For sharper takeoff photos, pick a permitted viewing spot with a clear runway or departure-path view, track the aircraft with continuous autofocus, and begin with a fast shutter speed. Then follow the plane smoothly and shoot a short burst as it lifts off. The right location and settings depend on the airport, light, distance, and camera.
Choose a permitted viewing location first
Check the airport’s official visitor or plane-spotting information before you go. Confirm that the viewing area is open, that you can photograph there, and that your chosen position has an unobstructed view of the runway or departure path. Heathrow and Helsinki publish examples of viewing locations, but their arrangements are local rather than rules for other airports: Heathrow viewing area and Helsinki Airport spotting.

Photography rules can differ even between facilities at the same airport. Finavia says photography from Helsinki Airport’s terminal is allowed without a separate permit. Centrair’s observation-deck instructions prohibit flash photography and pointing reflectors toward parked or operating aircraft; they also say not to use a stepladder without security-company permission. Those policies apply to the named locations, so check the current rules for the specific airport and observation area before setting up: Finavia’s Helsinki guidance and Centrair observation deck.

Choose a lens for the distance
A telephoto lens can help frame an aircraft that is far from the viewing area; Canon recommends telephoto lenses for moving subjects at a distance. There is no single focal length that suits every airport: the useful reach depends on the sightline, aircraft size, distance, and camera system. If you are considering a telephoto zoom, make sure it is compatible with your camera’s lens mount. Canon’s moving-subject guidance

- EF Mount; Aperture Range: f/4-45; DC Autofocus Motor; 4.9' Minimum Focus Distance; 58mm Filter Thread Diameter
- 4.9-foot closest focusing distance; 32- to 8-degree diagonal angle of view
- Measures 2.8 inches in diameter and 4.8 inches long; weighs 16.8 ounces
- Improved mechanism makes zooming smoother; front part of zoom ring sports silver ring.
Use continuous autofocus and drive
Select continuous autofocus—often called AF-C or AI Servo—and continuous drive if your camera offers them. Start tracking before the plane reaches the part of the departure path you want to photograph, keep it beneath the active focus area, and use short bursts through acceleration and rotation. Camera labels and behavior vary by model. Canon describes continuous shooting with autofocus for moving subjects, while Nikon recommends autofocus and continuous shooting for most aviation photographs. Prioritize shutter speed for a crisp jet
A fast shutter is a sensible starting point when you want the aircraft frozen sharply. Nikon’s motion-photography guidance gives 1/500 second as a starting point for fairly fast action, and its aviation examples use speeds above 1/500 second. These are starting examples, not guaranteed settings for every takeoff, camera, distance, or light level. Nikon motion-photography guidance; Nikon aviation-photography guide

If you know how to set exposure, shutter-priority mode lets you choose a fast shutter while the camera selects an aperture. Raise ISO if needed to maintain that shutter speed, then review a frame for exposure and focus. In bright conditions, aperture priority can also work if it keeps the shutter fast enough. If manual adjustments are unfamiliar, Canon suggests using Sports mode for moving subjects. Canon camera guidance

After your first burst, check whether the aircraft is sharp and correctly exposed. A bright sky can influence the camera’s exposure and leave the plane too dark; adjust exposure or framing to suit the light. There is no single exposure-compensation value that fits every scene.

- Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
- Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
- Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
- Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
- Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.
Choose between a frozen aircraft and propeller blur
For a jet, a faster shutter helps freeze the aircraft. For a propeller plane, a slower shutter can show the blades turning, but it also makes blur in the airframe more likely. Photographer Moose Peterson’s approach, quoted in Nikon’s airshow guide, is: “For propeller planes, I like to use shutter priority with a speed of 1/25 second to 1/125 second so the props blur and the aircraft look like they’re really flying, not hanging from a string.” Treat that range as his creative starting point, not a required setting; expect fewer frames to be fully sharp. Pan smoothly with the plane through the viewfinder and continue the movement as you take the shot. Nikon recommends smooth panning and following through during a burst. Make one tight frame that emphasizes the aircraft, then try a wider composition with space in the direction it is traveling. A wider frame gives context and room around the plane; a tighter telephoto frame makes the aircraft more prominent but leaves less margin for tracking errors. Nikon’s aviation-photography guide
