For a consumer copy of Office 2024, redeem a new product key at Microsoft’s Office setup page, then install Office from the account linked to that key. Open an Office app and sign in with that account to activate on Windows. If you have a work or school license—or Office LTSC 2024—the installation route is different.
Identify your Office 2024 edition and license
Before downloading anything, check which product you own. Microsoft’s consumer Office 2024 editions are one-time purchases for one PC or Mac; they are not Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Microsoft’s Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 FAQ distinguishes these consumer products from Office LTSC 2024, an on-premises release for commercial and government customers.

Microsoft lists the app bundles and device terms in its Office 2024 FAQ. An assigned organizational license is not the same as a consumer purchase, and Microsoft 365 subscriptions have separate terms.
How do I install Office 2024?
- Redeem a new consumer key if you have one. Visit Microsoft’s Office setup page, sign in to the Microsoft account you want associated with the license, and enter the product key. Microsoft says redemption links the product to that account for later installation or reinstallation. If the key has already been redeemed, skip this step and use the account that redeemed it.
- Open Microsoft’s install page. Go to Microsoft’s Office download and install page and sign in with the account associated with the consumer license. For a work or school entitlement, sign in with the assigned organizational account.
- Choose Install and select the right platform. Follow the PC or Mac instructions shown for your account and license. For a business subscription, the install option may not appear until an administrator assigns the license and permits installation.
- Check the bitness if you are installing on Windows. Microsoft says the installer defaults to 64-bit unless it detects an existing 32-bit Office installation or certain standalone Office apps; in those cases it installs 32-bit. To change between 32-bit and 64-bit, Microsoft instructs users to uninstall Office, including standalone apps, then download the desired version again.
- Run the downloaded installer. Open the downloaded file and follow its prompts to complete installation. The precise screens vary by platform, so use the instructions displayed for your PC or Mac.
Where do I enter my Office product key?
Enter a new consumer Office 2024 key at setup.office.com while signed in to the Microsoft account you want to keep linked to the purchase. Microsoft’s product-key instructions explain that redemption associates the product with that account. Afterward, use that account to download Office; you generally do not need to enter the same key again to reinstall.

How do I activate Office 2024?
On Windows, open an Office app after installation and sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy the consumer license, or the work or school account to which the organization assigned the license. If the Activation Wizard appears, follow its prompts. Microsoft’s Windows activation instructions describe this sign-in and wizard process. They cover Windows; do not expect Mac activation screens to be identical.
Can I reinstall Office 2024 without a product key?
Yes, if the key was already redeemed: sign in to Microsoft’s Office install page with the account to which the product was linked, then download it again. Microsoft says the account association provides the route to future installs and reinstalls, so the original key does not need to be redeemed again. If you are unsure which account holds the license, check the Microsoft accounts you may have used when redeeming it.

Start by checking that the installed edition matches the license and that you are signed in with the account that owns it. For an organization license, verify with your administrator that it is assigned to you and that installation is allowed. If your entitlement is a Microsoft 365 subscription rather than Office 2024, check whether the subscription is active. Microsoft’s activation guidance and installation troubleshooting page provide further checks.

Microsoft says an Office installation that is not activated eventually becomes unlicensed, disabling editing features. If the underlying issue is an expired Microsoft 365 subscription, renewing it restores those features; that subscription remedy does not change the terms of a one-time Office 2024 purchase.
Can I move a one-time Office 2024 license to another computer?
Microsoft describes Home, Home & Business, and Professional one-time purchases as licenses for a single computer. Whether a transfer is permitted depends on the applicable Software License Terms and the region and purchase terms. Microsoft’s transfer and reactivation guidance says a permitted transfer can require uninstalling Office from the original computer and activating by phone. Check the terms that apply to your purchase before moving the license.
What if I need an offline or managed installation?
The consumer account-based steps above do not establish one offline procedure for every Office 2024 edition, Mac, and LTSC deployment. If you need managed or offline deployment, first identify the exact SKU and platform, then follow current Microsoft deployment documentation or ask your organization’s IT administrator. Office LTSC 2024 should be deployed through the organization’s applicable process rather than treated as a standard consumer install.
