Some manufacturer instructions allow a diluted white-vinegar mixture for a specific stain on certain monitors, while other guidance recommends water or a mild soap solution instead. Check the instructions for your exact device before using vinegar; for routine dust and fingerprints, begin with a clean, soft microfiber or lint-free cloth.
What vinegar may do to a screen
The effect depends on the screen, its coatings, the vinegar mixture, and how it is applied. Manufacturer guidance supports using vinegar only in a narrow, device-specific situation; it does not establish that vinegar is safe for every phone, laptop, TV, or monitor, or that it will damage every screen. The available guidance also does not provide controlled tests showing how a particular vinegar concentration affects different coatings over time.

Acidic household substances warrant caution. Apple’s iPhone cleaning guidance says cleaning products and abrasive materials can diminish the screen’s oil-repellent coating or scratch glass, and advises cleaning promptly after contact with substances including acids or acidic foods. That warning is not a test of vinegar at a particular concentration, so it should not be treated as proof that vinegar always strips a coating or immediately damages a display.
When manufacturer guidance permits vinegar
Samsung’s US monitor-cleaning guidance says routine cleaning should use a soft microfiber cloth and distilled or still water. For a touch stain such as food, it says users can try a mixture of 50 percent distilled water and 50 percent white vinegar. That instruction is limited to the stated stain and monitors covered by that guidance; it is not a general recipe for phones, TVs, laptops, or other monitors.

Samsung’s Canadian monitor guidance differs: for tougher stains, it describes slightly warm distilled water or a very mild solution made with a drop of dish soap diluted in distilled water. It does not give the same vinegar instruction. The difference is a reason to check the current guidance for the specific model and region rather than assuming one manufacturer page applies everywhere.
What to use for ordinary dust and fingerprints
Start with a clean, soft microfiber or lint-free cloth. This is the common first step in guidance from Samsung, Apple, and Dell. Use light pressure and avoid repeated hard rubbing, which can abrade a surface or coating. If a dry cloth does not remove a mark, consult the device’s instructions before adding moisture.

How to clean a screen if its instructions allow liquid
- Check the exact device instructions. Look up the manufacturer’s current cleaning guidance for the model and, where relevant, your region. Instructions for one product line or country may not apply to another.
- Turn the device off if its instructions advise it. Keep liquid away from openings, seams, buttons, and ports.
- Apply permitted liquid to the cloth. Lightly dampen a soft, clean cloth and wring out excess moisture. Do not spray the screen directly. Liquid can run down the panel into the device; Dell specifically warns of corrosion risk from this, and Samsung and Apple also caution against direct spraying in their relevant guidance.
- Wipe gently and let the screen dry. Avoid abrasive materials and household cleaners unless the exact device instructions explicitly allow them.
Why a general vinegar recipe is unreliable
Displays differ in materials and surface treatments, and manufacturer directions are not interchangeable. Apple’s general cleaning guidance says products can use different materials and may have product-specific requirements; Dell’s advice applies to the monitor families listed on its page and notes that cleaners can change the screen’s appearance. The available manufacturer instructions do not justify ranking vinegar, alcohol, soap, or commercial cleaners as the safest choice for all screen types.

So, use vinegar only if the instructions for your exact screen permit it for the cleaning task at hand. Otherwise, stick to the recommended cloth and liquid—or contact the manufacturer if the guidance is unclear.
