You can play many games in a browser without installing software. Start from a publisher or established gaming platform you recognize, check the web address, and leave if the page unexpectedly demands a download, extension, codec, or “required” update. Keep browser protections enabled and treat unexpected warnings as a reason to stop—not something to bypass.
Choose a game site you can verify
Open the game from a known publisher or established platform rather than an ad promising a free download. Check the address bar to make sure you are on the intended site, especially before entering an account password or other personal information. Know what a browser game should—and should not—ask you to do
Ordinary browser gameplay should not hinge on a surprise executable, browser extension, codec, or “player update.” If a page says you must install one to start or unlock a game, cancel the prompt and leave the site. Do not run a file or add an extension to remove an alert or continue playing. The FTC warns about unfamiliar sites and ads offering free games and other downloads. FTC malware guidance

Do not click pop-ups claiming your device is infected or urging you to install security software immediately. A warning presented by the page is not a reason to download software from that page; close it without following its instructions.
Take browser warnings seriously
Keep Safe Browsing or your browser’s equivalent reputation protection turned on. Google Safe Browsing provides warnings before visits to dangerous sites or downloads, and Chrome blocks some downloads it identifies as dangerous, suspicious, unverified, or insecure. HTTPS and browser warnings tell you different things: HTTPS encrypts traffic between your browser and a site, while a reputation or download warning signals a potential hazard identified by the browser. Neither replaces choosing a reputable source.
Keep your browser, operating system, and permissions in order

- Grant only necessary site permissions. Deny camera, microphone, and location access unless the game has a clear reason to use them. Notification access is not needed for ordinary gameplay; decline it if you do not want game-site alerts. Remove permissions you no longer need in your browser’s site settings. If you downloaded something or notice suspicious behavior
If a file was downloaded
Do not open it. Delete it or quarantine it using your browser or security software. Never launch a file simply because a page labels it a game component or update.

If the device starts behaving differently
A slow, freezing, or crashing device; browser redirects or a changed homepage; unfamiliar toolbars or add-ons; and an unusual increase in pop-ups can be signs of malware or unwanted software. They are warning signs, not proof of a particular infection. FTC malware guidance
- Stop entering passwords or financial information on the affected device until it has been checked.
- Update your security software, if installed, and run a scan. Follow its instructions to remove or quarantine anything it flags.
- If the symptoms continue, get help from a reputable technical support provider.
Do not respond to unexpected calls or messages pressuring you to buy security software, and do not install a product offered by the suspicious game page. Official guidance recommends basic protections such as updates and careful download choices; it does not establish that paying for a particular product is necessary to play browser games safely.
