Start by deciding what the camera must capture—such as a doorway, driveway approach, or gate—then test the view and network connection at the exact spot before drilling. The best position balances useful detail, broad coverage, a stable mount, reliable power and connectivity, and privacy; mounting height and angle depend on the camera model.
Choose the area and evidence you need
Plan around the scene you need to see, not the camera’s advertised viewing angle. A doorway may call for a clear view of a person’s face, while a driveway approach or gate may call for broader coverage. Those goals can compete: placing a camera higher may show more ground but make facial details less clear. Fremont Police describes this as a practical planning trade-off, not a universal height rule. - Identify the specific approach or entrance to monitor and the detail that matters most.
- Check the camera’s field of view against the actual scene, including corners and likely obstructions.
- Consider whether an additional camera is needed for overlapping coverage. The RCMP CCTV/CCVE guide advises designing the layout to cover the intended space.
- Where supported by the camera’s detection system, movement across the lens’s field of view may trigger detection more reliably than movement directly toward it; TP-Link includes this placement advice for its cameras. TP-Link placement tips
Test the connection before mounting
Take a phone to the proposed location and check the Wi-Fi signal, as TP-Link suggests, then use the camera maker’s setup process to test the actual camera connection before fixing it in place. SimpliSafe also instructs users to check the connection at the chosen location before mounting. These checks can expose a weak-signal spot, but they do not guarantee consistent camera performance after installation. TP-Link placement tips · SimpliSafe outdoor camera installation guidance
Set the height and angle for your model
There is no single mounting height that suits every outdoor camera. Manufacturer instructions differ, and the figures below apply only to the named products.

| Camera | Manufacturer placement example | How to use the guidance |
|---|---|---|
| SimpliSafe Wireless Outdoor Security Camera | 6.5 feet above ground; angle 30 degrees downward | Product-specific installation guidance; verify the live view and detection at your location. SimpliSafe |
| Netatmo Smart Outdoor Camera | 2.5 to 4 metres (8 to 14 feet); about a 30-degree tilt | Product-specific manufacturer guidance, not a general standard. Netatmo |
After choosing a position within your model’s instructions, review the live image and motion-detection behavior. Check that the target area is visible, faces or objects are as legible as the task requires, and branches, eaves, or other objects do not block the view. Also consider whether the camera would be easy to reach or vulnerable to damage. Fremont Police guidance
Reduce glare and check changing light
A camera aimed toward direct sun or a floodlight may produce glare that obscures the scene. Google Nest recommends a shaded location, such as under an eave, and suggests tilting the camera downward if glare affects the image. TP-Link also advises avoiding direct sunlight. Check the live view in the daytime and at night, when shadows and artificial lights may change what the camera can see. Google Nest placement guidance · TP-Link placement tips

Choose a secure mount and outdoor-rated equipment
Match the bracket and attachment method to the camera’s weight, the wall or support material, and the conditions at the location. The RCMP guide identifies weight, environmental durability, field of view, and vulnerability to tampering or damage as mounting considerations. Use anchors compatible with both the surface and the camera mount; there is no one screw or anchor kit that can be recommended for every installation. RCMP CCTV/CCVE guide

- Tighten the assembly and inspect the view again to confirm that the camera stays in position.
- If using a pole, account for wind movement: the DHS video-security handbook notes that added height can reduce stability and make movement more noticeable. DHS video-security handbook
- Confirm that the camera and its power supply are specified for outdoor use. Check the product’s weather rating, operating conditions, power requirements, and network requirements rather than relying on appearance.
For example, TP-Link lists its Tapo C520WS with an IP66 rating, a 112-degree diagonal field of view, and wall, ceiling, or pole mounting options. Those specifications describe that model, not outdoor cameras generally; check current details and instructions for the product you are considering. TP-Link Tapo C520WS specifications

Secure the camera account and home network
Physical placement is only part of securing a connected camera. The FTC recommends a strong router password, an enabled firewall, current router software, and WPA3 or WPA2 Wi-Fi encryption; it also suggests considering a separate network for cameras. FTC guidance on securing home security cameras
- Use a strong, unique password for the camera account rather than reusing one from another service.
- Install available camera and app software updates.
- Enable encryption and two-factor authentication when the camera service offers them.
- Review which people can access remote viewing and limit permissions where possible.
Frame the view with privacy in mind
Aim at the area you intend to monitor and avoid capturing neighbors’ private spaces unnecessarily. Privacy, audio-recording, notice, shared-space, and retention requirements vary by location, so check the rules that apply where you live. Google Nest also notes that familiar-face feature consent requirements can differ by location. Google Nest placement and privacy guidance
