To play an encoded video, identify both the file’s container and the codecs used for its video and audio streams, then open it in a player or browser that supports that combination. An extension such as .mp4 identifies a container, not a guarantee that every device can decode what is inside.
What does “encoded video” mean?
A video file usually packages several streams and related information in a container. MP4, WebM, and QuickTime/MOV are examples of containers. The video and audio inside are encoded separately using codecs; a file can use one codec for its picture and another for its sound. A decoder, in software or supported device hardware, turns those compressed streams into frames and audio for playback.

That is why a familiar extension alone cannot confirm compatibility. Playback depends on the container, the video and audio codecs, and support in the particular player, browser, operating system, and device. How do I play an encoded video?
- Identify the actual media details. Note the extension, then inspect the file’s media details in a player or media-information utility if available. Record the container and the video and audio codecs; do not diagnose from “.mp4” alone.
- Try a compatible playback environment. Open the same file in a current player or browser that supports the identified container and codecs. Browser support can vary by version, platform, and device configuration. If the file works in one place but not another, compare their support before concluding that the file is damaged. MDN’s media formats documentation describes browser format support.
- Separate format problems from playback performance. If the video opens but stutters, check whether the device supports decoding the specific codec and profile. Hardware decoding is optional and device-dependent; software decoding may be used instead. Changing acceleration settings is not a universal fix.
- Convert only when necessary. If the target player does not support the source combination, and you have permission to convert the file, transcode it to a combination supported by that target. Conversion decodes and re-encodes the media; it can take time and lossy re-encoding can reduce quality. There is no universally best target codec without knowing the device, player, and intended use.
Why won’t my MP4 video play?
MP4 is a container, not a single video codec. Two MP4 files can contain different video or audio encodings, so one may play while another fails on the same device. The player may support the container but not one of its streams, or its support may differ from that of another player or platform.

Check the file’s actual video and audio codecs, then compare them with the capabilities of the specific player and device. If another player opens the file, that is useful evidence that the original app or platform may lack support; it does not by itself establish that the file is intact in every respect. For browser playback, MDN recommends checking media support and providing fallback sources where appropriate; see its audio and video delivery guidance.
How do I fix an unsupported video format?
- Confirm what is unsupported. Determine whether the limitation concerns the container, video codec, audio codec, or a particular codec profile. The exact error message can help narrow it down.
- Try another compatible player. Test the same file in a player that supports both its container and streams. If it plays there, focus on support in the original player, browser, or operating system.
- For a web page, provide alternatives. Use appropriate media type and codec information, detect support, and offer fallback sources so the browser can select a compatible option. MDN covers audio and video delivery and codec selection.
- Convert for the intended target if needed. Choose the output based on the target player’s support rather than assuming one format works everywhere. Keep the original if preserving source quality matters, because lossy re-encoding may discard information.
Why is playback choppy, and should I enable hardware acceleration?
Choppy playback is not necessarily a format error. A device may lack hardware decoding for the file’s exact codec or profile; in some environments playback can fall back to software decoding. Hardware acceleration can help only when the device and playback software support the relevant decoding path, and it does not guarantee smoother playback.

Check the device’s and player’s codec support before changing acceleration settings. FFmpeg documents several hardware acceleration mechanisms in its documentation. Microsoft’s Edge video playback troubleshooting describes one platform-specific case: H.264 playback may use a software decoder when acceleration is disabled or the GPU driver lacks the required decode profile. That example is not a diagnosis for every Edge device.

What developers need to know about browser video
Browser compatibility is not determined by browser name alone; versions, operating systems, devices, containers, and codecs all matter. For web delivery, provide media in combinations appropriate to the intended audience, describe the media types and codecs where relevant, detect support, and include fallback sources.

WebCodecs is a low-level browser API for working with encoded audio and video chunks and individual frames. MDN describes it as enabling efficient encoding and decoding with low-level control in its WebCodecs API documentation. It is not, by itself, a complete file player: parsing a container into chunks (demuxing) and packaging streams back into a container (muxing) are separate tasks.
What information helps diagnose a specific file?
