YouTube does not play a Google Drive playlist directly as a live broadcast. Instead, make the videos available to a cloud playout service, arrange or schedule them there, and have that service send an encoder feed to your YouTube channel. For a continuous loop, use a service that explicitly supports playlist looping; for a one-time broadcast, schedule a prerecorded event.
Choose between a scheduled video and a continuous playlist
Decide what you want the broadcast to do before choosing a service. A scheduled prerecorded event starts at a chosen time and ends when its video finishes. A continuous playlist runs through its items and starts again, if the playout service supports looping. These are different workflows, not interchangeable settings.

- One scheduled broadcast: StreamYard documents scheduling a prerecorded video to start at a selected time and end when the video is over. Its cited instructions do not establish direct Google Drive import.
- Continuous loop: Gyre documents creating a playlist from uploaded files, scheduling a 24/7 stream, and restarting the playlist when it reaches the end.
- Drive-to-library import: Restream documents importing an individual video from a Google Drive link into its Video Storage. This is an import step, not YouTube reading a Drive playlist live.
Product limits—including supported duration, file size, schedule count and quality—can vary by plan and change over time. Check the service’s current terms before preparing a broadcast.
Prepare video files and choose a cloud playout route
Import a Drive video into Restream
Restream’s Drive-import instructions require a link to a video file that is public or set to “Anyone with the link.” The documented formats are MP4, MOV, M4V and MKV. Maximum file size and duration depend on the plan. Restream transfers and processes the video into its own Video Storage; it does not document YouTube streaming directly from a Drive playlist. See Restream’s Google Drive import instructions (dated March 23, 2026) for the current steps and limitations.

Upload files to Gyre for a continuous loop
Gyre’s documented workflow is to upload videos to Gyre Storage, arrange them in a playlist, then schedule the 24/7 stream. Its help page says source videos must be uploaded to Gyre storage, including videos that are already on YouTube. The cited setup does not establish a Google Drive URL as a live input. See Gyre’s product page and its help documentation; verify the exact current upload and scheduling steps in your account.
Schedule one prerecorded broadcast with StreamYard
StreamYard documents scheduling a prerecorded video that begins at the chosen time and stops when the video ends. You can upload a file or select a prior recording. The cited material does not establish a direct Drive-import path for this option, so check current account options and upload the file if needed. Plan-dependent limits apply.

Connect the service to your YouTube channel
- Confirm live streaming is enabled. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Do this before the planned broadcast, not minutes before it begins. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup guide.
- Check channel permissions. StreamYard’s instructions require suitable channel-owner or Brand Account manager/owner permissions. Other services may have different authorization flows; confirm the permissions they currently require.
- Authorize the correct channel. In the playout service, connect the YouTube channel that should host the event. Avoid assuming that signing in with a Google account grants access to every channel or Brand Account associated with it.
- Set the event details. Select the correct channel, title, visibility (public, unlisted or private), and schedule. Confirm whether the service creates or connects a YouTube event and how it handles the stream at the end of the video or playlist.
Understand the encoder handoff
YouTube receives an encoded live feed; it does not fetch a Drive playlist and turn it into a live stream. In YouTube’s Live Streaming API, the liveBroadcast represents the event, while a liveStream describes the incoming audio/video feed and ingestion settings such as protocol, address, resolution and frame rate. A managed playout service may handle the key, binding and protocol setup for you. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes the distinction.

Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in a screenshot. If a managed service authorizes YouTube directly and does not show a key field, follow its own connection flow rather than looking for a setting it does not expose.

Test the playlist and the destination before going live
- Check that the uploaded or imported files are the intended versions and play correctly.
- Review playlist order, audio levels, aspect ratio and any transitions or gaps the service supports.
- Open the event preview or status view, if available, and verify the correct YouTube channel and visibility.
- Confirm the scheduled start time and time zone. For a loop, verify whether the service restarts at the end and what it does if a file fails.
- Watch the destination preview for picture and sound before sharing the live link. Confirm the public event behaves as expected from a viewer’s perspective.
When custom HLS ingestion matters
Most users of managed cloud playout do not need to configure HLS segment uploads. For a custom HLS encoder, YouTube’s requirements are specific: send TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds, keep a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and use HTTPS POST/PUT. The API guidance also specifies a media playlist rather than a master playlist, muxed audio and video, and correctly sequenced playlist and segment uploads. HLS can have higher latency because video arrives in segments. Read the current YouTube HLS ingestion requirements and YouTube API HLS guide before implementing a custom pipeline.
Google Cloud Live Stream API is a separate product for transcoding live linear feeds into output formats. Its documentation describes live inputs and channel/output configuration, not importing a Google Drive playlist for YouTube. See Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation, updated September 30, 2026.

Protect copyright and check YouTube’s rules
Having a video in Drive, owning a copy, or having permission to view it does not by itself establish that you have the rights needed to broadcast it. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights to every video, music track and other included material. Check YouTube’s current live-stream policies and any applicable claims or restrictions on the channel. A cloud playout service automates delivery; it does not grant content rights or guarantee monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the videos from the cloud, so no computer or home internet connection has to stay on. It is an option for continuous prerecorded YouTube playout, not direct playback from Google Drive; upload your files to StreamNeo first.
