How to Play ARK Survival Split Screen on PS4/PS5, Switch, and Xbox

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ARK: Survival Evolved can be a great couch co-op survival game, but split-screen support depends heavily on the platform you’re using. PlayStation and Xbox versions support local split-screen mullayer, while the Nintendo Switch version has more restrictive multiplayer options and does not offer the same couch co-op experience.

Starting split-screen usually means connecting a second controller, signing in with another profile or guest account, and joining a local or non-dedicated session. The exact steps vary between PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, and there are some limits to know before you start, including tether distance, performance drops, UI scaling, and account requirements.

This guide covers where ARK split-screen works, how to set it up on each console family, what Switch players can and can’t do, and how to fix common problems that stop the second player from joining.

ARK Split-Screen Support by Platform

ARK: Survival Evolved supports split-screen only on the console versions for PlayStation and Xbox. If you want two players on the same TV, you need to use the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S version of the game. The Nintendo Switch version does not include local split-screen co-op, and the PC version is generally treated as a single-player-per-device experience rather than a couch co-op title.

On PlayStation, split-screen works in local play and can also be used in certain hosted sessions, depending on the mode and server settings. On PS5, players are still running the PlayStation version of ARK: Survival Evolved via backward compatibility rather than a separate native PS5 split-screen edition. Performance is usually better on PS5 than on base PS4 hardware, but the core split-screen behavior remains the same: two players share one console, one display, and one game session.

On Xbox, local co-op is available on Xbox One and carries forward to Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility and Smart Delivery-style compatibility for supported ARK installations. The second player typically joins from the pause menu or by pressing the prompted button on the second controller once a world is loaded. As with PlayStation, both players are tied to the same machine and screen, so large bases, dense forests, many tamed creatures, and busy combat scenes can affect frame rate more noticeably than in single-player.

The Switch version is the main exception console players need to know about. ARK on Nintendo Switch does not support split-screen. Two people cannot play together locally on one Switch, whether docked or handheld. To play with another person on Switch, each player needs their own console, their own copy of the game, and access to an online or local wireless mullayer setup where supported by the current version and mode.

It is also worth separating split-screen from online co-op. Split-screen means two players using one console and one TV. Online co-op means players connect from separate systems over the internet or a network. ARK supports many online mullayer options across platforms, but that does not mean every version supports couch co-op. For local multiplayer on a shared screen, stick to the PlayStation or Xbox releases.

How to Play ARK Split Screen on PS4 and PS5

ARK: Survival Evolved supports local split-screen co-op on PS4, and the same feature is available when playing the PS4 version on PS5 through backward compatibility. There is no separate native PS5 version of ARK: Survival Evolved with a different split-screen setup; on PS5, you are still launching the PlayStation 4 edition. Both players can play on the same TV in a non-dedicated session, which is the usual couch co-op mode for ARK on PlayStation.

Before starting, connect two DualShock 4 controllers on PS4, or two compatible controllers on PS5. On PS5, a DualSense controller can be used for the PS4 version, and a second controller must be signed into a PlayStation user profile. The second player can use another local account; depending on how you are playing, a guest-style profile may work, but using a proper local PlayStation user account is usually more reliable.

  1. Launch ARK: Survival Evolved from the main PlayStation account.
  2. From the main menu, choose Host/Local.
  3. Select your map, game mode settings, and single-player or non-dedicated session options.
  4. Start the game with player one loaded into the world.
  5. Turn on the second controller and sign it into another PlayStation profile.
  6. Press the prompted button on the second controller, usually Options, to join the session.
  7. Create or select the second survivor when prompted, then spawn into the world.

For most players, the easiest method is to start a local single-player world first, then have the second controller join after player one has fully spawned. If the second player does not join from the main menu, wait until the game world is active and try again. ARK can be slow to recognize the second controller if the profile sign-in happens while the game is loading, so signing in the second controller before launching the session often helps.

PlayStation split-screen limits

PlayStation split-screen in ARK has several restrictions. The two players are tied together by a host tether distance, which prevents player two from traveling too far away from player one. This can affect exploration, cave runs, taming, resource gathering, and base building if both players want to work in different areas. Split-screen also reduces visibility compared with full-screen play, especially when reading small inventory text, crafting menus, map markers, and creature stats.

ARK: Survival Evolved - PlayStation 4
  • Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dino herd
  • Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
  • Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
  • Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
  • Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
  • Online official servers: local split-screen is not the standard way to join official servers and is mainly intended for local/non-dedicated play.
  • Performance: PS4 can struggle with frame drops, texture pop-in, and menu lag in busy bases or near many tamed creatures.
  • PS5 backward compatibility: the game usually runs smoother than on base PS4, but the split-screen feature and restrictions remain based on the PS4 version.
  • Account setup: the second controller generally needs to be assigned to a different PlayStation profile, not the same user as player one.

If the second player cannot join, restart the game, make sure both controllers are connected and assigned to different profiles, then load a local session again. If the prompt still does not appear, check that you are playing ARK: Survival Evolved rather than a different ARK title, update the game, and avoid launching into modes that do not support local split-screen. For smoother couch co-op, lower visual clutter where possible, avoid building enormous bases in one area, keep tame counts manageable, and use larger UI scaling only if it improves readability on your TV.

How to Play ARK Split Screen on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S

ARK: Survival Evolved supports local split-screen co-op on Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. The feature works in local single-player/non-dedicated sessions, letting two players share one console and one TV. It is not a separate menu mode; the second player joins after the first player has loaded into a compatible world.

Before starting, connect two Xbox controllers and make sure each one is assigned to a profile. The second player can use another Xbox account or a guest profile, but using a real profile is usually better if you want settings and character data to behave more predictably. For the smoothest experience, both controllers should be turned on before launching the game.

Steps to start split screen on Xbox

  1. Launch ARK: Survival Evolved on your Xbox console.
  2. On the main menu, have Player 1 select Host/Local.
  3. Choose a map, such as The Island, and adjust world settings if needed.
  4. Select Play Single Player or start a Non-Dedicated Session.
  5. Wait until Player 1 has spawned into the world.
  6. Turn on the second controller and sign in with another profile or guest account.
  7. Press the Menu button on the second controller to join.
  8. Create or select Player 2’s survivor, then spawn into the same world.

On Xbox Series X|S, the process is the same as on Xbox One because you are still playing the Xbox version of ARK: Survival Evolved through backward compatibility or the optimized console build where available. The newer hardware generally improves load times and can make frame drops less severe, especially on Series X, but split screen still has the same core restrictions. Both players share the same session, the same save file, and the same local performance budget.

One of the biggest Xbox split-screen limits is the host tether distance. Player 2 cannot freely travel across the map away from Player 1 in most local/non-dedicated setups. If the second player moves too far from the host, the game pulls them back toward Player 1. This can affect resource gathering, cave exploration, taming, and base building, so it is best to plan activities that keep both survivors in the same general area.

Xbox split-screen requirements

  • Two controllers: one for each player.
  • Two signed-in profiles: a guest account may work, but separate profiles are more reliable.
  • A local single-player or non-dedicated session: split screen is not used the same way as joining an official server from two consoles.
  • Enough display space: a larger TV helps because ARK’s menus, inventory, and crafting screens can feel cramped in split screen.

If Player 2 does not join, return to the Xbox dashboard and confirm the second controller is signed in properly. You can also fully close ARK, restart the console, reconnect both controllers, and load the world again. If the second player’s character is missing, check that the same profile is being used and that you are loading the same map and save. ARK can be particular about profiles, local saves, and session type, so keeping your setup consistent reduces problems.

For better performance, consider lowering visual clutter where possible, avoiding huge bases packed with lights and tames, and saving often. Xbox Series X handles split screen better than older Xbox One models, but ARK can still stutter during busy moments, large creature fights, or when entering dense areas. Couch co-op is most enjoyable when both players stay close, divide tasks clearly, and avoid overloading the screen with too many open menus at once.

Can You Play ARK Split Screen on Nintendo Switch?

No. ARK: Survival Evolved on Nintendo Switch does not support split-screen co-op, even after the major Switch version updates. You cannot connect a second pair of Joy-Con, a Pro Controller, or another local controller and play two survivors on the same console and TV. The Switch version supports single-player and online mullayer, but it does not include the local two-player split-screen mode found on PlayStation and Xbox versions.

Rank #3
ARK: Survival Evolved (PS4)
  • UK IMPORT VERSION , REGION FREE WORKS IN USA , UK PSN ACCOUNT REQUIRED FOR GAME DLC ADD ON'S TO WORK

This applies whether you are playing in docked mode on a TV, handheld mode, or tabletop mode. The Switch hardware can run ARK, but the game does not offer a local split-screen option in its menus. If you open a single-player world, host a non-dedicated session, or join an online server, there is no prompt for a second local player to press a button and join. A second Nintendo account on the same console also will not enable couch co-op.

What multiplayer options are available on Switch?

Switch players who want to play ARK together need separate systems and separate copies of the game. Depending on the version, server availability, and current online services, you can use online mullayer instead of same-screen play. For most players, this means joining an official or unofficial server, or playing with friends through an online session where each person uses their own Nintendo Switch.

  • Single-player: Play alone on your own island without needing Nintendo Switch Online.
  • Online multiplayer: Play with others over the internet, usually requiring Nintendo Switch Online.
  • Local split-screen: Not available on Nintendo Switch.
  • Same-console co-op: Not available, even with multiple controllers connected.

If your goal is couch co-op on one TV, the better choice is the PlayStation or Xbox version of ARK: Survival Evolved. Those console versions include split-screen support for two local players, with the usual non-dedicated session restrictions such as tether distance and heavier performance load. On Switch, you will need a second console setup instead: one Switch for each player, each with its own controller, game access, and online account setup if you are playing through internet servers.

For households deciding which version to buy, this difference matters. The Nintendo Switch version is useful for portable solo survival and online play, but it is not designed for two people sharing one screen. If you already own ARK on Switch and want to play with someone in the same room, the practical workaround is to use two Switch consoles side by side. If you want traditional couch co-op where both players sit on the same sofa and use the same TV, use ARK on PS4, PS5 through backward compatibility, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S instead.

Split-Screen Requirements, Limits, and Restrictions

ARK: Survival Evolved split-screen is local couch co-op, so both players use the same console and the same display. On supported PlayStation and Xbox versions, you need two controllers, two local console profiles or signed-in accounts, and a game mode that allows non-dedicated local play. Split-screen is not available in every version of ARK, and it is not a feature on the Nintendo Switch version, even if you connect extra Joy-Con or Pro Controllers.

The most common way to use split-screen is in a single-player or non-dedicated session hosted by Player 1. Player 2 joins from the same console after the world has loaded. This means the second player is effectively a guest in the host’s world: progress, access, and positioning depend on the host session. If Player 1 closes the game, shuts down the console, changes map, or leaves the session, Player 2 is disconnected as well.

Basic requirements

  • Supported platform: PS4, PS5 running the PS4 version through backward compatibility, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S running a supported Xbox version.
  • Two controllers: each player needs a separate paired controller with enough battery charge for long sessions.
  • Two profiles: Player 2 usually needs to sign in to a second local user, guest account, or console profile.
  • Local display: split-screen works best on a larger TV because inventory text, crafting menus, and status icons become smaller.
  • Installed game and updates: both the base game and relevant patches should be installed before troubleshooting controller or join problems.

There are also gameplay restrictions to expect. ARK uses a tether system in non-dedicated sessions, which keeps the second player within a limited distance of the host. If Player 2 moves too far away, the game may pull them back toward Player 1 or prevent further movement. This affects exploration, resource gathering, cave runs, taming, and base building because both players cannot freely roam opposite sides of the map at the same time.

Common split-screen limits

  • Tether distance: the non-host player must stay within range of the host, especially on console versions.
  • Performance drops: frame rate can dip during storms, large base rendering, heavy creature activity, or combat with many dinosaurs.
  • Smaller interface: menus, item descriptions, engrams, and map markers are harder to read in split-screen.
  • Host dependency: the world is controlled by Player 1, and Player 2 cannot keep playing locally if the host leaves.
  • Mode limitations: official online servers are not the same as local split-screen, and some server setups may not allow a second local player.

Because of these limits, split-screen is better suited for shared base building, early-game survival, taming nearby creatures, farming resources around camp, and exploring together in the same area. For fully independent exploration, large tribes, PvP, or long-distance map progression, two separate consoles with two copies of the game provide a smoother experience than local split-screen. Still, for couch co-op on supported PlayStation and Xbox systems, split-screen remains a practical way to share one ARK world from the same room.

Troubleshooting ARK Split-Screen Problems

If ARK: Survival Evolved split screen is not working, start by confirming that you are using a version that actually supports local co-op. On PlayStation and Xbox, split screen works in local single-player and non-dedicated sessions, but it is not available on Nintendo Switch. It also will not work if you are trying to join certain server types, using cloud streaming, or playing a version where local mullayer is not included. Before changing settings, restart the game fully, make sure both controllers are connected, and check that each player is signed into a valid console profile.

Second Player Cannot Join

The most common problem is pressing the join button and nothing happening. On PS4 or PS5, the second player usually needs to press the Options button after the first player has loaded into the world. On Xbox, the second player normally presses the Menu button. If that does not work, turn the second controller off and on again, sign the second player into a different local account, then try again after the host character is fully spawned. Guest accounts can be inconsistent, so using a normal console profile is often more reliable.

  • Load into the ARK world with Player 1 first, then add Player 2.
  • Use two separate controller profiles instead of one shared account.
  • Check that both controllers are assigned correctly in the console menu.
  • Close ARK completely and relaunch it if the join prompt does not respond.

Split Screen Is Laggy or Keeps Freezing

ARK is demanding even in single-player, and split screen makes the console render two viewpoints at once. If performance is poor, reduce the strain on the game world. Avoid building huge bases packed with lights, storage boxes, tames, crop plots, and turrets in one area. If you are on older hardware such as PS4 or Xbox One, stay away from extremely dense parts of the map when possible, and consider playing on simpler maps before moving to larger or more visually busy ones. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, performance is usually better through backward compatibility, but frame drops can still happen around large bases or heavy creature spawns.

Players Are Pulled Back Together by the Tether

In non-dedicated split-screen sessions, the second player cannot travel freely across the entire map. If Player 2 moves too far from the host, the game may pull them back, block movement, or teleport them closer. This is normal behavior for ARK local co-op and cannot be removed on console in the same way a full dedicated server can avoid it. Plan activities around the tether: gather resources in the same region, explore caves together, and move as a pair when traveling by raft, flyer, or mount.

Problem Common Fix
Second player will not join Use a separate profile, reconnect the controller, and press Options or Menu after loading in
Heavy lag or stuttering Reduce base clutter, avoid crowded areas, and restart the console before long sessions
Player 2 keeps teleporting Stay closer to the host because non-dedicated sessions use a tether
Text or menus are hard to read Use a larger TV, sit closer, and adjust UI scale or safe-zone settings if available

If characters disappear, inventories look wrong, or the world fails to save properly, stop playing and exit through ARK’s menu instead of closing the app from the console dashboard. Give the game time to save before shutting down. For recurring crashes, check for game updates, free up storage space, and avoid suspending the game for long periods in rest mode or quick resume. A clean restart before starting a split-screen session can prevent many controller, profile, and performance issues.

Tips for a Better ARK Couch Co-Op Experience

ARK: Survival Evolved split screen can be a lot of fun, but it works best when both players plan around the limits of local co-op. The shared-screen view, host tether, small text, and performance drops can make normal survival tasks harder than they are in single-player. A few setup changes and habits can make couch co-op feel much smoother, especially during the first few hours on The Island, Ragnarok, or other large maps.

Use a large screen and adjust the interface

Split screen makes ARK’s already busy interface much harder to read. If possible, play on the largest TV available and sit close enough to read inventory text, crafting requirements, and map markers without squinting. Before starting a serious session, open the options menu and adjust HUD scale, gamma, camera shake, subtitles, and controller sensitivity for each player. Lowering camera shake and increasing gamma can help both players see better during caves, night travel, and underwater sections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Divide jobs early

ARK couch co-op is easier when each player has a role instead of both players opening the same menus and chasing the same resources. One player can focus on gathering thatch, wood, fiber, and hide, while the other handles crafting, cooking, taming supplies, and base placement. Later, one player can manage flyers and scouting while the other organizes storage, farming, breeding, and defenses. This keeps progress steady and reduces time spent waiting in menus.

  • Builder: places foundations, beds, storage, crafting stations, and defenses.
  • Gatherer: collects wood, stone, metal, fiber, berries, and hide.
  • Tamer: prepares narcotics, food, bolas, traps, and saddles.
  • Scout: watches for predators, supply drops, caves, and safer travel routes.

Build your base around the tether

On console split screen, the second player is usually limited by a host tether in non-dedicated sessions. This means both players need to stay within a certain range of the host. To avoid constant pulling, place your first base somewhere with several nearby resource types: trees, stone, bushes, water, and beginner-friendly creatures. Beaches and open river areas are often easier than cliffs, dense forests, or swamp borders. If one player wants to mine metal or scout far away, have the host go with them rather than sending the second player alone.

Keep performance in mind

ARK can struggle in split screen, especially around large bases, many tames, heavy lighting, or crowded areas full of wild creatures. Keep early bases simple and avoid placing hundreds of structures in one small spot. Turn off unnecessary torches, spread out storage, and avoid leaving too many dropped items on the ground. If the game starts stuttering, save and restart the session before entering caves, boss fights, or long taming trips.

  • Use fewer decorative structures in your main base.
  • Keep tame groups organized and avoid parking every dinosaur in one dense cluster.
  • Close other apps on the console before playing.
  • Restart the game after long sessions to reduce crashes and visual glitches.

Communicate before risky actions

Many split-screen problems come from one player moving too quickly while the other is crafting, leveling up, or managing inventory. Before flying away, entering water, starting a tame, attacking a dangerous dinosaur, or fast traveling, check that both players are ready. Beds, sleeping bags, spare armor, and backup tools should be placed before exploring. ARK is punishing when things go wrong, but couch co-op becomes much more manageable when both players travel prepared and treat big moves as shared decisions.

How do you fix ARK split screen not working?

Make sure the second controller is connected, assigned to a separate profile or guest account, and active after the world has loaded. Use single-player or a non-dedicated session, since split screen is not available in every mode or server setup. If the join prompt does not appear, restart the game, reconnect the controller, and check that both controllers are properly signed in before loading the session.

Bottom Line

ARK: Survival Evolved split-screen is mainly a console feature, with PlayStation and Xbox offering local couch co-op while Nintendo Switch support depends heavily on the version and update situation. If you want the smoothest experience, set up a non-dedicated session, connect a second controller, sign in with another profile, and be ready for tether distance, performance dips, and UI scaling quirks.

Before planning a couch co-op night, double-check your platform, game version, and whether both players have usable profiles or accounts. Then lower graphics expectations, keep your base and dinos manageable, and use split-screen for casual survival, building, and exploring rather than large-scale endgame chaos.
