Identify what is significant, document what survives, address urgent safety risks, and choose the least intrusive treatment that meets the cemetery’s goals. The right work depends on the site, its ownership, the materials, and each marker’s condition.
Plan the work before treating the site
The National Park Service (NPS) recommends that cemetery preservation planning account for the landscape’s historic character, the significance of its features, management goals, and existing conditions. A plan should set priorities and define how much intervention is appropriate; possible approaches include preservation, stabilization, or restoration. It should not impose a personal aesthetic on a historic place.

Before field work, establish who owns or manages the cemetery and what permissions or local approvals apply. Those requirements depend on the site and are not settled by general federal preservation guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Research the cemetery. Identify its history, layout, graves, markers, monuments, fences, and other features that contribute to its character.
- Document current conditions. Record what survives and note damage, instability, biological growth, missing features, or other changes before work begins.
- Set priorities. Consider immediate safety concerns, whether the site is secure and documented, whether graves are identified, whether tombs may collapse, and whether further historical research is needed.
- Define the treatment goal. Decide whether the need is ongoing preservation, stabilization of a threat, or restoration—and limit intervention to what that goal requires.
- Assign work according to risk and skill. Routine tasks and significant repairs are not interchangeable; damaged or unstable historic features may require a qualified practitioner.
Choose cleaning methods cautiously
NPS cemetery-preservation course guidance says, “Cleaning stones should be done with the gentlest means possible” and advises: “Begin with water and a soft brush.” It warns against household bleach and abrasive techniques. A soft-bristle brush may be an appropriate basic tool when cleaning is warranted, but a brush is not a reason to clean every marker.

- Barry's Cemetery Marker Care System is the only product to be found effective to safely remove surface scale deposits. Please use Everbrite or Rust-Oleum (only on bronze surfaces) to seal the metal once cleaned for longer results

- Restores a long-lasting richness to dry and discolored surfaces of granite and bronze
- Depending on the severity of damage, results may vary. Varying climates and water damage can range the effectiveness of the kit
- Each kit contains 1 | 2oz. bottle of Cleaner and 1 | 2oz. bottle of Renewer. This is a small kit but enough product to clean at least 1 cemetery marker
The NPS best-practice recommendations address routine dirt and biological growth on government-issued marble headstones. They were developed by the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) based on research and funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration. They do not establish a universal treatment for every stone, unusual stain, vandalism, or accidental damage. See the NPS best practices for cleaning government-issued marble headstones.
Avoid power tools and other abrasive methods on historic stone. NPS explains that they can wear weathered marble or limestone and remove stone grains. The resulting rough surface can hold more pollutants, moisture, and microbes, contributing to further soiling and deterioration. As NPS author Jason Church puts it, “Our number one principle for cleaning grave markers is ‘Do No Harm.’” Read NPS guidance on abrasive cleaning of grave markers.

That detail comes from a 2011 manual, not a universal current specification; confirm it against the guidance governing the site before relying on it.
Leave significant repairs to qualified practitioners
Resetting a loose marker, repairing a monument, or restoring a carved tablet or sculpture can put historic material at risk if done incorrectly. NPS says tombstone and monument repair requires prior experience with historic materials and treatments, and that skilled conservators or historically trained craftspeople should restore tablets and sculpture.

Before choosing a treatment, weigh its fit with the material and condition, its risk to historic fabric, whether it requires specialist skill, and whether it aligns with the cemetery’s management goals and approvals. The appropriate approach for one marker may not suit another, even within the same cemetery.
