To play a cloud game, choose a service that supports your exact screen, confirm that the game is available in your plan or linked store account, meet the service’s network requirements, and connect a compatible controller when required. The game runs on a remote server; your device receives the video and audio while your controls travel back over the internet.
Start by checking the precise TV model or mobile operating-system version. TV apps are limited to listed models, and mobile support, touch controls, game catalogs, subscriptions and supported countries differ by service. The steps below cover Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna, with requirements current to the official pages available on October 13, 2026.

What cloud gaming is—and what you need
Cloud gaming moves the demanding work of running a game from your device to a data-center computer. That remote computer renders the game, then streams compressed video and audio to your TV, phone or tablet. Your controller, touchscreen or keyboard sends input in the opposite direction. You can therefore play without installing the full game or owning a powerful console or PC, but the experience depends on a steady route between you and the service.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A complete setup has five parts:
- A supported screen: an eligible smart-TV model, streaming device, phone, tablet, computer or browser.
- A service account and access rights: a plan, an included title, or a linked store account for a game you own.
- A suitable network: enough sustained bandwidth, low enough delay and stable Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- An input device: usually a Bluetooth or USB gamepad; some titles accept touch, mouse and keyboard.
- A current app or browser: installed and signed in on the supported device.
Cloud streaming is not the same as remote play from a console in your home. The service’s remote server supplies the game, so your home console does not need to be switched on. It also means that a fast speed test alone cannot guarantee good play: distance to the data center, congestion, Wi-Fi interference, the device and the service all affect responsiveness.

Check the screen before choosing a service
TVs and streaming devices
“TV support” is model-specific. A service may support one year or operating-system revision of a television while excluding a visually similar model. Check the provider’s current device list using the exact model number, software version and country in which the TV is registered.
Xbox lists support for select LG televisions, select Samsung devices and listed Fire TV devices. Amazon Luna also lists Fire TV plus select Samsung and LG televisions. NVIDIA documents GeForce NOW support for selected TV and Fire TV hardware with separate requirements for Android TV and Fire TV. If your television is not listed, a supported streaming device may be an option, but verify both the device model and the service app before buying anything.
Phones and tablets
On mobile, operating-system support is as important as the hardware. Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide lists Android 12.0 or later and iOS/iPadOS 14.4 or later. NVIDIA provides an Android app path and an iPhone/iPad Safari web-app path for GeForce NOW. An app being available in an app store does not mean every game supports touch input or every phone has identical performance.

Check available storage for the app, update the operating system, and use the device manufacturer’s current Bluetooth implementation. A tablet with a larger screen can be easier to read, but it does not remove the service’s account, controller or network requirements.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox’s December 2025 guide describes Xbox Cloud Gaming as part of the Essential, Premium and Ultimate plans. The title list, features and supported devices can change, and not every game is available on every device or in every country. Open the current catalog while signed in and check the individual game’s cloud-play label before subscribing solely for one title.
Xbox Wire reported that overall Xbox cloud-gaming hours had risen 45% year over year in its December 19, 2025 article. That is an Xbox-published usage figure, not an independent measurement, and it does not predict the quality of your connection.
GeForce NOW
GeForce NOW generally connects the service to supported stores such as the account where you own a compatible PC game. You may still need to sign in to that store when the stream starts. Free-to-play choices are also available, but the supported game list and store integrations change. Check the current NVIDIA game and account-support pages before purchasing a game for streaming.

Amazon Luna
Amazon describes Luna as running games on remote servers and streaming video and audio to a supported device. Its current offering includes Prime-included games and other catalog choices. About Amazon reported more than 60 games available to Prime members at no additional cost and more than 45 GameNight titles in its September 21, 2026 update. Those are Amazon’s figures at that date; included games, GameNight titles and country support may change.
Why a subscription does not unlock every game
Cloud services license or aggregate catalogs; they do not automatically provide every console or PC release. A plan can include a rotating library, require a separate purchase, or require ownership through a linked store. Read the title’s access label, supported platform and region before paying.
Prepare a network that can handle interactive video
Use the service’s published threshold
Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps. For Android TV and Fire TV, NVIDIA lists 15 Mbps for HD at up to 60 frames per second and 25 Mbps for Full HD at 60 frames per second, with less than 80 milliseconds of latency to an NVIDIA data center recommended. Those NVIDIA figures apply to the specified TV paths; they are not requirements for every service or device.

Bandwidth is a floor, not a promise. A connection that briefly reaches the target and then fluctuates can produce blur, pauses or input delay. Other household traffic, weak wireless coverage and a distant data center can matter even when a speed test looks good.

Prefer Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi
- Connect a TV or streaming device by Ethernet when the router and room layout allow it.
- If using Wi-Fi, use the 5 GHz band near the router; avoid placing the access point behind the TV or inside a cabinet.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups and high-bitrate video streams while testing a game.
- Run a test at the location where you will play, not only beside the router.
- Repeat the test at the time of day when your household normally uses the connection.
Recognize the symptoms
- Blocky or soft video: the stream is reducing quality because bandwidth or stability is insufficient.
- Audio cuts or pauses: packets are being delayed or lost.
- Controls feel late while video remains clear: latency between your device, service and game server is high.
- Frequent disconnects: the app, Wi-Fi link, account session or service region may be failing.
Choose and connect the controller
A controller is the safest default for TV play. Xbox says most games require a gamepad, although some compatible games offer touch or mouse-and-keyboard controls. NVIDIA states that a supported gamepad must be used for TV gameplay; its Android virtual gamepad is not recommended for long-term play. Luna supports a compatible controller and, for GameNight, a phone as described by Amazon.
- Charge the controller or connect fresh batteries.
- Put it in pairing mode and open the TV, phone or tablet’s Bluetooth settings.
- Select the controller, wait for the connected status, then open the cloud-gaming app.
- If the service does not detect it, connect by USB where supported, remove an old pairing from another device, and restart the app.
- Check the game’s input description. A service may support a controller in its menu while an individual title expects touch, a keyboard or a different button layout.
Try a controller you already own before buying a new one. Compatibility is determined by the combination of controller, operating system, app and game, not by the controller’s branding alone.
Set up cloud gaming on a TV
- Identify the exact hardware. Record the television model, operating-system version and country. For a Fire TV device, record its model generation as well.
- Check the provider list. Confirm that the model appears on the current Xbox, NVIDIA or Amazon Luna support page and that the app is offered in your region.
- Update the TV or streaming device. Install pending system updates before installing the gaming app.
- Install and sign in. Get the official app from the TV’s app store, open it, and sign in to the account that owns the plan or linked game-store access.
- Improve the connection. Use Ethernet if practical; otherwise connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi and reduce competing traffic.
- Pair the gamepad. Complete Bluetooth or USB pairing at the system level, then confirm the app recognizes it.
- Choose a title you are entitled to play. Use the cloud-play or included-game label rather than assuming that a console or PC purchase is automatically available.
- Start a short test session. Check picture clarity, sound, button response and whether the session remains connected before settling in for a long play session.
If an app is missing, do not infer that the TV is compatible from its brand or age. Recheck the precise model and software requirements. A listed Fire TV device may provide a supported route when the built-in smart-TV app is unavailable, but the device and service must both be on their current compatibility lists.

- Update Android and confirm that the device meets the service’s published version requirement. Xbox lists Android 12.0 or later in its December 2025 guide.
- Install the supported app or open the service’s supported browser path, then sign in.
- Connect a Bluetooth or USB gamepad unless the specific title clearly supports touch.
- Use a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection where possible; cellular performance varies with location and congestion.
- Open the game catalog, verify access, and launch the title.
- Rotate the device or adjust the phone’s game mode only after confirming that the service and game support the chosen orientation and controls.
For NVIDIA’s Android path, use the current GeForce NOW app and its device requirements. NVIDIA’s virtual gamepad can help with a brief test, but the company does not recommend it for extended play.

Set up cloud gaming on an iPhone or iPad
- Update iOS or iPadOS. Xbox’s December 2025 guide lists iOS/iPadOS 14.4 or later.
- Follow the service’s current iPhone or iPad browser instructions. NVIDIA documents adding its GeForce NOW Safari web app to the Home Screen rather than relying on an iOS-native app.
- Sign in through the approved browser or web app and allow the page to use the required controls.
- Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller. Touch support is title-specific, so do not assume that a game playable on a TV will accept touch on iPad.
- Launch a permitted game and keep the browser, device and controller awake for the session.
Safari web-app behavior can change with iOS updates. If the shortcut stops launching, remove the old Home Screen icon and recreate it from the service’s current instructions.
Troubleshoot the problems that stop a session
The app or game is unavailable
Recheck the exact device model, operating-system version and country. Then confirm that the title is in the current catalog, included in your plan or owned through a linked store account. A device can be supported while a particular game is excluded.
The controller will not pair or is not recognized
Disconnect it from another phone, console or computer, charge it, and pair it again from the operating system’s Bluetooth menu. Close and reopen the cloud app after pairing. On a TV, try USB if the device supports it. If only one game fails, inspect that game’s input requirements rather than replacing the controller immediately.
Video is blurry or keeps buffering
Move to Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, reduce other traffic, and test near the router. If the problem follows the service but not other internet activity, check the provider’s status information and regional data-center guidance. Meeting the published Mbps figure does not eliminate congestion or latency.
Controls feel delayed
Use a wired connection where possible, reduce wireless distance and interference, and stop background traffic. On NVIDIA TV paths, compare your measured latency with the recommended less-than-80-ms connection to an NVIDIA data center. A farther service region may remain responsive enough for some games but unsuitable for timing-sensitive play.
The session disconnects
Update the app and device, sign out of unused sessions, verify the account, and restart the router and streaming device. If only one service disconnects, check whether its current country list, plan terms or service status has changed.
Make the choice that fits your setup
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming when
- Your target device appears on Xbox’s supported list.
- You want a service-centered library and are comfortable checking which titles are included in Essential, Premium or Ultimate.
- You can provide at least the recommended 20 Mbps connection and a compatible controller for most games.
Choose GeForce NOW when
- You already own supported PC games through a linked store account.
- Your TV or mobile device meets NVIDIA’s specific app and hardware requirements.
- You can meet the resolution-specific bandwidth and latency guidance for your TV path.
Choose Amazon Luna when
- You have a supported Fire TV, mobile device, computer, Chromebook or listed Samsung/LG TV.
- Its current country availability and catalog include the games you want.
- Prime-included games or Luna’s other current offerings fit your access needs, and you understand that the catalog can change.
For any service, decide from the screen outward: verify hardware, then game access, then network, then controls. That order prevents paying for a subscription or streaming device that cannot run the title you intend to play.
