To play a digital Xbox One or Xbox Series game on another console, sign in there with the Microsoft account that owns the game, then install it from that account’s library. If other people need to play on the second console without the owner signed in, make it the owner’s Home Xbox. These are two different license routes: one follows the account, while the other is assigned to the Home console.
Play your digital game on another Xbox One or Xbox Series console
- Connect the other console to the internet and sign in with the Microsoft account that purchased or redeemed the game.
- Open the account’s owned-games library, find the title and install it. Microsoft allows access to Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games on a reasonable number of compatible consoles.
- Launch the game while signed in as the owner. The account license lets that account play on a console that is not its Home Xbox.
The same game can run on only one console at a time. If you want to play on the second console while someone else plays on your Home Xbox, Microsoft says the Home console can run the game with a different user signed in there, while you use your owner account on the other console. When to set the other console as your Home Xbox
Use Home Xbox when other people using that console need access to eligible games licensed to the device without signing in as the purchaser. The Home setting assigns device licenses to that console; it does not transfer ownership of the game to another Microsoft account. It is also the device-license route for offline play, though Microsoft notes that some content may still require an online connection or license refresh.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- On the console, sign in with the account that owns the games.
- Open Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox.
- Select the option to make the console your Home Xbox and follow the on-screen prompts.
Microsoft Support’s current rules allow up to five Home Xbox changes during a rolling one-year period. Changing it moves the device licenses to the new Home Xbox, where they operate. Check your recent changes before switching, especially if you may need another change soon.

Choose the right method for your situation
| Situation | What to do | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You are playing on another Xbox One or Xbox Series console | Sign in with the account that owns the game and install it from the library | The same game can run on only one console at a time. Microsoft Support |
| Other users need to play on a console without the owner signed in | Set that console as the owner’s Home Xbox | Home Xbox changes are limited to five in a rolling one-year period; device licenses move to the new Home Xbox. Microsoft Support |
| You have an Xbox 360 digital game and another Xbox 360 | Move or copy the content as needed, then sign in with the account associated with the license | Copying the game does not move the license. Microsoft Support |
| You want to play on a Windows PC as well | Check whether the digital game supports Xbox Play Anywhere | Only participating games qualify, and the same game can run on one device at a time. Microsoft Support |
| You own a physical disc | Use the disc, or check whether it qualifies for Microsoft’s disc-to-digital entitlement | Not every disc qualifies; the qualifying disc must remain in your possession. Microsoft Support; Xbox Wire |
If the game is an Xbox 360 download
On another Xbox 360, transferring the game files to the console does not by itself grant the license. Sign in on the destination console with the Microsoft account associated with the game to play it. For a Series or Xbox One console, first confirm that the specific 360 title is backward compatible; a digital license does not make every older game run on newer hardware.
Playing on Windows with Xbox Play Anywhere
Xbox Play Anywhere applies only to participating digital titles. For an eligible game, you can play on a compatible Xbox and Windows device, with progress saved to your gamertag. Check the individual game’s Play Anywhere status and its PC system requirements. The entitlement does not allow the same game to run simultaneously on both devices.

Digital games, discs and the disc-to-digital feature
A standard disc-based game still requires its qualifying disc under the disc license. In an Xbox Wire announcement dated August 26, 2026, Xbox Vice President, Next Generation Jason Ronald described a feature that lets players claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. Microsoft’s current usage rules qualify that entitlement: only supported discs are eligible, the disc must remain in your possession, and Microsoft may revalidate or revoke the entitlement if you no longer possess it. This is not a blanket conversion of every physical game. See Ronald’s Xbox Wire announcement and Microsoft’s current usage rules.
If access does not work
- Confirm that you signed in with the Microsoft account that bought or redeemed the game.
- Check that the game is available for, and compatible with, the destination console generation.
- If you are on Xbox 360, sign in with the account linked to the license; moving the files alone is not enough.
- If another console is already running the same game, close that session before starting it on the destination console.
- If you rely on Home Xbox for offline play, reconnect when prompted to refresh a license; some content may require an online connection.
These licensing details reflect Microsoft’s English-language US policy pages as accessed October 4, 2026. Availability and compatibility can vary by region and by title.
