To play a classic console game on a PC, first check whether that specific title has an authorized PC release or is included in an official PC program. If not, an emulator such as RetroArch can run compatible game content, but it does not provide the games—and you should use only files you are legally entitled to use. No single method works for every console or title.
Choose a route for the console and game you want
Start with the exact title, not just the console generation. A game might have a PC edition or official collection, work with an emulator, or be available only through a console service. Availability and compatibility vary by title.

| Route | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Authorized PC release or collection | Install or launch the publisher’s PC version. | Whether the specific game is available for PC and what license or account it requires. |
| Official backward-compatibility program | Play eligible titles through a supported PC app or service. | Supported games, region, subscription or purchase conditions, and whether an existing digital license carries over. |
| Emulator | Run compatible game content locally using software that imitates a console’s hardware. | Support for the console, game, emulator core, required firmware or peripherals, and lawful access to the game files. |
Can you play old Xbox games on PC?
Check the Xbox PC catalog first
Xbox announced an early-release PC backward-compatibility program on July 22, 2026. At launch, it included four original Xbox games: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Xbox said these titles could be accessed through the Xbox PC app in supported regions, purchased on PC, or played with Game Pass plans; an existing digital console license also carried over. Check the current Xbox app listing for availability and terms. This initial lineup is not evidence that the full original Xbox catalog is playable on PC. Xbox’s announcement describes the program as a broader effort intended to bring more Xbox games to PC over time.

Can you use an emulator for other classic games?
Yes, if the emulator supports the console and the particular game. RetroArch is one multi-system option, but it is a frontend for emulator cores, not a game catalog. It does not guarantee that every game, core, BIOS, or peripheral will work. Check the emulator’s current documentation for the system and title you want before setting it up.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Keep the game files separate from the emulator
You need compatible game content in addition to the emulator. Use files you are legally entitled to use, and check the law where you live before copying a cartridge or disc, downloading a game file, or obtaining BIOS files. Whether owning a physical game permits making or downloading a copy is not settled uniformly here, so do not assume ownership alone authorizes every method.
Set up controls
A controller is optional: some games can be played with keyboard input, while a USB gamepad may feel more natural. Confirm that your operating system and chosen emulator support the controller before buying or connecting it, then map its buttons in the emulator’s input settings. RetroArch’s documentation discusses gamepad and analog-stick input. Its netplay guide also explains that players need the same game content scanned into their playlists to play together.

Are Nintendo’s classic-game libraries playable on PC?
No. Nintendo Switch Online’s classic-game libraries are accessed on Nintendo Switch-family hardware, not through a PC app. Base membership includes NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries. The Expansion Pack adds other catalogs, including Nintendo 64, Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube; GameCube is exclusive to Switch 2. Membership, compatible hardware, and current catalog availability apply. Nintendo describes the library as containing over 150 classic games, a catalog figure that can change. See Nintendo’s classic-games catalog and Nintendo Support’s membership FAQ for current details. The FAQ says offline play is possible, but an active membership must be verified online every seven days.
