Does Half-Life: Alyx officially support playing without VR?
No. Valve describes Half-Life: Alyx as a game built from the ground up for virtual reality, and its Steam listing labels it “VR Only” and lists SteamVR in its minimum requirements. Valve’s examples of play include aiming by leaning, searching shelves by hand, manipulating tools to hack interfaces, and physically handling objects.

Valve does support seated and standing play, as well as roomscale. The game offers teleport, shift, and continuous analog-stick movement options. These are ways to play in VR; they do not provide a desktop mode.
How to try the community NoVR driver
The community project Half-Life: Alyx NoVR provides a SteamVR driver intended to let you play using a keyboard and mouse without wearing a headset. It is not made or endorsed by Valve. Its maintainers describe some sections as demanding, note that patience may be needed, and characterize the result as an unusual workaround rather than a standard flat-screen FPS.

The maintainer’s setup instructions describe a process that still relies on SteamVR software and driver configuration. Check the repository’s latest files and instructions before making changes; setup details and game-version behavior can change.
- Install SteamVR, as required by the project’s setup.
- Place the
hlalyxdriver folder in SteamVR’s drivers directory, following the repository’s current instructions. - Change resolution settings in the driver configuration and calibrate a SteamVR room as directed.
- Start SteamVR before launching Half-Life: Alyx, then adjust the game’s movement option as the instructions specify. The setup page describes smooth “Sliding” movement and an optional spectator mode.
This is not a universal, guaranteed install recipe. The driver documentation also notes that in recent game versions the camera may fail to rotate with the hands. Its README provides per-section instructions and suggests console commands or supplied saves for difficult passages. It also covers issues including red screens, calibration, window focus, resolution, controls, and spectator view.

What to expect from the workaround
- Less headset dependence, more tinkering: The project aims to let you play without wearing a headset, but it still calls for SteamVR, driver installation, and configuration changes.
- Controls are a compromise: Valve designed puzzles, object handling, and combat around VR interactions. The driver maps play to keyboard and mouse, and its documentation describes difficult moments and workarounds.
- Compatibility is not assured: Instructions and behavior can vary with game versions. Consult the project’s current documentation if a step or interaction does not work as expected.

If you want the story and are comfortable troubleshooting an unofficial workaround, the NoVR driver is an option to investigate. If you want the interactions as Valve designed them, use compatible SteamVR hardware and the supported VR experience.

Check system requirements before installing
Valve’s Steam listing gives these minimum requirements for Windows: Windows 10, an Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor, 12 GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD RX 580 with 6 GB of VRAM; SteamVR is also listed. Requirements can change, so check the current listing before purchase or installation.
