Before buying materials or adding detail, break the costume into manageable parts. A practical checklist is:

Prototype fit before surface detail
Test the costume on the wearer before investing effort in finishing details. Check whether you can sit, walk, raise and move your arms, see clearly, and manage the heat. Adjust the fit and construction where movement or visibility is restricted. These practical checks matter especially for structured armor and layered outfits.

Check the destination event’s current rules before building or bringing a sword or other prop. Look for restrictions on dimensions, materials, weapon-like shapes, inspection, and handling; rules vary by venue, so acceptance at one convention does not establish acceptance at another.

Tokyo Game Show 2026 as a specific example
Tokyo Game Show’s 2026 cosplay rules prohibit swords and other weapons or armor such as firearms and chains, as well as items 50 cm or longer. The rules say clearly identifiable toys or soft imitations may be acceptable, subject to the full rules and staff judgment. This is a TGS-specific policy, not a general convention standard. If your planned prop falls near a restriction, ask the event rather than assuming it will pass inspection.

CD PROJEKT RED permits fans to create game-inspired cosplay, share it on social media, and wear it at conventions, fairs, and meet-ups. Its Fan Content Guideline, last updated December 10, 2020, lists cosplay props and characters from its games as acceptable fan-content examples. It also asks creators to identify fan work as unofficial, suggesting wording such as: “This is an unofficial fan work and is not approved/endorsed by CD PROJEKT RED.”

The publisher’s cosplay page says not to sell the cosplay, use it to promote other companies or products, claim official sponsorship, or behave offensively or illegally while wearing it. The broader fan-content guideline also generally restricts commercial use; its specific video and stream monetization exceptions do not grant permission to sell cosplay.
