To photograph the Moon’s surface without turning it into a white blob, expose for the Moon—not the dark sky around it. Start with a low ISO and a short shutter speed, focus on the lunar disc, and inspect a test image for visible craters and maria. If you want the Moon alongside a landscape, plan for a different exposure: the bright Moon and dark foreground may not both retain detail in one frame.
Start by choosing the kind of Moon photo you want
Your exposure and equipment depend on whether the Moon itself or the scene around it is the subject.

A longer focal length makes the Moon larger in the frame; it does not by itself solve focus, exposure, or camera shake. A phone can make a useful contextual image, while a dedicated camera offers more control. NASA’s Lunar Photography Guide emphasizes that results depend on the camera, conditions, and the image you want.

Use a starting exposure for the lunar disc
The Moon’s sunlit surface is much brighter than the night sky suggests. If a camera meters the surrounding darkness, it may brighten the exposure until lunar features clip to featureless white. For a close-up, use manual exposure if available, spot-meter on the Moon, or apply negative exposure compensation. Check the result rather than treating any rule as a guaranteed setting.

Try NASA’s Looney 11 rule, then adjust
NASA presents the Looney 11 rule as a starting point: set the aperture to f/11 and use a shutter time approximately equal to the reciprocal of the ISO. That means ISO 100 at 1/100 second or ISO 200 at 1/200 second. Keep ISO low where possible to limit noise, but use a faster shutter if movement or vibration is softening detail.
These settings are a starting estimate, not a fixed recipe. NASA’s guide also shows particular successful images made at f/14, 1/30 second, ISO 200, and at f/11, 1/200 second, ISO 400. Those are examples from specific photographs, not settings that will work in every condition.

Check the surface, not just the meter
- Set manual exposure near f/11 and ISO 100–200, then try the corresponding Looney 11 shutter speed.
- Take a test frame and inspect the Moon at playback magnification. Look for detail in craters and darker maria, especially near the bright edge.
- Make a short bracket of exposures by changing shutter speed or exposure compensation. Keep the version that preserves surface detail without making the Moon needlessly dim.
- Use the histogram as another clue: if highlights are clipped, reduce exposure and take another frame.
FUJIFILM’s Moon photography guidance gives ISO 100, f/8, and 1/250–1/500 second as example starting settings for full-Moon surface detail, with slower examples for half and crescent phases. It recommends test shots and bracketing because phase, Moon altitude, air clarity, and thin cloud affect the result. Treat its figures as manufacturer examples, not a universal exposure table.

Focus on the Moon and keep the camera steady
For a camera, manual focus or the lens’s infinity mark can be a useful starting point, but neither guarantees sharp focus. Focus on the lunar disc and verify it with magnified live view or a test image. Inspect the Moon’s edge and surface detail, then refine focus if either looks soft.

Nikon’s Moon photography guide suggests infinity focus and a shutter speed of at least 1/15 second or faster, and recommends f/11 or f/16 when ISO permits. Those are general suggestions; at long focal lengths, even small movements and atmospheric turbulence become more noticeable. Favor a faster shutter where exposure allows, and use a firm support.
- Mount the camera on a tripod or place it on a stable support.
- Use the self-timer, a remote release, or wireless camera control to avoid a jolt from pressing the shutter.
- For telescope setups, NASA recommends live view or mirror lock to reduce mirror vibration.
Focus and expose with a phone
- Stabilize the phone on a tripod or steady surface, and turn off flash.
- Tap the Moon to focus. Lower exposure or screen brightness until the disc is gray enough to reveal features.
- Use the timer to avoid moving the phone when you take the picture.
- Compare the result at different zoom levels. Digital zoom may only crop the image; optical zoom, when available, is different.
Handle the exposure gap in a Moon-and-landscape shot
A bright Moon and a dark foreground may exceed what one exposure can record with detail in both. First decide which element matters most. Twilight can reduce the brightness gap; otherwise expose for the Moon and let the foreground become a silhouette, or expose for the foreground and accept a bright, featureless Moon. If you want detail in both, you can make separate exposures and combine them when that suits the intended look.

Composition helps make a landscape image feel specific rather than like a small bright disc against black. NASA senior photographer Bill Ingalls advises tying the image to a land-based object, such as a local landmark, to give it a sense of place. Nikon and FUJIFILM also discuss the tradeoff between exposing for the Moon and the landscape; the right choice depends on which is the main subject.

- Telephoto lens: useful when you want the lunar disc larger in the frame. Nikon identifies zoom and super-telephoto lenses as options. Check that a lens matches your camera mount; no single focal length suits every composition.
- Tripod or stable support: helps reduce camera movement. A phone can be propped on a steady surface; a timer or remote release helps prevent movement while triggering the shot.
- Telescope adapter: for afocal phone photography, the phone sits at the eyepiece and a phone adapter can help stabilize it. Prime-focus DSLR photography requires a camera-specific T-ring and telescope-specific T-adapter; verify compatibility for both.
- Remote release: optional if you already have a built-in timer or wireless camera control that can trigger the camera without touching it.
Start with the equipment you already have. Add a lens or telescope setup only if making the lunar disc larger or gaining more control is worth the additional compatibility and setup requirements.

Choose a phase with the surface detail in mind
A full Moon is bright, but its surface can look relatively flat because sunlight falls more directly on the visible face. During other phases, longer shadows around craters and mountains can make relief more apparent. Consider the phase as part of the composition, not just the exposure.
