a container format: it packages media but does not, by itself, identify the audio codec inside. OGG files may contain Vorbis or Opus audio, for example, and a player must support the codec as well as the container. That is why one app may reject a file that another app can play.

How do I play an OGG file on Windows?
Option 1: Open it with VLC
Install VLC for Windows, then open the OGG file from within VLC or choose VLC as the app to open it. This is the direct choice if you want to avoid relying on Windows’ built-in format support.

Option 2: Add Microsoft’s Web Media Extension
If you want to keep using Microsoft’s media player, install the Web Media Extension from the Microsoft Store and try the file again. Microsoft says the extension adds support for the OGG container, Vorbis audio, and Theora video. Windows Media Player’s published supported-format list does not name OGG, so do not assume it will open on every Windows installation. Does Mac support OGG audio?
VLC for macOS is a straightforward option for opening a local OGG file. You can also use Safari for Ogg Vorbis or Opus audio if you have Safari 18.4 or later on macOS 15.4 or later, according to MDN’s media container format guide. This browser support does not establish that every Mac app, including Apple Music, can open OGG files.

Why won’t my iPhone play an OGG file?
Try VLC for iOS to open or import the file. Safari can play Vorbis and Opus in Ogg containers on Safari 18.4 or later with iOS 18.4 or later, as listed in MDN’s format guide. On older versions, or in other apps, use a compatible player instead of assuming the Music app supports OGG. Apple’s Media Player framework overview describes playback of items in a user’s media library; it does not establish general OGG file support.

VLC for Android is a practical choice for finding and playing a local OGG file. Android’s platform documentation lists Vorbis in Ogg among supported media formats, but individual devices may support additional formats and manufacturers or installed players can differ. Check Android’s supported media formats for the platform list.

What to try if an OGG file will not play
- Try VLC. If VLC plays the file, the problem is likely the default app’s format or codec support rather than the file itself.
- Check the download. Make sure it finished downloading and has a plausible
.oggextension. Renaming a file does not convert its audio or repair a damaged download. - On Windows, install the Web Media Extension if you prefer to use Microsoft’s media player.
- For browser playback on Mac or iPhone, check versions. The Safari support described above requires Safari 18.4 or later and macOS 15.4 or later, or iOS 18.4 or later, respectively.
- If multiple compatible players fail, replace or convert the file. Get an undamaged copy if possible; otherwise, use a reputable audio-conversion application. Conversion is a fallback, not a routine requirement for OGG playback.
