The reliable way to play Cobblemon with friends is to run a Minecraft Java Edition server with the Fabric loader, Cobblemon, and its required library, then install the identical modpack and Cobblemon version on every player’s computer. You can rent a managed server, run the official server pack on your own machine, or add the mods to an existing Fabric server. The server and every client must use the same Minecraft, loader, and Cobblemon versions.

What a private Cobblemon server is
Cobblemon is a Pokémon-style creature mod for Minecraft Java Edition. It is not a Bedrock Edition add-on, so players using consoles, phones, or Minecraft Bedrock cannot join this setup. A private server is simply a Minecraft server restricted to your group, rather than a public server anyone can discover and enter.

For the setup covered here, the server runs Fabric, the Cobblemon mod, and the library files required by that Cobblemon release. Each friend runs the matching client modpack. A server running one Cobblemon build cannot safely be mixed with clients running another build, even when both builds target Minecraft 1.21.1.
Cobblemon does not operate one official multiplayer server. The modpack can connect to community-run servers, and public listings are referenced through the Cobblemon website and its Discord server’s #server-listings channel. That is separate from creating a private world for your own group.

For a first server, managed hosting is usually the shortest path. Self-hosting avoids a hosting bill but takes more networking work. Manual installation only makes sense when you already understand the existing server’s Java, Fabric, backup, and world-management process.
Check compatibility before installing anything
Minecraft and loader
Current Cobblemon packs in the available listings target Minecraft 1.21.x; the Fabric instructions here use Minecraft 1.21.1. Fabric and NeoForge are different loaders. Cobblemon has a NeoForge build as well, but a Fabric server must use Fabric files and Fabric clients. Do not install a NeoForge mod on a Fabric server or ask one friend to use a different loader.

Java 21
Use Java 21 for current 1.21.x packs. On the computer that will run the server, open a terminal or command prompt and run:
java -versionThe output should identify Java 21. Older Java versions can cause the server to crash during startup even when the mod files are correct. If more than one Java installation is present, make sure the server’s start script points to the Java 21 executable rather than an older system default.

Memory planning
RAM figures in setup guides vary, so treat them as starting points rather than guarantees. The following estimates combine the ranges reported for small and larger groups:

These are rough allocations, not measured performance guarantees. Leave memory for the operating system and other services on a self-hosted machine. If the server repeatedly pauses, runs out of memory, or takes a long time to generate terrain, stop it, increase the allocation, and check that Java 21 is being used.

Resolve the Cobblemon version before creating the server
Version labels are changing quickly. The CurseForge mod listing shows Cobblemon 1.8.2 for Fabric with a Minecraft 1.21.1 build dated October 11, 2026. Its modpack page shows Cobblemon Modpack [Fabric] 1.8.2 server files dated October 14, 2026. A Modrinth listing visible in the same period shows 1.8.0 for 1.21.1 Fabric, published September 6, 2026. One older guide calls 1.8.1, released September 12, 2026, the latest, and one host page still displays 1.8.1.
Those entries do not establish one universal latest version. Before downloading, check the current Cobblemon and modpack listings on the source you intend to use, and check the official Cobblemon website or Discord for a current build announcement. Pick one exact release and use that same release everywhere. Do not combine a 1.8.2 server with a 1.8.0 client simply because both support 1.21.1.

Option 1: Set up a managed private server
A managed server is the easiest route because the provider supplies the machine, startup process, and network address. Menu names differ, but the workflow is generally the same.
- Choose Fabric support. In the provider’s software or game-type selector, choose a Fabric server rather than vanilla, Forge, or NeoForge.
- Select the modpack. In the modpack installer, find Cobblemon Official Modpack [Fabric] from CurseForge. Select the exact release you chose during the compatibility check, including Minecraft 1.21.1 where applicable.
- Install and start. Let the panel finish downloading the server files, then start the server. The first start may take longer while files and the world are created.
- Keep existing files unless you intend to erase them. Leave any Wipe Server Files option off. Enabling it deletes the server’s existing files and world; use it only when deliberately starting over and after making any backup you need.
- Copy the address. The panel will show a server address, often including a port. Copy it exactly; a missing port or extra character prevents a connection.
- Give friends the client instructions. Every player installs the matching Fabric Cobblemon modpack in the CurseForge or Modrinth app before joining.
If the panel offers a whitelist control, enable it for a friends-only server and add each player’s Minecraft username. This prevents someone who discovers the address from entering without approval. Keep the address private even with a whitelist enabled.

Self-hosting runs the server on a computer you control. It is suitable when one person can leave that computer powered on and has access to the home router.
Download the server pack
- Open the CurseForge app and locate the Cobblemon official Fabric modpack.
- Use the Download server pack icon next to Install. Choose the same Cobblemon and Minecraft release you intend to use on clients.
- Extract the downloaded server pack into a dedicated folder with a simple path, such as a folder created specifically for this server. Do not mix it with a different Minecraft server’s files.
Run the included startup process
- Confirm Java 21 with
java -version. - Run the start script included in the server pack for your operating system. The script installs or prepares Fabric and the required mods supplied with the pack.
- The first run normally creates the server files and an EULA file, then stops or pauses because the EULA has not been accepted.
- Open the EULA file and change
eula=falsetoeula=true. Save the file without changing the spelling or punctuation. - Run the same start script again and wait for the console to report that the server is ready. Keep that window open while friends play.
Do not launch the server with an older Java executable just because it is the default on the computer. If the process still exits, read the first error in the console and verify Java 21, the selected Fabric version, and the Cobblemon files before changing memory settings.

Make it reachable from the internet
Players on the same home network may be able to use the host computer’s local address. Friends outside that network need router port forwarding to the computer running the server. Create a forwarding rule for the server port shown in the server configuration, direct it to the host computer’s local network address, and allow the server through the operating system firewall when prompted. Test from outside the home network, such as with a friend’s connection; testing only from the host computer can give a misleading result.
Share the public address and port with trusted friends, not the local address. If your internet provider changes the public address periodically, you may need to send the new address to the group. The server computer must remain powered on, connected, and running the start script for others to join.

Use this method only when the existing server already runs the correct Minecraft and Fabric versions.
- Stop the server completely and make a backup of its world and configuration.
- Download the matching Fabric API and Cobblemon files for the server’s Minecraft version.
- Upload both files to the server’s
modsfolder. Keep the files in the folder itself, not inside an extra directory created during extraction. - Start the server and read the log for missing dependencies or loader errors.
- Have every player install the same Cobblemon release and matching Fabric API on the client.
Adding Cobblemon to an established world can leave previously generated terrain without the mod’s expected generation. A new world is recommended when adding Cobblemon. If you keep the old world, make a verified backup first and understand that unexplored areas may behave differently from areas already generated.
Install the matching client pack for every friend
- Install either the CurseForge app or the Modrinth app.
- Find the Cobblemon pack that matches the server: same Minecraft version, same loader, and same Cobblemon release.
- Install the pack rather than assembling individual mods by hand. The app handles the associated Fabric version and reduces the chance of a missing library.
- Launch the resulting Minecraft Java Edition profile once. Close it after the main menu appears so the launcher finishes creating its files.
- Repeat the process for each friend. Everyone should compare the displayed modpack and Cobblemon versions before attempting to connect.
Do not add a random newer Cobblemon jar to an otherwise older pack. If a friend receives a mismatch message, remove the mismatched profile or select the server’s exact release instead of trying several versions at random.

Join the private server
- Start the server and wait until its console or hosting panel shows that it is ready.
- Open Minecraft Java Edition with the matching Fabric Cobblemon profile.
- Choose Multiplayer, then Add Server.
- Enter a recognizable name and paste the server address. Include the port if the address provides one.
- Save the entry, select it, and choose Join Server.
For a self-hosted server, the host uses the appropriate local network address when playing from the same network, while remote friends use the forwarded public address. For a managed server, everyone uses the address shown in the hosting panel. A successful connection should load the Cobblemon world rather than return a vanilla-only client to the server list.
Keep the server private and recover safely
Control who can enter
Use the server’s whitelist feature when it is available, add only the usernames in your group, and avoid posting the address publicly. Remove former players from the whitelist when access should end. Share the address through a private group message rather than an open forum.
Back up before changes
Stop the server before replacing mods, changing the modpack release, or deleting a world. Copy the world folder and important configuration files to a separate location. A backup is especially important before using a panel’s wipe function or converting an existing world to Cobblemon.
Plan updates
Do not update the server first and leave clients behind. Announce a maintenance window, stop the server, back up the world, update the server pack, then have every player update to the identical client release before reconnecting. If an update fails, restore the previous files and backup rather than repeatedly deleting random jars.
Troubleshooting common failures

A practical launch checklist
- All players own Minecraft Java Edition.
- The server and clients target the same Minecraft release, normally 1.21.1 for the Fabric pack described here.
- Java 21 is installed and actually used by the server.
- Fabric is selected consistently; no NeoForge client is mixed into the Fabric group.
- The exact Cobblemon release is recorded and installed on the server and every client.
- RAM is allocated with room for the operating system, using the rough group estimates rather than treating them as guarantees.
- A new world is used when Cobblemon is introduced, or a verified backup exists for an older world.
- Self-hosted groups have completed port forwarding and firewall configuration before inviting remote players.
- The server address is shared privately, and a whitelist is enabled when the host provides one.
- No one uses a wipe option unless the group has deliberately chosen to erase the server.
If you want the fewest moving parts, use the managed Fabric modpack path. If you want control over files and cost, download the official server pack and self-host it, accepting the extra work of Java, backups, and networking. Whichever path you choose, version discipline—one Minecraft version, one loader, and one Cobblemon release on both server and clients—is what makes a friends-only Cobblemon world connect reliably.
