How to Play Classic Nintendo and PlayStation Games on a PC

PC emulation depends on the original console and emulator. See the documented PCSX2 setup for PS2, BIOS and game-media considerations, hardware requirements, and Nintendo’s official Switch-family classic libraries.

You can play some classic PlayStation games on a PC with an emulator, but the setup depends on the original console and the emulator’s requirements. For PlayStation 2, PCSX2 documents a route using a BIOS dumped from your own PS2 and an original game disc or an image made from your own disc. Nintendo games require a separate, system-specific decision: Nintendo says it does not currently offer or authorize a PC product for playing or downloading its game files, though it offers selected classic libraries on Switch-family consoles.

Choose the route for the console you want to play

“Classic Nintendo and PlayStation games” covers many different consoles, and there is no single emulator setup that applies equally to all of them. Start by identifying the original system—such as PS2, PS1, NES, or Nintendo 64—then check the official documentation for the emulator or RetroArch core that supports that system. BIOS needs, supported games, and setup steps can differ even between emulators for the same console.

  • For PS2: PCSX2 has a documented PC setup and supports original discs as well as ISO or CSO images created from discs. Its project says it is not ready to use out of the box. Read the PCSX2 FAQ and setup documentation.
  • For other PlayStation systems or Nintendo systems: choose an emulator or RetroArch core that explicitly supports the target console, then follow that project’s current compatibility, BIOS, and setup instructions. The requirements described below for PCSX2 are specifically for PS2 emulation.

What you need for PS2 emulation with PCSX2

PCSX2’s documented setup calls for the PCSX2 software, a PS2 BIOS dumped from your own console, and game media you are entitled to use. You can play an original PS2 disc or use an ISO or CSO image made from your own disc. The emulator’s FAQ describes collecting original discs, including through second-hand game stores or marketplaces, as an option; check the disc’s condition and regional compatibility before buying. 1. Check your PC against the PS2 requirements. Compare the project’s minimum and recommended profiles below with your operating system, processor, graphics hardware, and memory.
  2. Get PCSX2 from its official project source. Use the project’s documentation and official download links rather than third-party emulator download sites.
  3. Dump the BIOS from your own PS2. PCSX2’s documented route requires the console’s BIOS; the emulator is not supplied ready to run with one.
  4. Run the first-time setup wizard. Follow its prompts to configure PCSX2 and point it to the BIOS files you obtained through the documented process.
  5. Load your game. Use an original disc or an image you created from your own disc, following PCSX2’s current documentation for loading and configuring games.

Performance depends on the individual game and settings. PCSX2 notes that demanding games and higher internal resolutions can need more capable hardware than the minimum profile, so a specification threshold is not a guarantee that every title will run well on a particular PC.

PCSX2 PC requirements: minimum and recommended profiles

The following are specifications published by the PCSX2 project, not independently tested performance results. The project says its recommended profile targets roughly three times internal resolution, around 1080p; higher resolutions can require more GPU capacity. PCSX2 FAQ

How BIOS files work in RetroArch

RetroArch is a front end that runs emulator cores; it does not give every core the same system or BIOS requirements. Libretro describes BIOS files as copies of the emulated hardware’s operating system. In its example list, Beetle PSX HW and SwanStation require BIOS files, while PCSX ReARMed marks BIOS as optional. Those examples concern PlayStation cores and should not be assumed to describe PS2 or Nintendo cores. Check the current documentation for the exact core you select. Libretro BIOS documentation

What to know about game files, BIOS, and legality

Emulator software, firmware files such as a BIOS, and copyrighted game files are distinct things. Buying a game does not, by itself, establish that downloading somebody else’s copy or bypassing technical protections is permitted. The legal rules for personal backups, circumvention, and emulator use vary by jurisdiction, and the sources below do not resolve every local-law scenario.

Nintendo’s support FAQ characterizes Nintendo game files obtained through peer-to-peer networks or third-party file links as unauthorized copies, says uploading or downloading pirate copies is illegal, and states that Nintendo does not currently offer or authorize a PC product for playing or downloading its game files. Nintendo also says authentic Nintendo games may be downloaded through Nintendo eShop or Nintendo websites. These are Nintendo’s stated policies; they are not a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal ruling about every emulator or personal-backup situation. Nintendo intellectual-property and piracy FAQ

  • Use official emulator and core sources, and follow their documented BIOS process.
  • Use game media you are legally entitled to use; do not rely on third-party ROM or BIOS download sites.
  • Check local law if you are unsure whether making or using a backup, or bypassing a protection, is permitted.

Official Nintendo classic games are available on Switch-family consoles

If you want an official alternative rather than PC emulation, Nintendo lists selected classic libraries for Switch-family consoles through Nintendo Switch Online membership access, subject to console and membership requirements. Its support page lists NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy libraries; the GameCube library is listed for Switch 2 only. This is a console option, not a Nintendo PC game-file product. Nintendo notes that periodic internet access may be needed to validate membership, and library availability or membership terms can change. Nintendo Classics library support

Use this checklist before choosing a setup

  • Target system: identify the exact console generation and verify support in the chosen emulator’s official documentation.
  • Firmware: find out whether that emulator or core requires a BIOS, whether it is optional, and how to obtain and place it lawfully.
  • Game media: confirm you have an original disc or cartridge, or a game file you are entitled to use, and that the software can load it.
  • PC capability: compare your CPU, graphics hardware, memory, and desired resolution with the emulator’s published requirements; compatibility and speed can vary by game.
  • Alternative: for Nintendo titles, consider whether the relevant Switch-family classic library meets your needs.
