To pin an app, search for it from the taskbar, right-click its result, and choose Pin to taskbar. If the app is already open, right-click its taskbar icon and choose the same option. These built-in steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Pin an app that is not open
- Select the Search box or Search icon on the taskbar and type the app’s name.
- Right-click the app in the search results and select Pin to taskbar.
The pinned icon is a taskbar shortcut for launching or accessing the app. Pinning it to the taskbar is separate from pinning it to Start. See Microsoft’s taskbar customization guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Pin an app that is already open
Right-click the app’s icon on the taskbar and choose Pin to taskbar. This is the quicker route when the app is already running.

- From Start’s pinned list: Press the Windows key, navigate to the app, and press Shift+F10 to open its context menu. Choose Pin to taskbar.
- From All apps: Press the Windows key, navigate to the app, open its context menu with Shift+F10, then choose More and Pin to taskbar.
- To unpin: Press Windows key+T until the taskbar selects the app, press Shift+F10, and choose Unpin from taskbar.

Unpin an icon
Right-click the pinned icon and select Unpin from taskbar. This removes the shortcut from the taskbar; it does not uninstall the app.

If “Pin to taskbar” is missing
Menu wording can depend on the app and its context menu. For Office programs, Microsoft documents a version-specific path: in Windows 10, choose More > Pin to taskbar; in Windows 11, you may need to choose Show more options > Pin to taskbar. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. This does not change the pinning steps; details are on Microsoft’s Windows Start menu support page.
