The right choice depends on the titles you want, the controls they need, and how much setup you are willing to do.
Choose the setup that fits your games and how you want to play

Do not judge a setup only by how many games it advertises. Check whether it includes the titles you actually want, whether its controls suit them, whether it works on your preferred screen, and whether it depends on a continuing online service.

Use a licensed handheld for the least setup
Atari Gamestation Go
Atari describes its Gamestation Go as a handheld with more than 200 built-in games, including PAC-MAN and games from PAC-MAN, Jaleco, and PIKO International. Atari lists a 7-inch display, Wi-Fi, HDMI output, USB-C ports for external controllers, and a rechargeable battery with a stated play time of 4–5 hours. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
Its control selection includes a paddle, trackball, d-pad, bumpers, numeric keypad, and standard gamepad buttons. That variety is useful when a title was designed around something other than a joystick or ordinary controller. Before buying, check Atari’s current game list and confirm the games and inputs you care about are included. HDMI lets you play on a TV, while USB-C ports provide for external controllers, according to Atari.

Buy a modern collection when you want specific games
Golden Tee Arcade Classics
A modern collection can offer a particular arcade series without requiring emulator configuration. Atari lists Golden Tee Arcade Classics for release on July 17, 2025, with eight games: Golden Tee 3D Golf, Golden Tee 97, Golden Tee 98, Golden Tee 99, Golden Tee 2K, Golden Tee Classic, Shuffleshot, and World Class Bowling.
Input support differs by platform. Atari describes touchscreen controls on Switch, a touchpad on PlayStation, and trackball or mouse control on PC. Check the storefront and edition for the platform you own, and make sure its available input method suits the games you plan to play.
Add arcade-style controls to a computer
Treat the joystick and game library as separate choices
A PC paired with an arcade joystick can provide a familiar arcade-style layout without a cabinet. X-Arcade describes computer use and provides control configuration information, but its included-games information says games are not included. It also says it stopped bundling arcade games with machines on February 20, 2020. Check compatibility for the exact joystick model, computer, and operating system rather than assuming all combinations work.

Obtain game files through legitimate routes
Emulator software and game files are separate matters. MAME’s version 0.289 FAQ says users need correct ROMs obtained through legal methods. It identifies possible routes such as obtaining a license from a distributor or vendor with authority, downloading ROMs released for free non-commercial use, or purchasing an arcade PCB and reading its game data. The available route and rights depend on the specific game.
Having a computer, owning an emulator, or owning a copy of a game does not by itself establish that a particular ROM download or copy is authorized. MAME also says its discussion of the DMCA exemption does not make unauthorized ROM copying legal. Check the rights for the game and jurisdiction rather than assuming every ROM can be downloaded or copied.

Atari’s VCS FAQ describes VCS Vault as including 100 Atari 2600 and arcade games, and says the Atari game store has a retro library from Antstream Arcade. It also says an internet connection is needed for account creation, updates, purchases, and streaming services. This information does not establish Antstream’s current availability outside the VCS, its current catalog, or its price and subscription terms. Check the service’s current offering for your region and device before choosing this route.

Watch for unauthorized game bundles
MAME advises caution about cabinets advertised with all ROMs included, since a seller cannot lawfully bundle copyrighted game files without the proper licenses. Nintendo’s intellectual property and piracy FAQ says look-alike retro consoles and HDMI sticks containing unauthorized copies of Nintendo games infringe Nintendo’s rights. That is Nintendo’s guidance about its games, not a universal ruling for every game or jurisdiction. Game rights and applicable exceptions vary by title and location.

Emulator software licenses also vary. Libretro’s license documentation notes that some software behind RetroArch and Lakka is under non-commercial licenses and cannot be sold or used in a commercial product or activity without approval from the copyright holder. Check the specific software and core license instead of assuming all emulators have the same terms.
