How to Photograph Planets and the Moon With a Phone

A phone can capture the Moon with visible shading and frame bright planets as points of light. Get better results with controlled exposure, steady support and, for closer views, a telescope eyepiece.

You can photograph the Moon with a phone and capture bright planets such as Jupiter or Saturn as points of light. For visible lunar craters or a larger planetary view, put the phone camera to a telescope eyepiece. The key to a good phone-only Moon photo is usually not zoom: it is steady support, accurate focus and lowering exposure so the bright lunar surface keeps its detail.

Choose the right approach for your goal

Approach What it can do Best for
Phone camera only Capture the Moon with visible shading, or show bright planets as points of light. Quick photos, wide compositions and scenes that include a landscape or landmark.
Phone through a telescope eyepiece Magnify the view and make lunar surface details easier to frame. Closer views of the Moon and larger views of planets.

A telescope is optional for a basic Moon photo. NASA’s smartphone astrophotography guide calls the Moon a good beginner target because it is large and bright. Brightness is also the main phone-camera challenge: automatic exposure can turn the disk into a featureless white patch.

Photograph the Moon with a phone alone

  1. Plan the scene. Choose a safe place with an unobstructed view. For a landscape-style image, include a building, tree or other foreground feature. Twilight or dawn can reduce the brightness contrast between the Moon and sky. NASA photographer Bill Ingalls recommends giving a Moon photo a sense of place with a land-based object (NASA’s Moon photography advice).
  2. Turn off flash and focus on the Moon. Tap the lunar disk on screen. If your camera app offers focus lock, use it to keep focus from shifting.
  3. Lower exposure. Reduce the on-screen brightness or exposure until the Moon looks gray rather than blown out white and surface shading appears. If your phone has manual controls, try a lower ISO; control names and availability vary by phone.
  4. Steady the phone. Rest it on a firm surface or use a tripod or phone mount. Set a short timer or use a remote shutter if available, so pressing the shutter does not shake the camera.
  5. Take several frames and check them. Review both sharpness and exposure, then adjust and shoot again. If your phone has a genuine telephoto lens, compare its optical zoom with the standard lens. Digital zoom enlarges a crop rather than capturing more detail, so compare it with cropping the original photo afterward.

For a straightforward Moon photograph, a steady surface may be all the support you need. NASA’s Lunar Photography Guide and smartphone guide both recommend stabilizing the phone and controlling exposure.

Photograph planets without a telescope

With a phone camera alone, treat bright planets such as Jupiter and Saturn as points of light, not close-up subjects. Phone digital zoom will not reveal Saturn’s rings or planetary surface detail. Instead, compose the planet with a tree, building or other foreground object, or include the Moon when it appears nearby in the sky. NASA’s phone-photography advice for the Jupiter–Saturn conjunction likewise emphasizes composition and the limits of phone zoom; its conjunction dates refer to the 2020 event, not a current viewing date.

Use a telescope for closer views

  1. Aim and focus the telescope first. Center the Moon or planet in the eyepiece and bring the view into focus with the telescope controls.
  2. Align the phone camera with the eyepiece. Position the phone’s camera lens over the eyepiece. Handholding can work, but it takes practice; a smartphone eyepiece adapter can hold the phone in a more repeatable position.
  3. Refocus through the telescope. Adjust telescope focus rather than expecting the phone’s autofocus to work reliably through the eyepiece. Use a timer or remote shutter where possible to reduce shake.
  4. Start with a manageable view. On an untracked telescope, a highly magnified view can drift out of frame quickly. Begin with a less magnified eyepiece, center the target and work up if needed. NASA gives “as little as 30 seconds” as an example of how quickly the Moon can move out of a high-power view on an untracked telescope; this is not a guaranteed timing for every setup.

NASA describes lunar-crater images made through a Celestron C8 eyepiece with a hand-held iPhone 6s. That is an illustration of the method, not a guarantee of results or a recommendation that you need that specific telescope or phone. Results depend on the telescope, eyepiece, phone camera, alignment and atmospheric steadiness. Adapter fit also varies with the phone, case and eyepiece, so check compatibility before buying one.

Choose equipment only when it solves a problem

  • For shake in ordinary phone shots: first try a steady surface; a tripod or stable phone mount can help with repeatable framing.
  • For a phone that slips out of alignment on a telescope: consider a smartphone eyepiece adapter made to hold the camera over the eyepiece.
  • For close lunar details or larger planetary views: telescope optics are the relevant upgrade. They are not required for a basic Moon photograph.
  • For learning targets and technique: NASA’s free illustrated Guide to Smartphone Astronomy, listed by NASA as updated September 18, 2025, covers the Moon and planets.

NASA’s smartphone astrophotography article was last updated in October 2024, and its Moon-photography article in November 2024. Their older phone examples are demonstrations rather than controlled comparisons across current phones; the practical steps above do not depend on a particular phone model.
