How to Play a Playlist Continuously in Streamlabs Desktop

In Streamlabs Desktop, first check whether your installed build offers a VLC video source or another source that accepts multiple media files; if it does, inspect that source’s properties for playlist repeat controls. Streamlabs’ current official guidance found here does not confirm a universal Desktop playlist-loop workflow, so the source and its controls may vary by version. If you cannot find one, play the playlist in a separate desktop media player and capture that app’s audio in Streamlabs. For a documented repeat-and-queue workflow, Streamlabs describes controls in Talk Studio—but Talk Studio is a different product.

Choose the method that matches your setup

Route Best for What to know
Playlist-capable source in Streamlabs Desktop Desktop users who find a source that accepts multiple local media files A community report mentions using a VLC source, but current availability and exact loop controls are not confirmed by official Desktop instructions. Check your installed build.
External player plus app-audio capture Desktop users who cannot find a suitable playlist source Configure application audio capture and check for duplicate desktop audio, which can cause an echo.
Talk Studio background-audio queue Talk Studio users who want a documented track-repeat or queue workflow Talk Studio is separate from Streamlabs Desktop; its controls should not be assumed to exist in Desktop.

These routes also differ in what appears on stream. A playlist source may put video on the canvas; capturing a player’s audio alone sends sound, not necessarily its video. Decide whether viewers need to see the media, whether track order and shuffle matter, and whether the app’s audio can be captured cleanly.

Check Streamlabs Desktop for a playlist source

  1. Confirm the app. Make sure you are using Streamlabs Desktop, not Talk Studio. Streamlabs’ documented background-audio queue controls apply to Talk Studio.
  2. Inspect the source options. In your scene, open the source-add menu and look for a VLC video source or another source that accepts multiple media files. The exact source list can depend on the installed build; the available official Desktop guidance does not establish a particular menu path or guarantee that a VLC playlist source is present.
  3. Add and inspect the files if a suitable source exists. Add the playlist files, then open that source’s properties. Look for its own repeat or loop setting and confirm that the order is right. Labels and controls are version-dependent; do not assume a specific toggle is available.
  4. Test playback before streaming. Confirm that the source plays each file, advances to the next, and repeats at the end. Make a short recording or private test stream and check both picture and sound.

A community report describes using a VLC source in Streamlabs Desktop, but that anecdote does not establish that the source or the same controls are available in every current build. If you do not find a playlist-capable source, use the external-player method below.

Use a separate player and capture its audio

  1. Start the playlist in a desktop media player. Set the player itself to repeat the playlist, if that is the behavior you want. Verify the files advance and repeat in the player before configuring Streamlabs.
  2. Add application audio capture in Streamlabs Desktop. Use the available Application Audio Capture or audio-routing method and select the media player. Streamlabs’ audio-splitting guidance covers Application Audio Capture; available controls can vary with the setup.
  3. Prevent duplicate capture. Check whether the Desktop Audio source is also capturing the same player. Streamlabs advises disabling Desktop Audio when using Application Audio Capture to avoid echoes.
  4. Check the mixer meters. Play a track and verify that the intended Streamlabs audio meter responds. If it does not, recheck the selected application and routing.
  5. Listen to a test. Make a short recording or private test stream. Confirm there is sound, no echo, and that playback continues through the end of the playlist and into the repeat.

This fallback captures the player’s sound. If the media’s video must also appear in the scene, configure an appropriate video capture or source separately and test it; audio capture alone does not put the player’s picture on the canvas.

If you mean Talk Studio, use its documented queue controls

Streamlabs’ Talk Studio instructions describe this workflow: open Share, choose Background Audio, then select one track to loop automatically. For multiple files, use the queue’s repeat or shuffle option. Streamlabs states: “To repeat/loop an audio track, select one (1) track from your computer and the track will loop automatically.” This is Talk Studio behavior, not confirmation of matching controls in Streamlabs Desktop.

Troubleshoot a playlist that stops, goes silent, or echoes

  • There is no playlist source in the source list: The installed Desktop build may not expose one. Use a separate player with application-audio capture, or check whether another installed source accepts multiple files.
  • The source plays once and stops: Reopen the source’s properties and inspect its own repeat or loop controls. If none are available, set repeat in an external player and capture that app’s audio instead.
  • The mixer meter does not move: Confirm the playlist is playing, select the correct player in Application Audio Capture, and recheck audio routing. Use a short recording to distinguish a routing problem from a monitoring issue.
  • You hear an echo or doubled sound: The player may be captured by both Application Audio Capture and Desktop Audio. Disable Desktop Audio when app-specific capture is handling that player, then test again.
  • The sound works but the video is missing: Application Audio Capture routes audio; it does not by itself add the media’s picture to the scene. Add and test a suitable video source if viewers need to see it.
  • The playlist does not advance or repeat as expected: Test the playlist in the player or source itself, confirm its order and repeat setting, then make another short recording before going live.
