How to Play Classic Gaming Consoles on a Modern TV

Match the console’s output to your TV’s inputs. If they do not match, choose a converter or scaler that supports the console’s exact signal.

Check the console’s video output against the TV’s inputs. If they match, connect them with the correct cable and select that input on the TV. If they do not, you will need a converter or scaler that supports the console’s exact signal. Ports vary by TV model, so check the labels and manual rather than assuming a particular set has a particular connector.

Start by identifying the ports on both devices

Look at the console’s label or manual and inspect its cable, then check the inputs on the TV itself. Common connections on older consoles include composite video, component video, and, in some regions, SCART or RF. Which ones are available depends on the console, its region, and the TV model. Sony’s console-connection guide and TV connection guidance describe the options and model-specific differences.

  • Composite AV: typically uses a yellow plug for video and red and white plugs for right- and left-channel audio.
  • Component video: uses a separate set of video connections from composite. Both the console and TV must support component, and the cable must match.
  • SCART or RF: may apply to particular consoles or regions. Confirm the exact connector and signal before choosing an adapter.
  • HDMI: some later or re-released systems have HDMI output; many original consoles do not.

Some TVs use a manufacturer-specific breakout lead rather than full-size composite sockets. Sony notes that the required connection can depend on the TV and, for some models, an included conversion lead. Check your TV’s manual for the correct adapter and input.

Choose a connection path that matches your setup

Connection path When it fits What to verify
Direct HDMI The console has HDMI output. The TV has a standard HDMI input and the console is powered correctly.
Direct composite The console and TV both support composite, either through built-in ports or a TV breakout lead. Match yellow video and red/white audio, and confirm any model-specific TV adapter.
Direct component Both devices support component video. Use a cable that matches the component terminals. Do not substitute composite unless the console also supports it.
Analog-to-HDMI converter The console outputs analog video, but the TV has no compatible analog input. Confirm signal format and mode, audio support, conversion direction, and whether it scales the image as well as converting it.
Dedicated retro scaler You want support for legacy gaming signals or multiple analog formats. Check supported inputs and modes, output resolution, console and region compatibility, and evidence behind any latency claims.

Use a converter only when a direct connection is not available. Product labels such as “AV to HDMI” or “retro scaler” do not establish compatibility with every console. Check the supported signal and audio formats against your console and TV before buying. Sony’s connection guides explain the relevant port types; a specialist guide to connecting older consoles to modern TVs discusses the general adapter and upscaler approach, but does not guarantee that a generic device will work with every setup.

Connect NES Classic Edition and Super NES Classic Edition by HDMI

Nintendo says the NES Classic Edition and Super NES Classic Edition are compatible with standard HDMI inputs. Connect the system to the TV with HDMI, select that HDMI input, and make sure the device supplying USB power is switched on. This guidance applies to the Classic Edition systems, not automatically to original NES or SNES hardware; check the original console’s output and the TV’s inputs separately. See Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition connection instructions.

Basic checks if you get no picture or sound

  1. Confirm that the TV is set to the input where the console or converter is connected.
  2. Check that the cable is fully seated at both ends and that any converter is connected in the correct direction.
  3. Verify power to the console and, if used, the converter. For NES Classic Edition and Super NES Classic Edition, Nintendo says the USB power source must be on.
  4. For composite AV, check that yellow video and red/white audio are connected to the matching inputs. If the TV uses a breakout lead, verify that it is the one specified for that model.
  5. Try the direct connection before adding a receiver or switch, so there are fewer possible points of incompatibility.

These are basic checks, not guaranteed fixes. If the connection still fails, confirm that the console’s output format and mode are supported by the TV or converter.
