Plan an RV road trip by choosing overnight stops before you finalize each driving day: confirm that staying there is allowed, the site can accommodate your rig, and a space is available for your dates. Then check services, arrival rules, and a legal backup for uncertain travel days. A map pin or general reservation rule is not enough; the campground, land manager, property owner, or local authority is the source to verify.
1. Set the trip constraints
Before searching for campgrounds, write down the destinations you must reach, your travel dates, and your RV’s actual length, height, width, and weight. Add the requirements that could rule out a stop: hookups, a dump station, accessible facilities, or the ability to arrive late. Verify those details for each specific location; a map listing does not establish that a service is available or that your vehicle can reach the site.

Vehicle dimensions matter both at the campsite and on the approach road. Keep the rig’s measurements handy when checking campground limits and vehicle-aware route suggestions.

Use your route to identify convenient regions for a night, but do not treat a town, roadside lot, or public-land area as a confirmed stop. Choose a named campground or an alternative whose overnight rules you have checked. Recreation.gov recommends researching destinations, filtering campsite searches by criteria such as vehicle length, and reviewing visitor feedback. Feedback can help identify questions to verify, but current official rules should decide whether a stay is permitted.

Dispersed camping means staying overnight outside a designated developed campground without a reservation. It requires location-specific research; the term does not mean that any public land is open for overnight camping.
3. Verify each site’s rules, fit, and availability

4. Book the nights with the least flexibility first
Prioritize nights near popular attractions, during holidays or peak season, and in areas with few sites that fit your RV. Recreation.gov says, “Careful planning is important as most campgrounds and activities must be booked in advance – often six months in advance.” That is broad guidance, not a promise that a particular site opens six months ahead. Some opportunities become available only weeks or days before the visit, so check the exact listing and release schedule for your destination and dates. Recreation.gov road-trip planning
Review the exact reservation’s fees, cancellation cutoff, and no-show terms before booking. Recreation.gov’s standard policies are not a substitute for the terms attached to an individual facility or reservation; amounts and deadlines depend on the booking.

5. Build travel days around confirmed stops
Once the overnight site is confirmed, plan the day’s driving around reaching it with enough time to follow its arrival and check-in instructions. There is no universal safe daily mileage number established for RV road trips: route, traffic, weather, road conditions, and the rig all affect a realistic day. Instead of relying on a generic mileage target, assess the actual drive and avoid making a distant, unverified stop the only plan.
For a day with uncertain arrival time or route conditions, identify a second legal option in advance. Recheck closures, weather, and road restrictions before leaving and as the trip progresses.
6. Confirm permission for any fallback
Do not assume you can sleep overnight in a private lot, rest area, travel plaza, or an undeveloped public-land spot. Ask the responsible property owner or land manager and check applicable state and local rules. Restrictions can be specific to a place: Joshua Tree National Park, for example, prohibits sleeping in a vehicle outside a campground within the park. That is a park-specific rule, not a nationwide policy. Joshua Tree National Park campgrounds
7. Compare viable stops against the same checks
When more than one real option is available, use a consistent comparison rather than choosing by distance alone. Verify each item with the campground, park, property owner, or official land manager.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Permission | Is an overnight stay allowed at this specific property and location? |
| RV fit and access | Do the site’s vehicle limits and approach suit the rig’s dimensions and weight? |
| Availability | Is a site available for the dates, and when does booking open? |
| Route position | How far is it from the route and the next day’s destination? |
| Services and dates | Are required facilities available, and is the site operating on the planned night? |
| Booking flexibility | What are the cancellation cutoff, no-show rules, and total fees for this reservation? |
Can an RV GPS help plan overnight stops?
An RV GPS navigator can help screen routes and find candidate campgrounds or services, but it cannot establish that a road is safe or that a stop permits overnight stays. Garmin says the RV 795 can suggest custom routes using vehicle size and weight, provide warnings for conditions such as steep grades and sharp curves, and show RV parks and services, KOA campground content, and national parks in its directory. Garmin’s manual cautions that vehicle profiles might not be accounted for in all route suggestions. Follow posted signs and current road conditions, and verify overnight rules with the responsible property or land manager. Garmin RV 795
