To find a game that will run well on hardware you already own, check the requirements and performance information for the exact game edition and platform—not just the game’s name. On PC, compare its listed requirements with your computer’s actual specs. On console or a Steam Deck, look for information specific to your model. Then check the resolution, frame-rate target, controls, and any required extras before you buy or download.
Start with the exact game and platform
Find the store listing and publisher support page for the version you plan to play. A PC release, console release, and handheld-compatible version can have different requirements, settings, and features. Even editions of the same game may differ in supported platforms or extras.

There is no universal hardware floor for “games that run well”: the answer depends on the title, your machine, and the resolution and frame rate you want. Xbox notes that “System requirements may vary by game, and performance scales with higher-end systems.” Xbox on PC
How to check a PC game against your computer
- Open the game’s current PC store listing. Find its minimum and recommended requirements. Microsoft says these are guidance shown on the game’s listing, not specifications enforced by the installer. Microsoft’s Game Publishing Guide
- Compare the listed parts with your actual PC. Check the processor (CPU), graphics card (GPU), memory and, where specified, video memory (VRAM), operating-system version, and available storage. A match on one component does not make up for another that falls short.
- Use the listed tiers as a screening check, not a performance promise. Meeting minimum requirements does not establish that the game will deliver a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics quality. Recommended requirements also do not guarantee a specific result on every system.
- Look for a target or report that matches how you play. Check the resolution, graphics preset, and frame rate together. If no information covers your hardware and intended settings, requirements alone cannot tell you how smoothly the game will run there.
Use the requirements for the particular game; another title’s requirements cannot reliably predict this one’s performance.

Read performance labels in context
A frame-rate label matters only alongside its resolution, settings, and platform. Microsoft’s publishing guidance defines its Xbox 60+ FPS and 120+ FPS designations around maintaining a steady frame rate at 1080p or higher. Those are criteria for Xbox listings, not guarantees for every title, PC, or console. Microsoft’s technical capabilities guidance
When comparing options, look for an explicit target or test result for the same version and a similar setup. A claim at one resolution or quality preset does not establish performance at a higher resolution or different preset. If the listing provides no relevant target, treat the expected result as uncertain rather than inferring it from a badge or requirements tier.

Check Steam Deck and Steam Machine compatibility separately
Steam’s Deck and Machine compatibility review considers more than raw performance: it examines input, default playability, resolution, and Proton issues. Valve’s documented baseline is 30 fps at 800p for Steam Deck and 30 fps at 1080p for Steam Machine. These are device-specific compatibility baselines, not benchmark results for an arbitrary PC or a promise about every game. Steam Deck and Steam Machine Compatibility Review

For a game you expect to play on either device, inspect the compatibility status and the review details, including any notes about controller flow or Proton. Steam lets users browse and buy games that may not work well on these devices, so check the details rather than assuming that availability means suitability.

For consoles, verify the model and available modes
Check the exact console generation and the game version listed for it. Where a game offers quality and performance modes, compare their stated trade-offs for that specific title; there is no universal console mode comparison that predicts how every game behaves.
If you want a high refresh rate or variable refresh rate (VRR), confirm that the game, console, and display support the feature you intend to use. A performance label on its own does not establish that your full setup can show it.

Compare the details that affect your choice

- Controls: keyboard and mouse, controller support, and any features that depend on the game or connection method.
- Platform features: cross-play, cross-progression, and whether the particular edition includes them.
- Practical requirements: storage, accounts, launchers, subscriptions, or additional hardware needed for the version you want.
Choose based on your own hardware, display, and priorities. A generic PC-versus-console ranking cannot account for those differences.
Check controls, accounts, and cross-platform features
Controller support is separate from whether a game runs smoothly. On Steam, check the listing’s controller-support details; PlayStation specifically advises PC players to look for “Full Controller Support” or “Partial Controller Support.” Some controller features depend on the game and the way the controller is connected.
