Best Privacy-Focused Alternatives to Opera Browser

Brave, Firefox, Mullvad Browser, and Tor Browser protect privacy in different ways. Find the best Opera alternative for your needs.

Brave is a strong starting point if you want a familiar browser with Chromium compatibility and built-in tracker protections. Choose Firefox for a flexible everyday browser with Enhanced Tracking Protection, Mullvad Browser for stronger out-of-the-box resistance to fingerprinting, or Tor Browser when routing through the Tor network is central to your goal. They address different privacy needs, so there is no single best replacement for everyone.

What is the best privacy-focused alternative to Opera?

It depends on what you want to protect and how much convenience you are willing to trade. Tracker blocking, fingerprint resistance, hiding your IP address, and routing traffic through Tor are distinct protections. No one feature guarantees anonymity. Privacy Guides recommends different browsers for different needs; the comparisons below reflect those recommendations and browser makers’ feature descriptions, not a controlled head-to-head test.

Browser Best fit Tor routing Persistence and tradeoffs
Brave Chromium compatibility and built-in Shields protections Available in a separate private-window option; not equivalent to Tor Browser Private windows with Tor may be slower, according to Brave
Firefox Flexible everyday browsing and per-site controls No Search suggestions can send address-bar text to the search provider before submission
Mullvad Browser Stronger default anti-fingerprinting No; the Tor network is removed Clears history, cookies, and other site data when closed, which can mean logging in again
Tor Browser Browsing through Tor for anonymity goals or censorship circumvention Yes Network routing can affect site compatibility and browsing experience

Which browser should you choose?

Brave: Chromium compatibility with built-in protections

Brave is worth considering if you want a Chromium-based browser and integrated controls rather than starting with a bare browser and adding extensions. Brave describes its Shields as including protections against bounce tracking, such as removing tracking parameters, filter lists, debouncing, and unlinkable bouncing. These are vendor-described features, not proof that Brave blocks every form of tracking.

Brave also offers private windows with Tor. Brave says this option can make browsing slower; it should not be treated as a substitute for Tor Browser, which is designed around Tor routing and has its own privacy and security modifications. Brave documents privacy-preserving product analytics and says users can opt out. Brave’s privacy and security features and Privacy Guides’ desktop browser recommendations provide more detail.

Firefox: flexible everyday browsing

Mozilla says Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection blocks trackers that follow users across sites and includes protections against harmful scripts and malware. Privacy Guides recommends Firefox for casual users seeking an alternative to Chrome, citing its flexibility and per-site exceptions. Its protection is not a guarantee against every tracking avenue.

One practical privacy setting is address-bar search suggestions. Privacy Guides recommends disabling them because text typed into the address bar may be sent to the default search provider before you submit a search. For Mozilla’s overview, see Is Firefox a private browser?

Mullvad Browser: stronger default fingerprint resistance

Mullvad and the Tor Project describe Mullvad Browser as a free, open-source browser they developed together, using Tor Browser privacy technology without the Tor network. Its default setup includes private browsing, third-party tracker blocking, and anti-fingerprinting measures. Privacy Guides recommends it for stronger out-of-the-box fingerprint resistance, but cautions that changing defaults can make your browser fingerprint more distinctive.

Mullvad Browser clears history, cookies, and other site data when you close it. That can reduce persistent tracking, but it also means less convenience for people who want to stay logged in. The browser does not include a VPN connection, and using Mullvad VPN is optional; a VPN must be configured separately. See Mullvad Browser and the Tor Project’s explanation of what Mullvad Browser is.

Tor Browser: when Tor routing is the goal

Tor Browser is the clearest fit in this group when you specifically want your traffic routed through the Tor network for anonymity goals or censorship circumvention. The Tor Project says it is based on Firefox ESR with substantial privacy and security modifications, and that it resists tracking and fingerprinting. By default, it does not keep browsing history after you exit.

Tor changes the network path and can affect compatibility and the browsing experience. It does not make every activity anonymous: logging into an account that identifies you can still identify you. The Tor Project also advises against routing Tor traffic through a different browser because of deanonymization and information-leakage risks. Read About Tor Browser for the project’s overview.

Is Brave or Firefox better for privacy?

Neither is a universal winner. Brave is a practical choice when Chromium compatibility and built-in Shields matter to you. Firefox is a credible choice when you value flexibility and per-site exceptions, and are willing to review settings such as search suggestions. Privacy Guides notes that Firefox’s tracking protection covers common threats but not every tracking avenue. The available feature descriptions do not establish a controlled comparison showing that one is categorically more private.

Is Mullvad Browser the same as Tor Browser?

No. Mullvad Browser draws on Tor Browser privacy technology, but its Tor network routing has been removed. It focuses on making browser fingerprints less distinctive and clears browsing data on exit. Tor Browser routes traffic through Tor. Choose based on whether your priority is fingerprint resistance without Tor routing or using the Tor network itself.

Does a VPN make browsing private?

A VPN can change the IP address websites see and protect traffic from a local observer, but it does not by itself stop tracking through cookies, scripts, or a browser fingerprint. Mullvad Browser works with or without a VPN; its VPN connection is configured separately. Privacy Guides describes pairing Mullvad Browser with a VPN as a possible way to improve resistance to advanced fingerprinting by helping users blend into a shared crowd, not as a guarantee. Whether a VPN is useful depends on your threat model, and provider suitability should be assessed independently.

How to make the choice

  • Pick Brave if Chromium compatibility and integrated tracker protections are your priorities.
  • Pick Firefox if you want flexible everyday browsing and are prepared to review privacy settings.
  • Pick Mullvad Browser if stronger default fingerprint resistance matters more than persistent logins or extensive customization.
  • Pick Tor Browser if routing through Tor is the defining requirement.

Stricter protections and automatic data clearing can reduce convenience, customization, or compatibility with some sites. There is no established current, identical-method benchmark here for ranking these browsers by speed or overall privacy.
