Install it through the PC storefront where you own the game, sign in to the linked Rockstar account for activation, then start Story Mode or GTA Online with mouse and keyboard or a controller. If you already play on PC, check the one-time progress migration rules before moving to Enhanced.
Should you play GTA 5 Enhanced or Legacy?
Rockstar renamed the previous PC release Legacy when it announced the free Enhanced upgrade for existing PC owners in February 2025. Enhanced is the feature-rich edition: Rockstar lists ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections, AMD FSR, NVIDIA DLSS, and faster loading with an SSD and DirectStorage on supported devices. Those features do not guarantee a particular frame rate or image quality on any specific PC. Rockstar Games Store’s current edition description identifies the supported features.

Rockstar Games Customer Support last updated these requirements on December 10, 2025. The storage figures describe the listed game storage requirement; leave additional free space for installation extraction and updates.

Rockstar warns that some mobile chipsets and integrated or AGP graphics cards may be incompatible, and that unlisted specifications may not be supported. Meeting the listed minimums is not a promise of a particular level of performance.
How to install and launch GTA 5 on PC
- Choose the edition. Compare your hardware with the table and select Enhanced or Legacy in the PC storefront where you own or plan to purchase the game.
- Install from the owning storefront. Use that storefront’s install flow; exact steps vary by purchase path. Make sure there is room beyond the listed game storage for extraction and updates.
- Sign in to the linked Rockstar account. Rockstar’s platform/account layer may be involved even when you install through another supported store. Use the account associated with the game license.
- Complete activation and launch. Internet access is required for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. Follow any prompts from the storefront or Rockstar launcher.
- Select an experience and input method. Start Story Mode for the single-player stories or GTA Online for the online experience. Use configurable mouse and keyboard controls or a plug-and-play controller.
Can you play Story Mode offline?
Generally, yes: Rockstar Support says Story Mode can be played without an internet connection, subject to setup and entitlement conditions. This does not remove the need for internet during activation or periodic entitlement verification. GTA Online, cloud-save syncing, and updates require a connection.

Mouse and keyboard or a controller?
Either works. Rockstar’s PC release supports configurable mouse and keyboard controls as well as plug-and-play controllers, so a gamepad is optional rather than a requirement. Choose the input style that suits you; a controller can be connected if you prefer playing with one.

Story Mode follows Franklin, Michael, and Trevor through Los Santos and Blaine County. GTA Online is a separate experience for online play. Choose Story Mode or Online from the game’s available options, depending on what you want to do first.

Rockstar’s February 27, 2025 announcement describes one-time migration paths from Legacy to Enhanced. Review the destination account and the progress you want to carry over before confirming: Story Mode progress cannot be copied back from Enhanced to Legacy, and GTA Online migration cannot be reversed.

Story Mode saves
You can upload a Story Mode save and migrate it to Enhanced once. The Legacy save remains playable, but progress made in Enhanced does not sync back into Legacy.

Online character migration is also a one-time transfer and does not delete Legacy progress. Rockstar says the migration includes characters, GTA$, progression, stats, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing, and player-created jobs. Profiles cannot be migrated from PlayStation or Xbox console families to PC.
